Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes. So I take a spin through each week's iTunes music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. It's a pretty light week for new releases, but in addition to the picks below, you can also snag a new collection from Ghostface Killah and the soundtrack to Revolutionary Road.

It certainly doesn't take long for a song to get covered these days! It's only been a few weeks since we first heard Britney Spears's "Womanizer," and British star Lily Allen has just released her own, slightly slowed down version.
I was actually surprised by how faithful Allen's version (which apparently has gotten her in a bunch of trouble with her record label!) is to the original — a few fewer vocal effects, maybe, and a little more downbeat, sort of "Lily Allen sings 'Womanizer' in a piano bar."

Comeback kid: Britney Spears's new album, Circus, is being described as "adequate" by most reviewers, and from what I've listened to so far, I'd agree.

Last year was supposed to be the big Britney Spears comeback show at the MTV Video Music Awards — but this year marked Britney's real return. Britney won her first VMA (and, before long, her second and third), taking home the moonmen for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me."
Russell Brand hosted the 25th ceremony, which included today's chart-toppers putting their own spins on classic songs (Katy Perry singing a snippet of "Like a Virgin," etc).

After Britney Spears made her first appearance on How I Met Your Mother last month, show star Neil Patrick Harris got into a kind of media kerfuffle over whether he did or did not say he wanted to keep guest stars like Britney off the show. So I'm finding it a little amusing that when Brit returns to the show tonight, she seems to be spending most of her scenes with Harris.
Britney is back to reprise her role as Abby, the receptionist in Ted's dermatologist's office.

In the May issue of Wired magazine, the Swedish pop star Robyn is hailed as the anti-Britney Spears: She's a good-looking blonde who happens to be a talented songwriter, she's uncompromising when it comes to producing chart-topping hits for a demanding label, and instead of making out with Madonna and divorcing K-Fed, she started her own label and carved out a long and respectable music career.
It is striking to see how two charismatic, talented youngsters could start out along a similar path in the music business and end up in such dramatically different places. As Wired somewhat dramatically put it, their different choices "would lead one to hipster stardom and the other to madness."

So last night was Britney Spears' big acting comeback on How I Met Your Mother, and if the goal was to get some big ratings for the on-the-bubble comedy, it worked: The show pulled in 10.6 million viewers and hit its highest ratings ever in the key 18-49 demographic. Coupled with the better than average 9.7 million viewers the show got last week, I have to think things are looking pretty good for a season four.
Personally, I thought the best part of the episode was Ted's two-minute date (watch it here), and I definitely think Stella was supposed to be the mother — had that whole Alicia Silverstone/Britney/Sarah Chalke thing not happened, that is.

Well, folks, here it is: Your first real look at Britney Spears' highly anticipated guest spot on How I Met Your Mother. Pop had a split second clip of her earlier this week, which was enough to get us excited but not really showcase her role. As we know, she plays Abby, a receptionist at Ted's dermatologist's office who falls for Ted — almost immediately, if these little clips are any indication.
