What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Time to recharge your rental queue with some new DVD releases! On today's docket: a cop thriller, an artsy drama, and a foreign flick with a ton of hype. Let's take a look, shall we?

A Single Man

In designer Tom Ford's directorial debut, Colin Firth stars as a professor grieving after the death of his partner (Matthew Goode); Julianne Moore plays a friend who is in love with him. I found the movie to be a little overdone in terms of acting and visual metaphors, but it is very pretty to look at. See it for Firth's Oscar-nominated performance - or if you can't wait until Mad Men's premiere later this month to see stylish '60s dressing. DVD extras include an audio commentary with Ford.

Brooklyn's Finest

Don Cheadle, Richard Gere, and Ethan Hawke star as three police officers who cross paths at a crime scene after vastly different experiences with corruption in the field. Despite the film's success at Sundance, many critics slammed the storyline for being too cliché. I'm willing to give it a chance, however, due to the strong cast. DVD extras include deleted scenes.

read more. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Ever since buzz of a US version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo began, I've been dying to check out the Swedish film version. Based on Stieg Larsson's novel, the story centers around an older journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, and a computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander, as they try to solve the disappearance of a young girl from decades before. Word is actress Noomi Rapace is stellar in the role of Salander, so I'm especially curious to see her performance. You can hear from Rapace herself on the DVD; she's interviewed as part of the disc's extras. 86%

Box Office: Audiences Follow Alice to Wonderland

Movie-goers shipped off of Shutter Island and headed down the rabbit hole instead this weekend, putting Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland on top with an impressive $116.3 million. Newbie Brooklyn's Finest made a solid debut with $13.5 million, while Shutter Island nipped at its heels with $13.3 million.

Tracy Morgan's Cop Out slid to fourth with $9.1 million, with Avatar rounding out the top five and pulling in $7.7 million in its 12th week.

2009 Sundance Spotlight: Brooklyn's Finest, The Informers, 500 Days of Summer

While I won't be heading down to the 2009 Sundance Film Festival this year, I will be sorting through the humongous pile of festival entries to share with you some of the films I think look most promising. From quirky documentaries to talented young filmmaker debuts to a potential runaway hit, Sundance is filled with entertainment possibilities. Here are today's selections:

Brooklyn's Finest
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Brooklyn's Finest just became this year's first sale at Sundance. Apparently "Senator Distribution nabbed North American rights . . . on Saturday night, 24 hours after its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. . . Senator says it will release the film in the fourth quarter for awards consideration." According to Senator president Mark Urman, the company "went into aggressive pursuit right after Friday's screening." Wow! All of this spells good things for the cop drama which features a stellar cast (Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, Ellen Barkin). The plot is described as: "Three unconnected Brooklyn cops wind up at the same deadly location after enduring vastly different career paths." The guy responsible for the screenplay has a unique and intriguing story himself (you can read about it here). No clips available just yet, but now that it's been purchased I'm sure we'll hear and see much more about this film in the future.

Two more great-looking movies, with talented folks like Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Mickey Rourke, if you

read more. The Informers Well, the long-awaited movie adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's collection of short stories is upon us. The movie, starring a whole lot of people from the '80s and early '90s (most notably Mickey Rourke, continuing his amazing career comeback) is about LA in the '80s in all its beautiful, indulgent, moral-decaying glory. The Informers also includes Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Billy Bob Thornton, Chris Isaak, and the late Brad Renfro (his final role). I have mixed feelings about this movie, but then again, any trailer that includes a song by A Flock of Seagulls deserves a chance in my book. FYI: The trailer for The Informers below is not suitable for work due to some topless ladies. Proceed with caution: 500 Days of Summer Oh, man. Could these two be cuter together? I think not. I was so excited when this casting news first came out and I'm even more thrilled that the movie's premiering at Sundance (to not-bad reviews so far) and has a release date (July 24) and now has a super cute teaser trailer (see below!). At first glance, the movie's description sounds like a little tale of unrequited love (boy loves girl, girl doesn't believe in love) but here's the part that got me really curious: "energized by dance numbers, split screens, and two dynamic performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel." According to the AP, the upcoming X-Files movie has an official title! It's now called The X-Files: I Want to Believe, and will still open July 25.
Richard Gere is joining two movie projects, writes Variety. He'll costar alongside Hilary Swank in the Amelia Earhart biopic, and he'll star in the cop drama Brooklyn's Finest.
Iron & Wine, Flight of the Conchords, and Wolf Parade are among the bands scheduled for Sub Pop Records' 20th anniversary party this Summer, Billboard reports.
ComingSoon reports that Danielle Panabaker will play the female lead in the remake of Friday the 13th.
Get ready for more "green" storylines: NBC is bringing back Green is Universal for Earth Day, and The Futon Critic has the details. Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter writes that Fox has started an eco campaign of its own.
The writer responsible for adapting Bringing Down the House into 21 is at it again, writing the screenplay version of a lottery scam memoir, Money for Nothing, writes Hollywood Reporter.
Hollywood Reporter writes that Stan Lee will launch yet another superhero franchise, titled Legion of 5.
The New York Times has a very sweet piece on the classic Disney animator Ollie Johnston who died on Monday.
According to ComingSoon, Demi Moore has landed roles in two indie movies: Happy Tears, in which she'll star alongside Parker Posey, and Bunraku, starring Woody Harrelson.
