Kick-Ass: Ultra Violent, Ultra Fun

By now you may have heard that Kick-Ass isn't your average comic book-based movie. Instead of your friendly neighborhood heroes who only want to help the innocent, you have a cast of superpower-free renegades who shouldn't be anyone's hero - yet each and every player in Kick-Ass manages to win you over, one filthy word at a time.

Relative unknown Aaron Johnson stars as nerdy, awkward Dave Lizewski (AKA Kick-Ass), a guy who wonders why no regular person has ever tried to be a superhero. Determined to be the first, he puts on a cheap scuba suit and tries his hand at combating crime. Soon, he finds out that he's not the only masked avenger in town when the true badasses - Hit Girl and Big Daddy - come out to play. Played by Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz, the father-and-daughter pair are the real fighters who are after crime boss Frank D'Amico.

What follows is a violent, action-filled thrill ride that has you cheering, cringing, and ultimately, wanting more. To hear why, just

I issue my recommendation for this movie with a hearty warning: there's a lot of language that may be offensive and many graphic, gruesome scenes. Where predecessors like Spider-man engage in clean, fast, almost hygienic violence, Kick-Ass uses heavy doses of blood and creative modes of killing. But as someone who has a weak stomach for this kind of thing, I say it's worth it.

The movie is so much fun and so terribly funny, while still pulling off complete originality. Director Matthew Vaughn has a clear, consistent vision, which includes a vibrant aesthetic. But if I'm assigning kudos, in truth, it all goes to the cast. I can't say enough about Moretz, who has no problem going from giggling schoolgirl to terrifying assassin - all with the dirtiest mouth in the movie. Her performance is stunning, standout, and passionate. It's also nothing less than a triumphant turn for Nicolas Cage, who put a smile on my face each time he uttered his lines. I can't forget about Christopher Mintz-Plasse, though; once only known for his Superbad role, he's left McLovin' behind and impresses as the eager but conflicted Red Mist.

It may not be appropriate for all audiences, but for those who are looking for an edgy and exhilarating experience at the movies, Kick-Ass is not to be missed.

Hot Tub Time Machine: Offensively Funny

It's OK to be skeptical of the whole hot-tub-as-time-machine thing that is the plot of, ahem, Hot Tub Time Machine. The movie is aware of its own ridiculousness and quickly shepherds you past that little detail so you can let yourself go and thoroughly enjoy it. Being able to appreciate the absurdity of a sci-fi jacuzzi is the first thing you'll need to love this movie; the other thing? A highly dirty sense of humor.

John Cusack, Craig Robinson, and Rob Corddry star as three buddies who try to relive their glory days at the ski lodge they once ruled in the '80s. Clark Duke plays the nephew of Cusack's character, his youth serving to remind the three men of their age and dissatisfaction with their grown-up lives. The perfect storm of debauchery, alcohol, and a shorted hot tub control panel leads them to time travel to their former selves in 1986. Like I said, you can't get hung up on the details of the plot, which include Chevy Chase as a spiritual time travel adviser of sorts, but you can get into the details of the '80s settings. Of course, you've got your tacky fluorescent '80s fashion and killer soundtrack, but the movie cleverly integrates common '80s movie conventions, like a ski patrol villain named Blaine (played by Sebastian Stan). In fact, the crazy plot twists (and abundance of bare breasts) sometimes make it feel like an actual movie from the Me Decade.

There are plenty of times that the movie goes too far, but it moves so quickly past each gag that you don't have time to squirm in some of the grosser scenes. What really makes it work, though, is the likability of the four guys. Corddry's Lou is so foul-mouthed a trucker would wince, but he's easily the most entertaining cast member. Cusack's presence is ironic, since he's the ultimate '80s heartthrob, but he's definitely still got it, while it's fantastic to see Duke and Robinson thriving outside of their small-screen shows (Greek and The Office, respectively).

Even if you don't love Hot Tub Time Machine, you have to respect the way everyone involved with the film - from the cast and crew, down to the props people - really went for it. To be sure, this isn't a movie for everyone, but for the many it is aimed at, it's a wild ride.

Movie Preview: Hot Tub Time Machine

Right on the heels of the sweet geekfest that is Comic-Con, we get a little preview for a movie that deals with the space-time continuum. Kinda. (Well, it also references Stargate fan fiction, so there's an uber-geeky tie-in.) In Hot Tub Time Machine, we follow four guys (played by Craig Robinson, John Cusack, Rob Corddry, and Greek's Clark Duke) who get drunk and travel back in time (via hot tub, naturally). This red-band (read: NSFW) preview doesn't show a great deal of the movie but it makes me giggle because a) these four guys together make a silly bunch, and b) I find it funny to hear John Cusack say the F-word. I don't know why.

Cusack and Co. Climb Into the Hot Tub Time Machine

First of all, it's called Hot Tub Time Machine. And that's exactly what we can expect to see in this movie: A hot tub that has the power to bring people back in time. The story will follow "a group of guys who have grown frustrated with their adult lives. They return to the ski lodge where they partied as teens to find answers and are transported to 1987 via their hot tub, a bubbly time machine."

Back when this project was first announced (and Popwatch deemed it the stupidest movie title ever), I figured the cast would be largely taken from the Apatow pool - and though Craig Robinson is one of the men in the hot tub, the other two will be played by John Cusack and Rob Corddry, with Greek's Clark Duke playing Cusack's younger brother.

I truly hope this movie is great and funny because I really like all these dudes. All I know is I'm relieved that this hot tub will have nothing to do with Brody Jenner and the young men with whom he is bromantically involved.

Movie Preview: Sex Drive

I heard about Sex Drive a while ago and then read a review that gave the movie a so-so rating, but now that I've seen the trailer, I'm kinda interested to see it. In some ways it resembles a way weaker version of Superbad, but also more bizarre and - it seems - a little less gross. The plot goes like this: "A horny teenager brings his friends along on a road trip from Chicago to Knoxville to lose his virginity with a girl he met online."

The cast makes me like this movie more than I might otherwise. I don't usually laugh at Seth Green, but I actually did in this case. Also, it stars one of my favorite actors from Greek: Clark Duke (who plays Rusty's conservative Southern roommate Dale on the show), pictured above in the bathrobe. And finally: James Marsden is in it. He's even cute when playing a pretty abhorrent character. Now that's talent.

Check Out Michael Cera's New Web Comedy

By now you know I love Michael Cera, aka George Michael Bluth from "Arrested Development." In addition to starring in this summer's Superbad, the 18-year-old has teamed up with his friend Clark Duke for Clark and Michael, an online-only Web comedy for CBS.

The first short episode went online this week, and it's pretty good - very dry humor in the style of "Arrested Development" or some of the wackier Comedy Central shows of recent years. The show is styled as a documentary about two young Hollywood wannabes trying to sell their first script, acting savvy but really having no clue what they're doing. Clark and Michael have roped some older, wiser comedic actors into the project, as well: The first episode has cameos by Tony "Buster Bluth" Hale and Comedy Central regular Eric Wareheim.

New episodes will go up every Wednesday until, as Clark and Michael wrote on their MySpace page, they run out of episodes. Fair enough. If you check it out, let me know what you think. William and Kate Get Mike and Zara's Wedding Party Started on a Boat!

Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, boarded the royal yacht Britannia, which was docked in Edinburgh, this afternoon in order to celebrate his first cousin Zara Phillips's wedding with a cocktail party! Kate recycled the green Diane von Furstenberg dress she wore during her visit to LA earlier this month. Prince Harry was also in attendance, and he was spotted ascending the same carpeted stairs that the bride and her husband-to-be, Mike Tindall, walked up. Zara was decked out in a dress from Alice and Olivia. Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie also colorfully turned out, along with the elder's boyfriend, Dave Clark. Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall will marry tomorrow at the city's Canongate Kirk, and her royal relatives will be out in full force. Kate and William often go by their titles of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but their Scottish equivalents are the Earl and Countess of Strathearn. Scotland is a special place for the couple, as it's where they met and fell in love while students at the University of St. Andrews. Wales, though, has been their home as of late, as it's where William works with the Royal Air Force when not traveling with Kate for family obligations.
