TV Tonight: Michael and Michael Have Issues

In Comedy Central's Michael and Michael Have Issues, we have another show-within-a-show, a la 30 Rock. This one stars former members of The State (and a bunch of other stuff like Stella and Wet Hot American Summer), Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, as the hosts of their own fictitious sketch show. We'll go "behind-the-scenes" and learn all about the issues that "the two misguided stars wrestle with as they confront their own issues of insecurity and jealousy as each attempts to undermine the other."

TV Tonight: Indecision 2008, Live

Throughout this crazy election season, whenever I've needed a quick pick-me-up or a laugh at the day's wacky events, I've turned first to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. So it's only fitting that the two of them will be a big part of today's election TV coverage, with a live Indecision 2008: America's Choice special airing at 10 p.m. EST, 7 p.m. PST. Oh, and if you happen to be in New York City, you can stop by the MTV jumbotron in Times Square and watch it there, too.

The one-hour special marks the first time Stewart and Colbert will share a desk as co-anchors (though they did work together on Comedy Central's 2006 live special, the Midterm Midtacular). They won't be alone, either; The Daily Show's team of correspondents will also be along for the ride with reports from candidate headquarters (or, perhaps, "candidate headquarters." I guess we'll have to tune in to see).

I credit The Daily Show alone for getting me through the craziness of the 2000 election, and I'm curious to see what they and the Colbert Report folks will cook up this time around. To watch a preview for the special, just read more.

TV Tonight: The Sarah Silverman Program

Sarah Silverman is back and ready to do really gross stuff on your TV in the second season of Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program. Clearly, Silverman is an acquired taste (although I think she expanded her reach a bit with the success of her duet with Matt Damon), and the preview clips for this next season reveal she doesn't really care.

For me, watching Sarah Silverman causes a range of reactions: side-splitting laughter, gasping, a lot of looking away and screaming, "ew!," etc. I should warn that the videos after the jump aren't for the faint of heart as there's a lot of political incorrectness and a focus on things like poo. The first part of the premiere begins tonight and the second half will air tomorrow night at the same time. TV Tonight: Roasting Bob Saget

What do you get when a raunchy, dirty, frequently inappropriate TV event meets one of the raunchiest, dirtiest, most inappropriate comedians of a generation? Awesomeness - and a stomach that aches with pain from too much laughter. And that's why I'm not-so-secretly looking forward to tonight's roast of Bob Saget on Comedy Central.

If you haven't heard yet, Bob Saget is a major dirty perv of a comedian. His shtick can be uncomfortable, but I've seen him do it live, and it's mostly pretty funny. He has the kind of mouth my grandmother would wash out with soap. It's hilariously strange given what a clean-cut father figure he was to those of us who grew up watching him as Danny Tanner on Full House, the role that made him a household name.

Anyone on Full House is a pretty easy target for a roast like this because the show was so wholesome. However, news spread this week that some off-color jokes about the Olsen twins may have crossed the line (Saget himself said those jokes went a little too far). But that tiny controversy aside (and, really, what roast worth watching doesn't stir up controversy?) the whole thing looks pretty hysterical.

Tonight's show will also be a bit of a twofer as "roast master" John Stamos does not escape ridicule either, as you can see in some of the preview clips I've gathered. The roast airs tonight at 10 p.m. EDT and PDT. Would You Watch an Updated Gong Show?

There's news from Comedy Central this morning that the network plans to revive the '70s hit The Gong Show. The original, hosted by TV personality (and possible CIA hitman) Chuck Baris, featured amateur performers showing off their talents - singing, dancing, fire-eating, juggling - for a panel of celebrity judges. Good acts got to complete their performances, but the bad ones got the gong.

The new version will be hosted by comedian Dave Attell and produced by Adam Sandler's production company. But the idea behind the show is the same: Eight to 10 performers will try to impress a rotating panel of celebrity judges, with Attell promising: "Stars will be made. Feelings will be hurt."

The Gong Show - like, say, Match Game - seems like such a peculiar specimen of '70s culture that I wonder if a modern take would work. Aren't reality shows like American Idol and America's Got Talent basically one big Gong Show already?

The show is set to premiere July 17. Do you think you'll tune in?

Jon Stewart Returns As Host Of The 2008 Oscars

It was just announced that Jon Stewart will return as host of the 2008 Academy Awards. The show airs Feb 24 and will be produced by Gil Cates, who also produced Jon's first time back in 2006 and must have taken a liking to "The Daily Show" anchor.

The only slightly odd part was that Jon's 2006 ratings were lower than both Chris Rock the year before and Ellen last year. Also, the reviews of Jon's first hosting gig were mixed at best.

I've always been a huge fan of Jon and his sense of humor, but it was definitely a toned down version of him on stage in 2006. I thought Ellen did an excellent job last year, but I can't wait to see Stewart's second crack at the gig. What do you think - good choice, should they have stuck with Ellen or found someone new entirely? (You know, Seacrest is always up for a challenge.)

"Daily Show" Correspondent Keeps It Real in Iraq

When "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" correspondent Rob Riggle reports on the Iraq war tonight, the segment will be a little different from Riggle's typical dispatches on "Mess O'Potamia." This time, Riggle will actually be reporting from Iraq.

Riggle, who was a major in the U.S. Marine Corps before becoming one of the "Daily Show"'s funny guys, recently spent five days with troops in Iraq as part of a USO comedy tour. While there, he and a "Daily Show" writer and producer gathered video footage to use on the show this week - the first time the show has reported from Iraq.

War is, obviously, a serious matter, so where's the funny part? Mostly, the reports will be making fun of Riggle and his adventures while overseas. "Of course what's going on is serious, and we take it very seriously," Riggle told the Hollywood Reporter. "Any humor we did, it's on me being an idiot. We know where the line is."

With embedded reporters and interviews with presidential candidates, the fake-news show is starting to look more and more like a real news outlet. I'm curious to see what Riggle has to say about Iraq now that he's seen the war up close.

Colbert, Ben & Jerry to Launch New Ice Cream Tonight!

Tonight, Stephen Colbert will see his AmeriCone Dream come true when Ben & Jerry's co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield appear on The Colbert Report to launch Colbert's ice cream! The AmeriCone Dream consists of vanilla ice cream, fudge-covered waffle cone pieces, and a caramel swirl.

Colbert has high hopes for the impact his dessert will have in freezer politics. According to a Ben & Jerry's press release:

Colbert believes AmeriCone Dream can make a difference. "I’m not afraid to say it. Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda. What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case."

Stephen Colbert is donating his proceeds from the sale of AmeriCone Dream to charity through The Stephen Colbert AmeriCone Dream Fund. The Fund will support charities of concern to Stephen such as food and medical assistance for disadvantaged children, helping veterans and their families, and environmental causes. Said Colbert, "I will save the world."

Well, whether the ice cream is another step toward saving the world or dominating it, my buddy Yum and I can't wait to taste the truthiness. Tune in to Comedy Central tonight at 11:30 p.m. to witness this historic event.

Reno 911!: Miami: Funny, As Usual

If you're already a fan of Comedy Central's "Reno 911!" then the movie Reno 911!: Miami is a dream come true. Basically the film strings together a series of physical jokes and one-liners, but somehow it works and is hilarious.

There are plenty of "Reno 911!"'s signature slow-building and awkward jokes, sight gags galore, and a loose story line that allows for most of "The State" members and other friends of the cast to make cameos. Though the movie attracted people like The Rock and Danny Devito, it is still basically a longer version of the television show, and while it doesn't gain anything from this, it doesn't lose anything either. It is no better or worse than the show, so

In its big-screen debut, directed by Robert Ben Garant (Deputy Travis Junior on the show), the hapless group travels to a police convention in Miami. When the administrators can't find them on the list of registrants, the team is turned away.

The next day, however, they learn that a toxic chemical has been released into the convention center and the place is locked down, making them the only available police officers to hunt down the culprits. The group repeatedly bumbles the mission, of course, only finding success by accident. In their free time, they enjoy the Miami nightlife and stumble through inane sexual misadventures. The movie wraps up in the ways you'd expect from any great episode of the show.

In general, the "Reno 911!" folks are good at not drawing jokes out too-too long, and they do well to have the characters repeatedly admit how not-smart they are. This makes everything much lighter and inoffensive. The disgusting visual humor is mostly pretty low-budget, making it more funny than obnoxious. The much talked-about butt prosthetic that Niecy Nash (who plays Officer Raineesha Williams) sports is worth the price of admission alone. And the one-liners, for fans of the show, are classic. When someone refers to Deputy Clementine Johnson's (Wendi McLendon-Covey) region "down there," she deadpans, "There's nothing down there. Nothing. Like a Barbie." All in all, viewers unfamiliar with the show will probably find the film annoying, but the show's excitable fan base will be very pleased.

Movie Preview: Reno 911!: Miami

Those lovable members of Reno's finest have finally made their way to the big screen, and you can catch them there this Friday, Feb. 23, in Reno 911!: Miami. The team of highly trained professional cops leave their Nevada home for sunny Miami, where a terrorist attack has disrupted a police convention. Even better: It's Spring Break. Suddenly Lt. Jim Dangle's super-short shorts look weirdly appropriate.

As a recovering "State" fan, I love these crazy kooks, so you can bet your fake badge I'll be posting my review on Friday. Until then, check out the trailer if you read more
