Spinal Tap Returning to the Studio for More Funny Stuff

Before Flight of the Conchords and The Lonely Island were recording hilarious parody songs, there was Spinal Tap. The spoof metal band headed up the 1984 This is Spinal Tap mockumentary and vaulted into the spotlight with a couple of classic albums, including songs like "Stonehenge" and "Gimme Some Money."

And now, Spinal Tap is back! Close to the 25th anniversary of the movie, Harry Shearer told the BBC that the band - which includes him, Christopher Guest, and Michael McKean - will be heading back into the studio to record some new material. They'll record a version of the song they performed at Live Earth (the awesomely titled "Warm as Hell") plus some new material. Shearer suggested there's a "Gimme Some More Money" in the works, though it's obviously hard to tell if that's a joke. They're also planning a Summer acoustic tour called "Unwigged, Unplugged, and Undead." Seriously, I don't think I could love them more.

Recently, the actors - or rather, their heavy metal alter egos - sat down with Vanity Fair to talk about the highs and lows of the past 25 years. It's a pretty great read, in which they peg the age of their average fan as somewhere between 50 and 70 and say they haven't had to worry about becoming irrelevant because they were never relevant in the first place. According to Variety, Josh Hartnett will be starring in a London stage production of the movie Rain Man, taking on the role originally played by Tom Cruise.
Rapper Young Jeezy will join the cast of Ice Cube's comedy Janky Promoters, Billboard writes.
Michael Imperioli will join the cast of ABC's Life on Mars, Variety reports.
Four more actors have joined the cast of the Night at the Museum sequel, including Christopher Guest, ComingSoon reports.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Criminal Minds looks like the next CBS show to get a spinoff.
Billboard writes that at a private concert this week, Pearl Jam helped raise $3 million for the poverty-fighting charity the Robin Hood Foundation.
TNT will remake the British series Cracker, about an abrasive and heavy-drinking detective, with Robert Duvall as an executive producer, Zap2it reports.
A lost interview with the Beatles has been aired on BBC radio, the Associated Press reports.

Ricky Gervais' This Side of the Truth Is Going to Be So Awesome

First off:
This Side of the Truth, written and directed by Ricky Gervais, looks like it's going to be awesome. The story is set in a world where no one has ever lied, and, according to Gervais, he plays "a loser who discovers one day that he, and only he has the ability to lie. In a world where no one even understands the concept of lying, everyone totally believes, without question anything I tell them. I can say anything at all and they accept this as the gospel truth. I can get anything I want. Or can I?"

Secondly:
Gervais is awesomely blogging his experience of working on this movie, from his collaboration with co-writer and director Matt Robinson ("During the [conference] call me and Matt passed each other off-putting notes and obscene pictures to make each other laugh. I lost, and at one point had to leave the room") to observations about picking out costumes as an actor ("Some directors/lead actors would choose their wardrobe based on style, creation of original iconography and aesthetic enhancement of the fictional world. I chose mine based on comfort, how long they take to get in and out of and on what I would want to keep when the movie is complete.")

Thirdly:
Look at all the ridiculously cool people in this movie. Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Rob Lowe and Louis C.K. are confirmed, while Gervais has stated on his blog that Tina Fey, Christopher Guest (Christopher Guest!), Jeffrey Tambor and John Hodgman have also been cast.

This is going to be awesome.

Christopher Guest, Mitchell Hurwitz Teaming Up for Pilot

Here's something to snap you out of that post-Oscars funk: "Arrested Development" creator Mitchell Hurwitz and Waiting for Guffman writer/director Christopher Guest are teaming up to make a comedy pilot for ABC.

According to Zap2it, Guest will be directing Hurwitz's adaptation of a British show called "The Thick of It," which - no surprises here - is filmed like a mockumentary.

My inner "Arrested Development" fan is already mourning the show's demise, but I'm going to try to be optimistic for a little while. After all, that other faux-British-documentary-turned-American-sitcom seems to be doing alright for itself, and Guest and Hurwitz rarely disappoint. What do you all think?
