Jake Gyllenhaal Gets to Know His Fellow Berlin International Film Festival Jurors

Jake Gyllenhaal and his fellow members of the jury at the Berlin International Film Festival gathered this morning for a photocall. Before entering the Grand Hyatt, Jake stopped to sign autographs and pose for a few photos. He then linked up with Charlotte Gainsbourg, British director Mike Leigh, and Dutch director Anton Corbijn. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, German actress Barbara Sukowa, French director François Ozon, and Algerian writer Boualem Sansal round out the group of jurors. Jake and company will decide which of the eighteen films in competition takes home the prestigious Golden Bear Award for best picture. Diane Kruger's Farewell, My Queen is among those in contention, as is Angelina Jolie's In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Director Lars von Trier is known for his unusual and visceral aesthetic, like in 2009's Antichrist, and his upcoming film, Melancholia, looks to offer more of the same. Kirsten Dunst stars as Justine, a woman who's already questioning her happiness on her wedding day to her handsome new husband (Alexander Skarsgard). She's also clashing with her sister Claire, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, while Kiefer Sutherland makes a rare film appearance as Claire's prickly husband. The relationships would be enough for a rich psychological drama, but there's actually an, um, disaster angle.

Another planet has just emerged from behind the Sun and is on an apparent collision course with Earth, making the principal characters understandably anxious. It's a strange combination of genres (think Margot at the Wedding meets Armageddon), but there's no denying that the bit we get to see in the preview is stunningly photographed. Miranda Kerr browsed around the city with Orlando Bloom last night, and he was by her side again this morning as they headed to the presentation along with Salma Hayek, fresh off playing host to Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez, and her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, whose company, PPR, owns the brand. It was the only Fashion Week appearance for the two supermodels, though Gisele took a turn on the runway for Colcci over the Summer. French Beauty Is Easy - Kind Of

Singer/actress/face of Balenciaga Charlotte Gainsbourg has the kind of style that seems to be encoded in French DNA. At yesterday's Balenciaga presentation in Paris, she showed off her typically understated brand of beauty: minimal makeup and the tousled, fringe-in-face haircut her mother Jane Birkin made famous. This look is especially appealing for those of us who don't want to spend an hour primping each morning. (Ahem, me.)

Of course, this style just looks easy. Charlotte's glossy hair and glowing skin are most likely due to a disciplined beauty regimen. From traveling, I've noticed that skin care is a much larger part of grooming in France than it is here. For many French women, a spa facial isn't a luxury as much as it is a necessary discipline in their skincare routine. And while makeup counters exist in stores like Printemps, the bigger focus is on skin care. I have no idea what Charlotte does to get her beautiful complexion, but seeing it is a reminder that it has been far too long since my pores have been properly purged.

Musical je ne sais quoi: When you have Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck teaming up to write an album, it better be good, and IRM doesn't disappoint. Taken from the French acronym for an MRI, Gainsbourg drew inspiration from her own MRIs following her water-skiing accident (and resulting hemorrhage) in 2007. As such, "Master's Hand" includes the lyrics "Paint my bones/ Drill my brain/ All full of holes" and the title track incorporates robotic, machine noise. Sounds dismal, but the overall affect is often beautiful and mysterious, sweeping strings paired with Gainsbourg's sexy, whispered sing-talking. And of course you have Beck and Gainsbourg's catchy duet "Heaven Can Wait." In a word: IRM is just cool.

Soulful healing: Ever since Corinne Bailey Rae's husband died of an accidental overdose nearly two years ago, the singer has been laying low. Now, she's back in a big way, delivering a rich, layered sophomore album titled The Sea, and surprise - it's actually eerily comforting and uplifting. "Love's on Its Way" conveys some of Rae's despair, but a nice build makes for a pretty, haunting track, and on "The Blackest Lily" she takes on a harder-edged sound. Both are excellent, but my favorite is "Paris Nights/New York Mornings" which feels happy-go-lucky and romantic (and makes me want to dance!) all at the same time.

read more. Childlike wonder: Following their 2008 release Distortion, The Magnetic Fields, led by frontman Stephin Merritt, are taking the opposite approach with the more stripped-down Realism. It's the sort of hipster-approved album you might hear in a Michael Cera movie: quirky, banjo-strumming tunes that at times feel cutesy, e.g. "We Are Having a Hootenanny" which, in addition to having an awesome title, sounds like a kid's singalong at Summer camp. Also worth checking out: the music-box-like ballad "Interlude" and "You Must Be Out of Your Mind," which is simple and upbeat, despite a darker warning of the pains of growing up.

Anne Leads the Celebrity Couture Guests to Paris

The Spring couture shows are currently underway in Paris, which means it's time for star-studded front rows. Anne Hathaway was Giorgio Armani's guest of honor yesterday for his presentation, though she was able to tear herself away from his runway full of red carpet-worthy gowns long enough to exchange loving glances with her boyfriend Adam Shulman. Anne recently found out she's the year's female recipient of Harvard's Hasty Pudding pot, and she's also set to announce the Oscar nominations back in LA on February 2. Elsewhere in Paris, Hilary Swank joined Inglourious Basterds's Melanie Laurent at a collection from Etam designed by the model Natalia Vodianova. This morning brought Karl Lagerfeld's latest collection for Chanel, which went with a "neon baroque" theme. Pregnant Claudia Schiffer was there to join Alexa Chung and the always attention-grabbing Kanye West and Amber Rose.
