What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to these titles, you can now find the five-disc collector's edition of Blade Runner.

The Simpsons Movie
In case you missed one of the biggest movies of the summer, you can now enjoy The Simpsons Movie in your very own home. In the movie, one of TV's favorite bumbling dads accidentally contaminates Springfield's water supply, and the town is placed under a giant dome by the government. The Simpsons then need to figure out a way to save the day.

The extras feature an assortment of goodies, including audio commentary by various voice actors and the directors, extended and deleted scenes, and a collection of the promotional stuff they did to generate buzz for the summer release. One of these is Homer's guest monologue on The Tonight Show. Woo-hoo!

read more. Stardust One of my December Must-Haves, Neil Gaiman's story Stardust is a fun and magical adventure. The extremely cute Charlie Cox stars as the lovestruck Tristan who promises the woman of his dreams (Sienna Miller) that he'll retrieve a fallen star for her. The star turns out to be Yvaine (Claire Danes), who is also being pursued by brothers competing to take over their father's throne and a witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) hoping to use Yvaine's heart to make her youthful. As Tristan and Yvaine elude their pursuers, they start to fall in love with each other. The special features on this disc are your average blooper reel, making-of featurette and deleted scenes.
Once An Irish musical, Once is one of this year's most acclaimed little movies. The film follows a blossoming relationship between a Dublin street musician ("Guy") and a migrant street hawker ("Girl") as they spend their first week together composing and recording music. Apparently, the actors themselves wrote the music they perform in the movie. The DVD special features include audio commentary by the director and two main actors, a making-of featurette and a free musical download of the track "Falling Slowly."

Scarlett Johansson's Blade Runner Updo: Love It or Leave It?

Scarlett Johansson is a woman known to take a few beauty risks on the red carpet, such as the Blade Runner-esque updo she sported at yesterday's We Bought a Zoo premiere. We've seen similar styles pop up as of late: Preen's Spring 2012 runway featured futuristic, coiled chignons, and stars such as Katy Perry and Dita Von Teese have been known to roll with it as well. While these coiffures typically have a retro, '40s-era quality, in today's looks, they're often updated with modern touches. What's your opinion? Do you find Scarlett's version of victory rolls victorious, or does she miss the mark?

Blade Runner-Esque Chignons Make For a Futuristic Vibe at Preen

One theme we've seen a lot of this Spring 2012 Fashion Week is the balance of masculinity and femininity (see: the androgynous looks at Altuzarra and the sleek, braid-bun updos at Rachel Roy), and now we have Preen doing its own take on the gender-bender phenomenon. Of the '40s-style rolled updos seen on the runway, Paul Hanlon for Aveda explained, "It's a futuristic chignon; a bit Blade Runner, as well." And while the texture was slick and polished for a severe effect, Hanlon made sure the style also featured a modern, not-too-perfect edge, without being overly shellacked.

To create the look, he began by prepping the hair with the brand's Volumizing Tonic, blowing it dry with a round brush. Hair was then twisted back one side at a time, and ends were tucked and pinned within the style. Cool (er, hot) tip: to make sleek styles such as this smoother where needed, spray the area with hair spray (Hanlon used Air Control), and lightly brush the barrel of the curling iron over any wispiness to tame it down.

Guillermo del Toro Believes "Very, Very Strongly" in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Guillermo del Toro is the force behind this weekend's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and he recently spoke about his involvement with the Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce film during a NYC press day. Troy Nixey directed the scary movie, with del Toro operating behind the scenes as a producer and "presenter." Del Toro discussed what his duties included and how he stuck to his original vision for the picture. He also revealed his favorite movies, admiration for the young actress Bailee Madison, and how he thinks perpetuating the weak-females-in-horror-movies cliche is immoral.

On their film having an R rating despite little sex or profanity: "We shot the movie carefully - no profanity, no sex - and it’s not graphic at all. There’s not a single moment when you see anything gory, but when we asked the MPA, 'What would it need to change?' they said, 'The whole movie. It’s too intense . . . it’s intensity with a child.' And frankly, at that point, they said something really nice! They said, 'Why ruin a perfectly good R-rated movie?' Which I thought was very nice coming from them. So we wore it as a badge of honor."
On working with Bailee: "I think the term 'child actor' is a mistake. They're either actors, or they're not; whatever they are, at any age. If a kid is a real actor, he’s a thrill."
On attaching his name to a movie, despite not directing it: "I only presented three movies, one in Spain and The Orphanage internationally, and this is the third time. I only do it when - (a) I am introducing a filmmaker to the world, but (b) I endorse and say I believe in this movie very, very strongly. For whatever reason, it’s a more risky proposition in one way, but it’s one that I believe needs to continue to support first-time filmmakers. . . . I only do it when I fully believe I was involved in the product in a way that is meaningful."
On his favorite movies: "When DVDs came out I made a solemn promise to my wife that I’m just going to get my 10 favorite movies - which are really 7,000 movies. But instinctively, which may change tomorrow, I’d say Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Erich von Stroheim’s Greed, Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner, Beauty and the Beast. It’s almost impossible to make this list. I’d say all Chaplin and Hitchcock . . . it’s impossible. It’s a horrible dilemma."

The Adjustment Bureau: Needs Fixing

Fate versus freewill. Religious theorists and philosophers have contemplated the idea for centuries, and this weekend The Adjustment Bureau tries to tackle the debate. What would you do if you found out your entire life were planned for you? And what if the plan wasn't what you wanted? The weighty subject matter should give you plenty to chew on, but The Adjustment Bureau isn't adept enough to handle the issue. Instead, we get a generic story.

Based on a short story by Philip K. Dick (the sci-fi writer also behind Blade Runner and Minority Report), The Adjustment Bureau stars Matt Damon as David Norris, a politician who crosses paths with a ballerina named Elise (Emily Blunt) in a men's bathroom. Instant sparks ignite, so when they bump into each other again on a bus, David is convinced that fate is intervening. But really, it's a mistake of chance - and it must be corrected. In come suited agents led by Richardson (John Slattery). They're men in charge of monitoring the world (the film suggests they're angels) to make sure everyone proceeds on the path predetermined for them. Since David has fallen off course, they must make sure he forgets about Elise for the sake of his political career. But unfortunately for them, David is quite the smitten schoolboy and isn't willing to let her go.

For my thoughts on the film's problems and Damon's performance,

read more. As the chase begins, David bolts through Manhattan streets to steer clear of Richardson and his men. But how can you outrun or outsmart fate? Especially considering the head of the agency is - as implied in the film - God. There literally is nowhere for David to escape, so you start to wonder where exactly the film can go. Given the story's inventiveness, I kept waiting for a clever twist or unexpected outcome, but the ending is flat and dumbed down. The Adjustment Bureau wants to be a sci-fi film, thriller, and romance all in one, and by trying to do too much, it ultimately runs into problems. It glosses over many of the sci-fi plot components through quick verbal explanation, and the relationship between David and Elise feels rushed. When David first meets the agents, he doesn't seem nearly as concerned with the bizarre group as he is with holding onto Elise's phone number. Not only is it realistic, but it's a little too cheesy. The agents themselves don't help matters; Slattery does the best he can with his role, as does Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) who plays David's personal watcher. But on the whole, they come across as campy and deliver the script's most cliched lines. Damon and Blunt are what ultimately make the film worth watching. Damon was born to play a politician with his charisma, and Blunt's sarcasm makes for fun banter. They have great chemistry, and when the script does allow their relationship to grow, it makes for some of the movie's most gratifying scenes. If only the rest of the film was just as satisfying.

I really appreciate the meditative nature of this seated pose. Not only does it calm my mind, but my hips crave the internal rotation offered by the position of the bent leg; moving the hip joint in this way makes for healthy hips and knees. This variation of Gate offers benefits to the joints by moving them in a direction we don't often do, similar to Hero pose, but this beginner Gate is easier for yoga newbies. Beginner's Gate also provides a gentle stretch for the inner thighs (aka adductors) and hamstrings, making it great for runners and cyclists.
