Role in Will Ferrell Movie Goes for $47,100

Remember when I told you that Will Ferrell was auctioning off a role in his movie Step Brothers, with the proceeds going to charity? Well, we have a winner!

Clearly, Ferrell was right to appeal to kids' parents, assuring them that it would be "the surefire way to win the parent of the year award." The Dallas father of 10-year-old boy ended up with the winning bid of $47,1000 which secures his son a role as an extra in Ferrell's movie. Bidding started at $5,000.

The money will go to Cancer for College, an organization started by Ferrell's college buddy Craig Pollard who is a two-time Hodgkin's disease survivor. The foundation helps send current and former cancer patients to college.

The highest-bidding man wishes to remain anonymous, but said in a statement issued by the foundation, "Winning this auction means a lot to me on a very personal basis. I lost my mother to ovarian cancer a few years ago, so I feel fortunate that my 10-year-old and I are able to participate in an event involving Cancer for College and Will Ferrell."

Bidding Has Started for Role in Will Ferrell Movie

Will Ferrell is auctioning off a cameo in his next movie and donating the proceeds to a friend's cancer foundation. Two-time Hodgkin's disease survivor Craig Pollard was a fraternity brother of Ferrell's back in the day, and now Ferrell is helping his buddy raise money for Pollard's organization Cancer for College.

The charity helps send current and former cancer patients to college. Since 1993, it has awarded $200,000 to 50 cancer survivors.

Bidding has already begun on the eBay, starting with $5,000, and it will close September 26. As of now, the current bid is up to $16,000. On September 27, Ferrell will announce the winner who will appear in a scene of his comedy Step Brothers.

Ferrell has especially been encouraging parents to bid and win their children the most exciting early Christmas gift ever. "It is the surefire way to win the parent of the year award," Ferrell said. "Support this amazing cause, by buying them me."

I love this guy. What a cool thing to do, using your popularity and star power to both award some crazy fan as well as raise money for a worthy cause that is close to his heart. Hopefully this will inspire other stars to get creative with their fame and continue to do good deeds.

Why HPV Is Suddenly a Man's Problem, and What That Means For Women

HPV is a tricky STD. It's largely been considered a woman's problem, because its most well-known effect is cervical cancer in women. But suddenly, HPV in men is making headlines not only for causing oral cancer but also anal, penile, head, and neck cancer.

Last week I told you not to freak out, because only a few strains cause cancer, but with another headline today - 50 percent of men have HPV - it's hard not to be concerned. The problem is HPV is so complex, it's hard to portray the true risk: its symptoms range from nothing to a wart on a foot to genital warts to deadly cancer. I am staunchly against nonspecific, fear-based sex ed, but I don't want to be unrealistic about an STD that has the potential to do harm.

So why suddenly has HPV become a man's problem? Science did not just discover it causes mouth, throat, anal, and penile cancer - the National Cancer Institute cites a 2002 study for that fact - but suddenly it's everywhere. Why the media blitz?

In December, Merck, the manufacturer of the HPV vaccine Gardasil, got the FDA's blessing to market the vaccine for the prevention of anal cancer. This opened up a huge market of men, particularly gay men (even though you don't have to have anal sex to get anal cancer through HPV). So, yes, there's a pharmaceutical company behind the media push, but that doesn't mean it's not worth taking seriously. Because, even though the FDA agrees with the drug manufacturer, US health officials have not recommended the vaccine for boys and young men. The result? Doctors aren't ordering it for boys and young men, and patients don't know to ask.

When the vaccine came out in 2007, there was some initial fear that it would give young women a false sense of security, but the truth is it helps prevent four troublesome strains. Find out which below.
