Are You More Likely to See a Broadway Show If a Famous Musician Is Behind It?

Regina Spektor is headed to the Great White Way! It was announced yesterday that the famous songstress will be creating the score for a new Broadway musical inspired by Sleeping Beauty.

As a Spektor fan, this news makes perfect sense to me. Her unique brand of musical whimsy - with just a tinge of darker themes - is a great fit for the beloved fairytale. The show will reportedly be ready for the 2010-2011 Broadway season, but they're also talking about doing shows outside of Manhattan to spread the love.

I'm obviously for it, but I want to hear what you guys think about Spektor's new gig. With more and more artists helping pen musicals - i.e., Bono and The Edge doing the upcoming theatrical version of Spider-Man or Elton John doing Billy Elliot - does their involvement make you more likely to buy tickets?

Wicked the Movie: Based on the Book or the Musical? Or Both?

There's exciting news swirling around lately that the Broadway musical Wicked will definitely be made into a movie. According to Variety, Universal Pictures (the same studio behind Mamma Mia!) is taking "formative steps" to get Wicked into movie theaters soon.

Like so many others, I have a history with the Broadway show that started with enjoying the book by Gregory Maguire that inspired the stage show. I thought his satirical vision of Oz as a dark land rife with political issues and tensions was a cool twist on an old tale we all know.

The book also takes a closer look at Elphaba (a.k.a. The Wicked Witch of the West), depicting her as an insecure girl who comes of age as an outsider because of the way she looks (it's seriously not easy being green). This is the part of Maguire's work that the musical is focused on.

I know that the musical is beloved by many, but long before there were any songs, I totally envisioned a Tim Burton-esque adaptation of the book that was at once fantastical and dark. So what are you hoping for? Should they make a straight adaptation of the musical, or should they draw a little more from the book when making the film version? Or maybe there's something in the middle, like Burton's Sweeney Todd.

Would You See 9 to 5 on Broadway?

The recent casting news about Allison Janney reminded me that Janney is also set to perform in the Broadway musical version of the 1980 movie 9 to 5, which starred Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin. The stage musical will premiere in Los Angeles in September and then move on to New York.

I gotta say, I'm pretty excited to see this show! I love the movie, and I can see it becoming a really fun musical. What about you? Do you think this will be a great movie-to-Broadway musical adaptation? Or will it just be silly?

What Do You Think About a Phantom of the Opera, Part II?

According to Wikipedia, The Phantom of the Opera's 20-year run on Broadway has been "the most lucrative entertainment enterprise of all time." Capitalizing on the beloved musical's major success, creators of the award-winning show now say a sequel is on the way.

Andrew Lloyd Webber confirmed that he has written a new score for a follow-up musical which will pick up where the first story leaves off, starting with "how the Phantom got away in the big fire and was taken to a thriving Coney Island in old New York."

Will it be called The Phantom of Coney Island? And will fans embrace this second installment from Webber? What do you think about this development? Are you keeping an open mind?

Broadway Musical News: The Couger Meets Cujo

Who knew Stephen King and John Mellencamp had anything in common, much less a desire to write a Broadway musical together? Not I, but apparently it's true, and the two men are collaborating on a musical theater project, scheduled to debut in April 2009, titled Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.

The story follows the legend that grows out of the tragic death of two brothers and a girl in the fictional town of Lake Belle Reve, Miss. The basic musical idea was originally Mellencamp's. He knew he needed a writer to help bring it to the stage and quickly thought of King.

While audiences have seen ghosts and gore on stage before (think Sweeney Todd) spokespeople for the production say this is a touching tale - more Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me, less Carrie.

Did You Ever See Rent on Broadway?

Sad news coming from New York's Nederlander Theater today: Broadway musical Rent is closing after a 12-year run. The last performance will take place June 1. Opening in the spring of 1996, Rent enjoyed immediate and explosive success with both critics and audiences, despite (or perhaps because of) the story's focus on AIDS, drug addiction, and poverty.

I was one of those crazy, obsessed fans when the musical first opened, traveling into the city with my high-school friends to get cheap tickets to the show several times. We'd even wait around afterward for glimpses of the actors emerging from the Nederlander. Later we followed their careers, from Anthony Rapp's solo album to Taye Diggs appearing on Ally McBeal and Jesse L. Martin getting his gig on Law & Order.

Beyonce to Play Aida?

Rumor has it...
Disney is planning to make a live-action movie musical version of the hit Broadway play "Aida," which was based on the popular opera by Giuseppe Verdi, which was originally based on a story by Auguste Mariette. And just who's being named as the possible actress to play the lead Nubian princess? None other than Miss Beyonce Knowles.

Jim Hill Media, a source of news and commentary mostly about Disney projects, states: "The Mouse is reportedly already in talks with this pop diva, trying to convince Ms. Knowles to make Aida her follow-up project to Dreamgirls."

Sure, um, okay.
I guess this makes sense. Sure, I'd rather see a better actress take this role (and I know many people prefer Beyonce to sing instead of act - if she has to do anything at all), but I'll bet Disney's not thinking quite along those lines. What do you think about this news? Who else could (or should) play Aida?

"The Coast of Utopia" Makes History at 61st Tony Awards

With the series finale of "The Sopranos" on everyone's minds, last night's Tony Awards were a little bit overshadowed. That being said, the 61st Annual Tony Awards brought out some big names in NYC last night to celebrate all that is wonderful on Broadway. I myself was too wrapped up in the HBO Tony to catch most of the show, but I'm certain there was plenty of singing, dancing, sequins and fabulousness to go around.
