All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

Just in time for scary movie season, Stephen King's summer sleeper hit 1408 is coming out on DVD! The movie quietly opened over the summer and then surprisingly became the No. 2 movie at the box office in June, coming in ahead of the Fantastic Four sequel and just behind Evan Almighty.

John Cusack plays Mike Enslin, a writer of horror fiction whose young daughter dies. He scoffs at the idea of paranormal activity and goes around discrediting allegations of ghosts and hauntings. However, when his work leads him to a haunted hotel room (number 1408) where "nobody lasts more than an hour," Mike starts to experience things he never knew were possible. Samuel L. Jackson plays the hotel manager. You can watch the preview for 1408 here.

Two more new titles so

The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
This sequel to the first Fantastic Four movie finds the superheroes battling the Silver Surfer, a liquidy metallic guy who can change matter and who apparently "eats planets." Apparently, "Everywhere this thing goes, eight days later, the planet dies." The trailer includes a lot of flashy computer animation and Jessica Alba using her superpowers in her wedding dress. Special features include extended and deleted scenes and some behind-the-scenes featurettes, including one about the comic book origins of the Silver Surfer.

Civic Duty
Civic Duty, which stars Peter Krause as a man who becomes convinced that his neighbor is a terrorist, is far from the most subtle movie I've ever seen. But the paranoia-fueled thriller is still an interesting look at race, prejudice and presumption in post-Sept. 11 society. When I interviewed Krause last year, he told me he pushed to get the movie made because he felt the artistic community hadn't weighed in enough on the effects of terrorist attacks on the average American's state of mind. That's an ambitious goal for a small movie, but it's definitely good for sparking a discussion.

Interview: Peter Krause of Civic Duty and "Six Feet Under"

From Casey McCall on "Sports Night" to Nate Fisher on "Six Feet Under," Peter Krause tends to play the everyman. In his new film, Civic Duty, Krause turns that everyman identity on its head as Terry Allen, who starts out as an Average Joe in a media-saturated world and eventually turns into a paranoid vigilante after becoming convinced that his young Muslim neighbor is a terrorist. The film - which is both a tense thriller and a political statement about prejudice and paranoia - opens in limited release today.

I recently sat down with Krause to talk about the film - which he also produced - and its message, life outside of Hollywood, and why he almost said no to his new TV pilot. In person, Krause is fiercely intelligent, quietly thoughtful, and refreshingly unafraid to express his political opinions. Here's how our conversation went:

I didn't realize you lived in the Bay Area. What's it like being away from the LA crush?

I should have done it long ago. I really love what I do. I love being on a sound stage. I even love the city of Los Angeles. But in terms of a home, I'm much more comfortable in a rural setting. I know I'm sitting here in a suit right now, but I'm usually wearing a pair of bib overalls and a hat to keep the sun off my face.

So, about Civic Duty. Almost six years past 9/11, do you think there are still people like Terry? Or do you think we've turned off the media more and become desensitized?

I think that it's exhausting, obviously, to stay in a heightened state of panic. I'm not sure that it's anything except a function of nature, that it's the way we are as animals that we can only remain that vigilant for so long before we start to go crazy or batty. I think we also have a built-in mechanism - nobody wants to live in that world. Nobody wants to live in paranoia, they really don't. I do think that there are fewer people out there who are this afraid. I don't know if it's becoming desensitized or if it's just because of a lack of terrorist activity that that sense of paranoia is diminished.

I read that when you became involved in the project you changed Terry a little bit.

I did, along with [director] Jeff Renfroe and the blessing of the writer, Andrew Joiner. He understood what I was trying to do by bringing Terry to the middle and making him a member of the silent majority rather than being conservative. We weren't going to alienate anyone by having conservative people feel like they were being made fun of or let liberal people off the hook, let them lean back and say, "Oh, this crazy conservative." Because the truth is, we were all very paranoid for good reason after September 11.

What drew you to the project?

I didn't feel at the time - we made this almost two years ago - that there had been enough response from the artistic community about what was happening now in our world. Also, there was no real response from the artistic community about what was happening to the mental landscape of your average American. It was an incredibly frightening time immediately following September 11. The media kept reflecting our fears, saying there could be thousands of these terrorist cells, there could be thousands of these terrorists here in the country. I think that our worst fears were being reflected back to us - orange alerts and red alerts. The flames of fear were definitely being fanned by the media, by the government, and we became a paranoid nation.

You play really interesting, complex characters. When parts come your way, are there things you look for?

I don't like to be bored, so that's part of it. When I read something and I'm not into the story, or the character's not - there's not something there that I'm like "What? What's going on here?" - then I don't tend to gravitate toward it. There was a miniseries I just did for the Sci Fi Channel called "The Lost Room," which was really a refreshing change for me. I got to play a classic hero who knew right from wrong and was very uncomplicated. His daughter gets lost in another dimension, and he's got to get her back. It was that simple, and I understood when I did that how I could get sucked into playing those sorts of roles, because it's psychologically very easy. It's healthy. It feels good to know right from wrong and to get the job done. It's so unlike life.

I haven't said that before, but it's very true. It's true about the movies. The movies that do really well are the movies that are so unlike life, where characters know right from wrong and they get the job done. That definitely is a part of life - we want our heroic ideals, and we want to strive for them. But real life is a lot more messy and complicated. Civic Duty is in the spirit of that attitude. It's not a simple look at the world, and it's definitely an extreme look at the possible output of paranoia and the possible output of a government that hasn't taken very good care of its people.

Is Civic Duty the first truly political thing that you've done?

Mm-hmm

Were you nervous about doing that at all?

I guess at the time I was, and now I feel less nervous about it. The film is really a jumping-off place for conversation, for talk, for communication. There are things that I think the majority don't know. I don't think the majority know that they don't get to vote on foreign policy, that they get to vote on elected officials who then get to represent them to other countries without much of their say. If we want to be a different country we have to step forward and be a different country.

I wanted to ask about your new TV pilot ["Dirty Sexy Money," which is being developed for ABC]. I thought it was funny, as a "Six Feet Under" fan, that you were once again playing a guy who took over his dad's business.

Yeah, that was one reason I almost didn't do it. But Craig Wright, who wrote it, was a writer on "Six Feet Under," and he had a long talk with me about what "Dirty Sexy Money" is and what "Six Feet Under" was and what similarities they share and how they're different. If it goes, it will be a very different show. It will have a lot more comedy than "Six Feet Under," but it will also examine some of the more wobbly things in the world - greed, division between rich and poor, that sort of thing. But a laugh a minute!

Movie Preview: Civic Duty

It's been more than five years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but Terry Allen, the man at the center of the new film Civic Duty, remains afraid that someone could be plotting another attack on the United States. He's a normal guy with a white-collar job living in a media-saturated world, where CNN is a constant backdrop and everyone knows whether the terror alert is at yellow or orange.

But then Terry (Peter Krause) gets fired, and with lots of time on his hands, he starts keeping an eye on his new neighbor, a Muslim student named Hasan. He sees Hasan going through the trash early in the morning, follows him around town, and even calls the FBI to file a report. But when the FBI doesn't appear to be taking his concerns seriously, Terry decides it's time to take matters into his own hands. It's not the most subtle movie I've ever seen, but it does raise a lot of questions about stereotypes, prejudice and trust.

Prince Harry Looks Hot in a Tan Suit For His Latest Stop in the Bahamas

Prince Harry continued his tour of the Bahamas at a youth rally held inside Nassau's National Stadium this afternoon. The Prince is traveling on behalf of his grandmother the queen as she gears up to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee this year. Harry made a first appearance in Nassau yesterday, when he visited with children and spoke in Rawson Square.

He was back among kids for his latest outing, which included more time in front of the microphone. Harry, after recovering speech papers blown away by a troublesome gust of wind, addressed the crowd saying, "I know Her Majesty would wish me to extend her personal encouragement to you all in your endeavors, whether they be in education, civic and community activities, or in the sporting arena." Harry's travels haven't been all about royal duties, though. Harry partied and danced during a stay in Belize last week, and there might be more time for fun as he continues on to Jamaica and Brazil in the coming days.

The Burden of the Working Mom: Fact or Fiction?

If you've been part of an office environment while pregnant or as a parent, chances are, you've faced challenges (and some judgments, too) that are nonissues to your co-workers. In a recent article for Forbes.com, Victoria Pynchon states her case for the working mom, admitting frustration when her "mom employees" would have conflicting obligations but also noting that she now realizes that it wasn't necessarily their fault. She writes:

As I look back on the problem for both me and the working mother, I realize that my law firm simply failed to take into account the existence of working mothers on my team when planning my staffing needs. This was not rocket science. There was plenty of work for women to do at home if they had to relieve a babysitter or pick up a child at 6 p.m. If I needed a live, warm body in the office, better management on my part and better support from HR could easily have solved the problem.

According to a set of statistics presented by Dina Bakst, cofounder and copresident of A Better Balance: the Work & Family Legal Center, absences because of illness, injury, or medical problems are often two to three times as high as absences because of "child care problems, other family or personal obligations, civic or military duty, and maternity or paternity leave."

Sarah Jessica Parker Celebrates the End of the School Year With James!

Sarah Jessica Parker and her son, James Broderick, adorably skipped their way to school in NYC this morning. It was apparently James's last day of class, and SJP commemorated the occasion by snapping a pic of her son on her iPhone. SJP has been all about her city strolls lately, whether she's taking James to class or taking in the sights with her twins Marion and Tabitha Broderick. She's a pro at dressing for the outdoors in her casual, urban style, but SJP also takes it up a notch for nights out on the town. She got decked out last week to toast her pal L'Wren Scott at a handbag launch, and later joined Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher for the first annual Urban Zen Stephan Weiss Apple Awards. SJP's husband, Matthew Broderick, had to miss the latter bash since he was off in LA toasting Morgan Freeman at the legendary actor's AFI tribute. Despite the social obligations, SJP still had to do her civic duty - Sarah Jessica Parker was on jury duty Monday, and reported to the courthouse to find that she wouldn't have to witness a trial after all.

OK, I'm not advocating shirking your civic duty, but a new trend in jury selection seems to be emerging - using Facebook to screen potential jurors (and you thought that only potential employers did that). Apparently, both prosecution and defense lawyers are using Facebook to screen potential jurors before trials.

Lawyers aren't just looking through photos and status updates, either. Likes and interests, favorite TV shows, and weekend activities are all fair game for some who are concerned about selecting the best possible jury for their clients. Find out more after the break.
