Robert Redford to Take Bill Bryson's Walk in the Woods

There's a lot of great post-Sundance news out there, but this story is really making me smile: Festival founder Robert Redford has said that his next project will be an adaptation of A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson's best-selling book about an attempt to walk the Appalachian Trail. Redford plans to play Bryson, and Barry Levinson is expected to direct the film.

I'm getting a kick out of the idea of Redford as Bryson, who was an overweight, out-of-shape man edging toward a mid-life crisis when he decided to walk the trail in 1997 (that's the real Bryson up there on the right). And apparently, so is Redford, who told the Associated Press "I don't know when I've read a book that I laughed so loud."

Redford also noted that the landscape of the country will be a big part of the film as Bryson and his hiking companion, Stephen Katz, make their way along the trail. (In the book, the two men didn't finish their hike - so do you think the movie will get a Hollywood ending?)

Other than making me want to read A Walk in the Woods again, this news makes me wonder: Who's going to play Katz? Their hilarious banter is one of the best parts of the book. Any suggestions?

Source, Source, and Source

What's Buzzworthy? Great Travel Writing

If I had lots of money and lots of time, I'd spend it all traveling the world. But I don't, so instead I read travel writing. If I can't visit all the exotic destinations on my wish list, I can at least hear about other people's adventures (and misadventures) in them.

Because the past week was Honeymoon Week on the Sugar Network, I started thinking about travel, and I realized I need some recommendations for great new books that will transport me to places I won't necessarily get to see for myself. So I decided to make <http://teamsugar.com/bookmarks/tags/travel+writing">travel writing the subject of this week's Buzzworthy challenge. Just use Buzzsugar's cool bookmarking tool to bookmark your own and tag them with the phrase travel writing. No Lonely Planet books or other travel guides, please!

I'll post some readers' picks here next week. You can also now make a list of your picks. Here are mine:

' />

Don't worry: TeamSugar makes it easy to bookmark and capture anything on the Web that you consider "Buzzworthy." If you already have a "That's Fab" button on your browser's tool bar, you can use that to bookmark your Buzzworthy items.
Why Do Forks Have Exactly Four Tines?

You may have noticed that a fork nearly always has four tines, or prongs, on it. In the several times a day you use this eating utensil, have you ever wondered how it came to look the way it does today?

This wasn't always the case. The fork actually started out in Western Europe as an agricultural tool, eventually evolving to become a kitchenware in the 1500s. Back then, early versions only contained two tines. But according to Bill Bryson, author of the book At Home, two-tined forks caused a lot of pain to diners who accidentally jarred themselves, perhaps after one too many tipples.

To rectify this problem, fork makers experimented with a greater number of tines, but ultimately settled on four as the most comfortable for diners.
