New Song and Video From Jay-Z's American Gangster

Jay-Z fans, take heart: You'll have plenty to hold you over until the November release of Jay's new album, which is inspired by the upcoming movie American Gangster.

Yesterday, Fader debuted a new song from the project called "Roc Boys (and the Winner Is)," which you can listen to online. I don't love it as much as "Blue Magic," maybe becaause the brass-laden beats sound like something recycled off of Kingdom Come.

But that's ok, because I'm too busy watching the official video for "Blue Magic," which hit the web today. Much like the mood of the music, the video straddles old Hollywood and modern-day New York, with imagery of fancy cars, artful graffiti, and even a glimpse at Denzel Washington, who stars in the movie about a 1970s heroin kingpin. Last week, I told you that Jay-Z is releasing an album in November inspired by the upcoming movie American Gangster. My first thought? This could be really good. But I barely had time to speculate about what it might sound like before Jay-Z gave us a little taste.

This weekend, he released a teaser video for the first track, called "Blue Magic," one of nine songs inspired by the film, which stars Denzel Washington and tells the saga of a '70s heroin kingpin in New York. My first thought after hearing the clip? This could be really, really good.

The Neptunes-produced track hinges on a menacing piano hook and has a definite '70s vibe. It reminds me a little bit of the Clipse's Hell Hath No Fury, but with a more retro urban atmosphere. Jay-Z wrote a song to honor his newborn daughter, Blue Ivy Carter! In record time, Jay got together the lyrics and music for "Glory," which even features some audio from the little one.

In the track, Jay refers to Blue as "God's gift" and "the most beautifulest thing in the world." The new dad rapped, "Words can't describe what I'm feeling, for real." He goes on to say "my greatest creation was you." Hugo: 3 Reasons Why You Should See It - and 3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't

Iconic film director Martin Scorsese veers off his beaten path with this week's Hugo. Based on the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the film tells the tale of a young orphan who is secretly living in a train station in Paris. He spends his days winding the clocks in the station, hiding from a villainous station agent, and trying to fix an automaton (a robot-like machine) left behind by his deceased father. Scorsese definitely packs magic into this film, but it's not exactly the children's fantasy film I was expecting. Before you head to the theater this Thanksgiving weekend, check out my reasons why this might be the film for you - and why you might want to avoid it.

Why you should see it:

The cinematography is stunning. With Scorsese at the helm, it's pretty much guaranteed that you're in for a visual treat, and Hugo is no different. His depiction of 1930s Paris in the wintertime is dazzling; the train station where Hugo lives and spends most of his time is enveloped in warm tones and rich colors, making the film look like a beautifully illustrated children's book come to life - which is exactly what it is.
The acting is superb. It's no surprise that a veteran like Ben Kingsley delivers a spot-on performance as a prickly man who fixes toys in the train station. His mysterious animosity towards Hugo and Hugo's desire to fix his father's automaton becomes the crux of the film, and Kingsley turns in a complex performance as a character with a secret. In turn, Sacha Baron Cohen provides comic relief as the station agent with a bum leg who is intent on having Hugo shipped off to an orphanage. However, it's the performances from young actors Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz that hold the film together, and both are impressive. Butterfield particularly does a wonderful job carrying the film; his big, curious blue eyes portray Hugo's loneliness, curiosity, and pain, and he brings his A-game to the film's most emotional scenes.
The story has enchanting elements. I loved the whimsical idea behind Hugo, and Scorsese captures all of these elements perfectly. From the automaton to Isabelle's fascination with storytelling to the Parisian setting, Hugo certainly qualifies as escapist entertainment that pays homage to the magic of moviemaking, on multiple levels.

Poppy King Designs a Lipstick Line For Boots No7

With a successful lipstick line under her belt, as well as collaborations with Kate Spade and J.Crew, Poppy King is reminding us why she calls herself the Lipstick Queen. This month, Boots No7 will release a collection - The Magic of Lipstick - which King created for the company. Almost a year in the making, it consists of seven lipsticks and seven matching glosses. "The texture is moisturizing, yet has traction," King explains.

King, who has been a fan of Boots No7 for years, says she discovered the brand during her travels to London. While designing the line, King went through the company's archives, drawing much of her inspiration from the 1930s. "I wanted to use the silver that was on the Boots packaging then, and the shape and styling of the number '7' reminiscent of the '30s," she said. She also hoped to capture the era's enthusiasm for lip color. "I wanted to ease women back into lipstick - the Boots' customer needs something that works, something that is elegant, and something that is low maintenance." Mark Montano's Magical Silver Lake Craft Compound

DIYer, decorator, designer, television host, and all-around crafty guy Mark Montano lives in LA's Silver Lake neighborhood in a home that's a veritable showcase for the projects featured in his DIY books, including The Big-Ass Book of Crafts ($20).

Additionally, his property includes a small back cottage that he uses for crafting and designing. Mark notes that it's "a copy of my main house and is my design studio in the back yard. It's 250 square feet and is painted green and blue stripes inside. It's magical! Like Willy Wonka for craft projects."
