Box Office: Chronicle Edges Into First Place

Supernatural teens used their powers to win the box office this weekend, as new sci-fi release Chronicle won first place with $22 million. Daniel Radcliffe's horror flick The Woman in Black was hot on its heels, though, earning $21 million in its first weekend. Last weekend's box office winner, The Grey, came in third with $9.5 million. John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore couldn't pull off a Big Miracle for their film, however, opening in fourth place with just $8.5 million. Rounding out the top five was Underworld: Awakening, with $5.6 million.

Box Office: The Grey Takes a Bite

Liam Neeson was on top of the box office this weekend, thanks to the debut of his new film, The Grey. The flick took in $20 million, giving it the edge over last week's winner Underworld: Evolution, which slid to second with $12.5 million. Katherine Heigl's One For the Money debuted in third with $11.7 million, followed by Red Tails with $10.4 million. Man on a Ledge rounded out the top five, taking in $8.3 million in its opening weekend.

Box Office: Kate Beckinsale's Underworld Rises to the Top

Audiences were eager to see Kate Beckinsale back in her leather suit, as her action sequel Underworld: Awakening won first place at the box office with $25.4 million. It was followed by historical drama and fellow new release Red Tails, which earned $19.1 million. The third spot went to last weekend's box office winner Contraband, with $12.2 million. The 9/11 tearjerker Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close came in at No. 4 in its first weekend in wide release with $10.5 million, while Stephen Soderbergh's new action release Haywire rounded out the top five with $9 million.

Box Office: Contraband Delivers the Goods

Audiences were looking for action in the theater this weekend, as the Mark Wahlberg-led new release Contraband won first place at the box office with $24.1 million. Following behind was the re-release of Beauty and the Beast in 3D, which earned $18.5 million, and was also a brand new entrant into theaters. In third place was the sequel Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which added $11.5 million to its haul, while Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah's Joyful Noise was hot on its heels with $11.3 million. Rounding out the top five was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with $8.4 million.

Box Office: The Devil Inside Brings Big Scares

January means slim pickings for new movies at the box office, which made it easy for horror flick The Devil Inside to debut at No. 1 with $34.5 million. It came in ahead of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which took in $20.5 million. Behind it was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, with $14.1 million, followed by The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with $11.3 million. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked rounded out the top five and took in $9.5 million.

Box Office: Tom Cruise Completes His Mission

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol reaped the benefits of wide release, and won the weekend box office with $29.5 million. Behind it was last week's champ, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which garnered $20.2 million in its second weekend out. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo debuted in third with $12.7 million, closely followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which took in $12.7 million. Completing the top five was The Adventures of Tintin, which opened to $9.7 million.

Matt Damon's We Bought a Zoo only earned $9.4 million in its first weekend, while War Horse made $7.5 million in its Christmas Day release.

Box Office: Sherlock Holmes Solves the Box Office Puzzle

Sequels dominated the box office this weekend, but it was Robert Downey Jr.'s reprisal of a famous detective that had the most success. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows came in first at the box office with $40 million, followed by animated sequel Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, with $23.5 million. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, the fourth installment in the franchise, opened in limited release and came in third with $13 million. New Year's Eve earned the No. 4 spot with $7.4 million, while The Sitter rounded out the top five with $4.4 million. Roman Polanski's Carnage also opened in limited release, earning a modest $85,700.

Box Office: New Year's Eve Has a Faint Sparkle

It was an incredibly lackluster showing at the movies this weekend, with New Year's Eve taking the crown, but only pulling a meager $13.7 million in the weakest box office weekend since 2008. It did manage to beat Jonah Hill's new comedy, The Sitter, which followed in second with $10 million. Breaking Dawn Part 1 was finally knocked out of the top spot, and settled for third with $7.9 million. The Muppets took fourth place with $7.1 million, and Arthur Christmas rounded out the top five with $6.6 million.

Box Office: Breaking Dawn Pulls Off a Threepeat Victory

With no new major releases this weekend, the box office suffered, but Twilight didn't. Breaking Dawn Part 1 landed at the top of the box office for the third weekend in a row with $16.9 million, in what was the second-lowest grossing weekend of 2011. The Muppets came in second place with $11.2 million, and was followed by a series of family-friendly flicks. Hugo nabbed the No. 3 spot with $7.6 million, while Arthur Christmas came in fourth with $7.4 million, and Happy Feet Two rounded out the top five with $6 million. In limited release, Shame earned $361,000 - not bad considering the NC-17 flick featuring Michael Fassbender as a sex addict only opened in 10 theaters.

Box Office: Breaking Dawn Bites The Muppets

There was no stopping The Twilight Saga at the box office over Thanksgiving weekend; Breaking Dawn Part 1 earned the most money again, taking in $62.3 million for the five-day weekend. The Muppets settled for second but opened strong with $42 million. Happy Feet 2 finished third with $18.3 million, while new animated film Arthur Christmas came in fourth with $17 million. Martin Scorsese's children's movie Hugo had a nice debut with $15.3 million and rounded out the top five.
