What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below you can also add Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail, Everwood: Season Two, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Season Two to your queue.

Friday the 13th
The Friday the 13th remake was a smash hit at the box office when it debuted in theaters a little while back. The duo who brought you the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, Michael Bay and Marcus Nispel, bring the creepy story of Crystal Lake back to the big screen (which you can now play on your small screen).

Here's how Netflix describes the plot: "Ignoring the warnings of the locals, a group of teenage camp counselors takes on the job of reopening Camp Crystal Lake - on Friday the 13th no less, and raise the ire of Jason Voorhees (Derek Mears), a masked, homicidal maniac."

The weather may be nice these days but many people still love watching a scary movie from the comfort of their own home. Plus, the DVD includes special features: deleted scenes and a featurette about exploring "the rebirth of Jason Voorhees for a new moviegoing era."

What Goes Up
This little indie movie looked like it had promise but unfortunately didn't fare too well with the critics. One wrote, "Jonathan Glatzer’s directorial debut What Goes Up is a quirky-small-town dramedy that just barely avoids the 'overly cutesy' and 'self-indulgently melancholy' traps that snare so many indies."

Still, I'm curious to see this movie thanks to its cast that includes Steve Coogan, Molly Shannon, Olivia Thirlby, Josh Peck, and Hilary Duff. The story takes place in the '80s and follows a reporter (Coogan) who is sent to a small town to cover the launch of the Challenger space shuttle and gets to know some troubled high school students in the process.

Burn Notice: Season Two
USA's hit series Burn Notice is back on TV this Summer but for those of you who are a little behind, you can now catch up on the second season.

The second season of this Miami-set spy show follows blacklisted super-spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) "as he takes on all new death-defying assignments in hopes of getting closer to his new employers, the people that were possibly responsible for his ousting." The cast also includes Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Carla and of course Gabrielle Anwar as Michael's ex-girlfriend.

Special features include audio commentaries on select episodes, deleted scenes, a gag reel and a "NIXin' It Up" featurette with series creator Matt Nix on Episode "Do No Harm."

TV Tonight: Burn Notice and Royal Pains on USA

A lot of action is going down on USA tonight, where one of the shows on my Summer TV top 10 makes its season premiere - and a brand new series debuts right after.

The first is Burn Notice, the slick, Miami-set spy show that's become a big hit for USA over the past couple of years. This season finds super-spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) breaking free of the people who burned him, trying to negotiate the world on his own terms again - and, undoubtedly, causing a little trouble along the way.

The second is Royal Pains, about Dr. Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein), a medical superstar who suddenly finds himself making house calls to the rich and famous in the Hamptons. It's the sort of premise that might have worked better when people still, y'know, had money - but hey, we're still watching Real Housewives, so why not give this a shot?

TV Tonight: Burn Notice

Mad Men has the critical buzz, but Burn Notice - another cable show entering its second season - had the viewers last Summer. The USA series brought in 4 million viewers for its premiere and stayed close to that level all season, jumping up to 5 million viewers when DVR-watching was factored in. That's pretty striking for a cable show.

Tonight, Burn Notice is back, with Jeffrey Donovan once again helming things as Michael Westin, a former spy who was "burned" (or fired) and has set out on a mission to find out who ended his spying career - and why. The show's Miami setting is perfect for a sizzling Summer series, and it has Bruce Campbell. What's not to love? Plus, to make things even hotter for season two, the first episode features an appearance by Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer.

Are You Watching "Burn Notice"?

A while back, I told you about "Burn Notice," the new USA show about an exposed spy trying to figure out who let his name be known, starring Jeffrey Donovan and Bruce Campbell. It got a commercial-free premiere after the final episode of "The Starter Wife" and ended up pulling in 4 million viewers, even more than the "Starter Wife" finale.

It's normal for a show to drop some viewers after its premiere, but not "Burn Notice." Last week - a holiday week, no less - "Burn Notice" stayed steady. I haven't been watching the show, but numbers like this, plus some strong reviews, make me think it must have something good going for it. Tell me: Are you watching "Burn Notice"? And, if so, why should I check it out?

Jaime Foxx has been cast in the lead part of a racially charged drama titled Blood on the Leaves, says Hollywood Reporter.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has become Amazon's most pre-ordered book of all time, with 1.6 million copies already ordered worldwide ahead of the book's July 21 release, Reuters reports.
The LA Times looks at the challenges of playing God on screen.
Megan Fox, the "hot girl" in Transformers, will join Kristen Dunst and Simon Pegg in the film adaptation of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, Zap2It reports.
Speaking of Transformers General Motors is hoping the movie - in which, according to the company, the cars "are the heroes" - will boost their auto sales, the AP states.
The final "Drive" episodes will air Friday, July 13 instead of July 4 as originally scheduled, Zap2it reports.
P.J. Harvey is readying a new album for fall release, with songs based more on the piano than the guitar, Billboard reports.
The premiere of "Burn Notice" actually got better ratings than "The Starter Wife" finale, drawing about 4 million viewers, Variety reports.

TV Tonight: "The Starter Wife" and "Burn Notice"

This summer's first fizzy TV pleasure draws to a close tonight, as "The Starter Wife" airs its sixth and final episode. I've been surprised at how much I've enjoyed getting to know Molly, Joan, Rodney and the rest of the Malibu crowd, and I'm curious to see how it all wraps up tonight (hopefully not with Molly in the arms of the judgmental, cheesy, annoying Sam, but we'll see). While not every episode of this series has been a winner, it's had some great one-liners, some funny self-referential Hollywood references, and a ton of great moments from Debra Messing, who's shown charm and range in a role that could have been two-dimensional.

After "The Starter Wife," USA will show the premiere of "Burn Notice," a show about an exposed spy (Jeffrey Donovan) trying to discover who sold him out. It seems a bit odd to pair a spy thriller with "The Starter Wife," but the show looks like it could be funny - and hey, Bruce Campbell's along for the ride as a former military intelligence officer, which should get the series some cult fans, at least.
