How Do You Feel About Actors Gaining Weight For Roles?

Renee Zellweger is reprising her role in the third installment of the popular book-turned-film series, Bridget Jones' Diary, but this time she's doing it without all the extra weight. Well, sort of . . .

Instead of turning to a high fat diet of doughnuts and pizza like she did in the past, Zellweger will be relying on makeup and wardrobe to mimic the extra weight needed for the title role.

E! Online quoted a source as telling Britain's Reveal magazine: "Renee will be wearing a fat suit in the third film as it took her a while to lose the weight last time. She's also thinking about the effect quickly putting on and then losing 30 pounds has on her body."

I admire that Zellweger is embracing the role she's playing, but am relieved she's not relying on harmful methods like yo-yo dieting and exercising to portray the 30 pound difference between herself and her character this time around.

Besides Zellweger, actors like Matt Damon, Beyonce, and Charlize Theron have used unconventional methods to put on weight for film roles. Do you think it's OK for the sake of believability?

It's a strange experience when you realize you're enjoying a movie more than you enjoyed the book on which it's based because so often the opposite is true. After all, presumably an author has the advantage because he/she can provide deep insight into characters that actors have to convey with but a glance. Every so often, though, a story makes a lot more sense onscreen. Here I've compiled a list of some stories I'd rather watch than read. What are yours? Just hit "Start" to begin the slideshow.

Each week, we'll choose a theme for a Movie Night and feature three must-see movies in keeping with that theme. This week's theme: New Year's Eve films, and it so happens that each of these movies is a also a romantic comedy. So whether you're happily in love or going solo, these films will help you ring in the new year with a heartwarming laugh either way.

When Harry Met Sally
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star as Harry and Sally, two "just friends" who ride the waves of their respective relationships together, developing a strong friendship over the years. The problem arises, however: "Can a man and a woman remain friends without sex getting in the way?" The culminating New Year's Eve scene makes my stomach go all woogly every time.

Bridget Jones 3 Movie Confirmed: Are Her Foibles in Love Becoming Unrelatable?

After years of will she or won't she, it's been confirmed that Bridget Jones is coming back for a third movie. The film will be based on the third book Helen Fielding - author of Bridget Jones's Diary and its sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason - is working on right now. The only hints we have about the plot is what Colin Firth, aka Mark Darcy from the films, spilled last year:

"I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can't have children, I think that's the way it goes on. So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she's left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?"

Personally, I found the love triangle between Bridget, Mark, and Daniel tiring and unrealistic after the first film and book, so to have it continue on to the third seems like a shameless attempt to keep Hugh Grant involved. I also loved Bridget's character in the first story and felt like her single life was what made her relatable; her being married in the sequel just felt forced, so I can't even imagine her being a mother. But what say you? Are you excited to see what's in store for Bridget?

The Vampire Diaries "As I Lay Dying": The Good, the Bad, and the Bloody

This week is The Vampire Diaries season finale, and like the movie the town is showing in the episode, some characters are Gone With the Wind by the end. If you've ever created an OKCupid profile, expect to receive a doting email on your birthday that not only reminds you of the passing of time, but also inquires about your relationship status with the subtlety of an overbearing family. "Still single?" the text reads. "Come check out your matches and find the men who want to meet you for your birthday!"

I'm sure it's standard marketing procedure, but I'm surprised a dating site that prides itself on revealing our hidden natures would make this gaffe, however trivial and humorous. There are middle-age people on these sites! Could you imagine receiving an email on your 50th birthday asking if you're still single? Apparently, nobody has studied the effect of age reminders and relationship-status inquiries on mood-regulating brain chemicals. Not positive brand association!
