Twilight Fans: Do You Care About the Victoria Recast?

The news that Rachelle Lefevre will be replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria in the third Twilight movie, Eclipse, was followed today by a bit of a debate over what happened - and why. Lefevre claims she wanted to continue playing the role and expressed surprise and dismay at being recast. Meanwhile, Summit Entertainment has stated that Lefevre accepted another job that conflicted with the production schedule for Eclipse, so the filmmakers had to find someone else.

It's interesting to know that Lefevre would have gladly continued to play Victoria. Do you wish she could? Or will it probably not matter that someone else will be playing Victoria?

Ron Howard Might Direct From His Daughter's Screenplay

Bryce Dallas Howard wrote a movie and guess who might direct it? That's right, just in time for Father's Day, there's talk of a sweet little father-daughter project, reteaming Bryce Dallas Howard (actress-turned-screenwriter) and her father, director Ron Howard. The dramatic movie is titled The Originals and is described as "an ensemble film about a group of twentysomethings who reconvene for a weekend in New York after learning that the teacher who shaped their childhoods has fallen into a mysterious coma."

Bryce Dallas Howard has been collaborating with her writing partner Dane Charbeneau on the project for three years, after she had the idea of "writing something that tackled the quarter-life crisis issues her contemporaries were dealing with." Coming off the release of his Da Vinci Code sequel, Angels and Demons, Bryce's director dad has yet to officially sign on for his daughter's project, but does see it as "a potential antidote to the huge productions for which he is known."

How cute is this? I like this family and I think it's cool that the father-daughter duo can team up creatively.

Terminator Salvation: Why So Serious?

I remember being awed by James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day when I first saw it in theaters. I was young, but I knew even then that this was the kind of blockbuster that only comes around once in a while. It had heart-stopping action sequences, and parts were genuinely terrifying. I was drawn in by a charismatic, wisecracking teenager named John Connor, who would grow up to become a powerful post-apocalyptic leader of the human race. And the best part was the funny and touching relationship young Connor developed with the Austrian-accented Terminator sent to save him from the future.

Now, here comes director McG, reviving the franchise with Terminator Salvation by taking us into the nightmarish future that previous movies only hinted at. The year is 2018, and Skynet, an evil computer robot dictator, has bombed up the earth. Only a small population of humans has survived. Large and in charge is none other than John Connor, all grown up and looking like Christian Bale. In fact, grown-up Connor sounds just like Bale's other famous Summer movie character, Batman. And like Bale's Batman, his Connor is very serious - because, you know, these are serious times. But this movie would have been a lot more entertaining if both McG and Bale had lightened up a bit. The movie actually opens in 2003, where we meet Marcus Wright (played by newcomer Sam Worthington), who is a murderer on death row. He donates his body to science, and before we know it he's emerging muddy from a pile of futuristic rubbish without a clue as to what's gone down. Wright might be human, he might not be, and that's the question that haunts him throughout the movie. Worthington is a godsend in the role, and he manages to infuse his brutish, indestructible character with some humanity.

Things get interesting when Wright bumps into a young teenager named Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) - who, we know from previous movies, will become John Connor's father. Some time in the future (even beyond 2018), Reese will travel back in time to impregnate Connor's mom, Sarah (Linda Hamilton, whose voice appears in the movie).

The timeline gets even more mind-blowing when Connor realizes that a teenager out there is his dad and Skynet is working on killing him. I kept thinking, "If Skynet kills Reese does Connor go poof right now?" A big disappointment, though, is that Reese isn't, like his son was once upon a time, more of a smartass. There is so much opportunity in this story to give Wright and Reese some fun dialogue, but alas, they don't say much to each other and spend most of the movie running from a wide variety of incredibly loud robots.

Overall, dialogue is the big thing missing from this movie. There are impressive action sequences galore, but no one really talks. And the talking that is there is earnest but somehow empty. McG and his team don't bother digging into - and having fun with - the lore that Cameron created, and it feels like a missed opportunity. Also, while everything is open to interpretation, I would have thought more effort would have been made to preserve the original tone. Edward Furlong established John Connor as a scrappy and unlikely hero with a wicked sense of humor. Christian Bale is humorless, dour, and void of human emotion. In other words, he's robotic - and the movie follows his course. In the end, it's hard to figure out which robot you want to win.

According to ComingSoon, Dawson's Creek's Kerr Smith will join the cast of the 3-D remake of My Bloody Valentine.
Rock legend Bo Diddley died today at the age of 79, writes Billboard.
ABC's Life on Mars adaptation is looking pretty troubled already, according to the LA Times, though it's the network's only new drama for the Fall.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that Bryce Dallas Howard will replace Charlotte Gainsbourg in the fourth Terminator installment.
American Idol winner David Cook's recording deal is official, and he's still setting all kinds of iTunes records, USA Today reports.

Variety reports that Family Guy will compete as a regular comedy at the Emmys - not just an animated one - for the first time.
Katharine McPhee and Wes Bentley are set to star together in the indie psychological drama The Storyteller, reports ComingSoon.

Michelle Williams and Bryce Dallas Howard to Become Bronte Sisters

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite novels, and Wuthering Heights ain't half bad either. But the most fascinating story might be that of the Bronte sisters, Emily (Wuthering Heights), Charlotte (Jane Eyre), and Anne (The Tenant of Wildfell Hall). I've always been curious about what sort of remarkable family could raise three independent women to be writers in the 19th century.

Seems like good fodder for a movie, don't you think? Well, Variety is reporting from Cannes that Michelle Williams, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Evan Rachel Wood are being tapped to star in Bronte, a biopic about the three authors.

The movie will be written and directed by Charles Sturridge, who says he was inspired by his childhood growing up with five sisters in Yorkshire, the same area of England that produced the Bronte sisters. For some reason, that makes me think Sturridge will do the story justice, despite his scant big screen experience. The casting also has a lot of potential, so I think the key will be the director's ability to properly mold these three young actresses. What do you think?

New Spider-Man 3 Clips!

Continuing the barrage of promotion for Spider-Man 3, several new clips from the movie are now available online, thanks to IESB.net. These aren't trailers or bits from previews we've already seen but rather full, never-before-seen scenes, some of which, I have to admit, are pretty damn cool, including:

MJ and Peter's date night on the giant spider web.
Spidey rescuing Gwen (Bryce Dallas Howard, looking super-blond, by the way) from certain death.
Then, a pretty funny jealousy scene in which Gwen and MJ put Peter in an awkward situation.
Topher Grace's character having little chat with God before he Venomizes.
A tense fight amidst the subway cars between Spider-Man and Sandman.

The videos are not embeddable, so you'll have to visit IESB's site, but it's well worth it if your saturation point for Spidey stuff hasn't yet been met.

Bryce Dallas Howard to Replace Lindsay Lohan in Film

Bryce Dallas Howard is in final negotiations to replace Lindsay Lohan in a film written by Tennessee Williams called The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond. Williams' newly discovered screenplay follows Fisher Willow (now Howard), a 1920s Memphis debutante with a tendency to shock and insult those around her. Wait, they took Lohan out of this role?

Anyway, Fisher falls in love with down-on-his-luck Jimmy (Chris Evans) and pretends he is an upper-class suitor to please her aunt (Ann-Margret, who controls the family fortune. When Fisher loses a diamond, however, it only further jeopardizes her fragile relationship with her aunt. For the other details, read more

Teardrop Diamond will begin shooting this spring with an excellent cast that will also include David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck) and Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream). Lohan was originally tapped for the role back in November. Though there is no information about why the actress is being replaced, we could probably venture some guesses. Anybody?
