Extra! Extra! Get Your New Coldplay Here!

We're still nearly two months away from when Coldplay's fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, drops (June 17 in the United States), but today, the band is throwing fans a bone by releasing a song from the album to download for one week only. The song is called "Violet Hill" and is the eighth track on the album that is supposedly taking the band in a new creative direction.

In addition to the early download today, the band will also play two free shows in support of the new album, one in London and one at Madison Square Garden in New York City. A few details about the London show are on the band's site now.

To grab your own copy of the song, go here and fill out a short form that asks for your Zip code and e-mail address. The site will then e-mail you directions for downloading the song. A lot of people must be doing this, so beware that it could take a while for you to get the e-mail - mine took more than three hours!

The song definitely hints at a new, somewhat harder sound for Coldplay, but it also doesn't feel that out of step with the material they've released before. Now I'm curious to see if the full album will live up to the hype - not to mention the commercial success they've experienced thus far.

Music Video: Kanye Feat. Chris Martin, "Homecoming"

Chris Martin of Coldplay fame is a popular guy in the land of hip-hop. He popped up on a track from Jay-Z's 2006 comeback album Kingdom Come, and he teamed up with Kanye West for "Homecoming" on Kanye's most recent album, Graduation.

The new black-and-white video for "Homecoming," which features Kanye and Chris Martin (as mostly an outline of himself), is a refreshing change of pace from some recent videos that seem like frantic strobe-lit messes of neon colors. It may make some people yawn, but I find it to be a welcome change.

Plus there are random shots of Common throughout, and Common's really easy on the eyes.

Kanye West and Chris Martin Collaboration Coming Soon

I was excited after merely hearing rumors about a Kanye West and Chris Martin collaboration, so now that the news has been confirmed, I have very high hopes for this interesting (and handsome) partnership. According to NME, West and Coldplay's Martin are teaming up on a track called "Graduation," which will appear on West's third album, due out in September.

Also called Graduation, the new album is West's first since 2005's groundbreaking Late Registration. Martin already honed his hip-hop chops on "Beach Chair," a track off Jay-Z's Kingdom Come, and Kanye, of course, is no stranger to collaborations, remixes, and other musical dabbling. Let's just hope his song with Martin is better than his somewhat unnecessary remix of T-Pain's "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')" - though I think it's hilarious that he references "Run's House." Rewind: This Week's Buzz

We got a double whammy of Matt Damon movie previews: Invictus and Green Zone, and the busy guy is in talks for the next Coen brothers movie.
What shows have been canceled, picked up for full seasons, or renewed? I racked up the results on my Fall TV scorecard and a late-week update.
I chit-chatted with some of my favorite TV stars this week; read my interviews with FlashForward's Sonya Walger and Parks and Recreation's Chris Pratt and Rashida Jones.
Many lovely ladies made movie casting news this week, including Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Biel, Diane Kruger and January Jones.
Michael Jackson's tribute doc This Is It premiered Wednesday, so I caught a show and gave it my review - and stamp of approval.
Good news for Hollywood's funnymen: Ricky Gervais is set to host the Golden Globes, while Steve Carell scored a role in a gold comedy, and Adam Sandler is going to play both Jack and Jill in his next movie.
The Office characters one-upped their own show with the webisode music video for "Male Prima Donna" by Subtle Sexuality.
The Martin Scorcese biopic is full steam ahead, with Leo as the top choice for both you guys and Martin Scorsese.

Good Hair: A Funny, Informative Doc For Everyone

Chris Rock's first shot at a documentary was spurred on by a simple question his daughter asked: "Daddy, why don't I have good hair?" Good Hair is Rock's quest to find out what that is, and why we - men and women, black and white - care so much.

It's not a race relations angle as much as the trailer makes it seem, but rather an investigation into the phenomenon his two young daughters are growing up into: that straight European hair is what's desirable, beautiful, and worth lots of money and pain to get.

As a documentarian, Rock excels at putting his subjects at ease, and his experts run the gamut. There are African-American women (particularly actresses like Nia Long and Eve), who can report their feelings firsthand about their hair and the extra pressure from Hollywood they endure to conform. Ice T is hilarious whether he's talking about silicone or wearing curlers in his hair for mugshots. Rock even gets Maya Angelou and Al Sharpton to deliver some of the documentary's biggest laughs. Yes, that's the kind of doc this is - one in which a political figure can make the momentous occasion of lobbying for Martin Luther King Jr. Day into a knee-slapping anecdote.

Watching a doc with as many one-liners as a Judd Apatow flick, I left wondering why more comedians don't make documentaries. Then again, Rock shows that he's green as a nonfiction filmmaker when he initiates conversations only to abruptly drop them. There is a lot to be said for black women striving for straight hair in a cultural context, and Rock raises this issue, but doesn't make a strong point about it. Particularly frustrating is Rock's discovery that most of the human hair sold as weaves in the US comes from India; specifically, from worshipers in India who sacrifice their hair to God in a ritual called Tonsure. Rock shows the Tonsure ceremony and the hair removal, but stops short of questioning what I think is a gross offense.

That's not to say Rock doesn't have some major revelations; he exposes the harms of sodium hydrochloride, also known as chemical relaxer (street name: "creamy crack"). His tenaciousness at that issue makes me wish he'd delved further into the other important matters of the movie.

On the whole, though, this is a solid effort for a first documentary, and it's surprisingly weighty subject matter. When you might think that he's gone a bit too far from his own point of reference, he brings it back to why he's looking at "good hair" in the first place -for his daughters. From salons in Beverly Hills to barber shops in Compton, Rock makes you laugh while opening your eyes to a hairy social subject.
