Do You Still Care About Big Brother?

Big Brother has been a reliable Summer hit for CBS for the past several years, but a recent Winter outing didn't do so well in the ratings.

Now the show is back starting on Sunday, with a new cast - including the oldest participant ever, a 75-year-old great-grandfather named Jerry MacDonald - and a promise that the show is returning to the basics that made it a hit.

We're getting the typical onslaught of meet-the-players videos and even a house tour (see below), but after that dismal Winter, I'm wondering: Do you still care about Big Brother?

ComingSoon reports that Harry Potter 6 will definitely be released in IMAX when it hits theaters November 21.
ABBA drummer Ola Brunkert has died at the age of 62, writes Billboard.
Though the current season hasn't been getting great ratings, another season of Big Brother has been slated for this summer, Reuters reports.
CBS Films shelled out a cool $1 million for an untitled Dan Fogelman comedy script about four semi-retired baby boomers who take a trip to Las Vegas, according to Variety.
Justine Bateman will guest-star on Desperate Housewives playing an artist living with Gaby and Carlos, TV Guide reports.

Radiohead has launched a contest for animated, fan-made videos for any song from In Rainbows, according to the Associated Press.

Jordin Sparks will open for Alicia Keys on her North American As I Am tour that kicks off April 19 in Hampton, Virginia, E! Online reports.
HBO's long-awaited adaptation of David McCullough's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography John Adams has a premiere date, according to Zap2It. The seven-part miniseries starring Paul Giamatti will start on Sunday, March 16.
ComingSoon has news that the same guys who wrote Saw IV and Saw V will write the Hellraiser remake Clive Barker Presents: Hellraiser.
French writer and filmmaker Alain Robbe-Grillet has died today at age 85, Reuters reports. Robbe-Grillet first came to fame as a novelist who rejected conventional writing structures in a style that came to be known as the "new novel."
Variety writes that Persepolis was screened legally in Iran, despite the fact that the way the film presents the Iranian Revolution had originally outraged the government.
MTV will run a 22-minute sneak peek of Internet series Quarterlife prior to the show's premiere on NBC. The Futon Critic has the details.
A national autism group is demanding an apology from CBS over a remark a contestant on Big Brother made, writes the Associated Press. The contestant who made the remark said he works for an autism foundation.
Billboard has the news that American Idol is teaming up with iTunes to offer downloads of every performance from the top 24 contestants. Full songs will be 99 cents, while full videos of the final 12 contestants will be $1.99. Don't we get this kind of thing for free from other networks?

Meet the Housemates of Big Brother's Winter Edition

Starting next week, we'll get to see how CBS' steamy summer reality hit, Big Brother, fares during the colder months. The ninth edition of the show, which kicks off on Tuesday, Feb. 12, brings us 16 new contestants to eavesdrop on several times a week.

Of course, it wouldn't be Big Brother without a twist: This time, all 16 contestants are single, and when they arrive in the house, they'll be paired up with a pre-selected "soul mate" who will be their partner throughout the game's many twists and schemes - love connection or not. They even have to sleep in the same bed, which just seems wrong to me, though I guess the whole idea of living in a house with strangers under 24-hour surveillance seems a little wrong to me, too.

The show will take over three spots on the CBS schedule: 9 p.m. Tuesdays and 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays, with Wednesdays being the weekly eviction broadcast. The 24-hour live feeds will be available again this round, too, if you're into that.

What the Writers' Strike Means for Winter TV

We've been hearing it since even before the Hollywood writers' strike officially began last month: No writers means more reality TV, more game shows, and more series the networks weren't sure they wanted at all.

Now there's proof.

CBS has released its schedule for January and February programming, and pieces of NBC's plan are emerging as well. So far, it's good news for fans of Law and Order and Big Brother . . . and not so great for everyone else. Some of the plans:

Law and Order will air Wednesday nights starting Jan. 2. Law and Order: Criminal Intent, which NBC pawned off to USA for the fall, will return to NBC on Jan. 9. The CI episodes will be the same ones that have been airing on USA.
The first-ever non-summer edition of Big Brother will air Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays starting Feb. 12.
Also returning Feb. 12: Jericho, which was given seven more episodes after fans launched a nut-buying campaign in the spring.
The New Adventures of Old Christine will take over the 9:30 p.m. slot in the Monday comedy lineup starting Jan. 28. It will be joined by The Captain, a comedy about the eclectic crowd living in a famous Hollywood apartment building starring Jeffrey Tambor, Chris Klein, and Raquel Welch.

Fox, which is not as hurt by the strike over the winter because of American Idol, was the first to announce its schedule, while ABC's plans are still under wraps. The networks and writers are returning to negotiations today after the producers' most recent proposal was slammed by writers last week. But even if a deal is struck soon, it still looks like we'll be stuck with replacement programming come January.

"Big Brother" kicked off its eighth season on CBS this week, with some of the houseguests discovering they'd be sharing their living space with someone from their past. I've always thought "Big Brother" made it easy for fans to get hooked, what with the three weekly airings, the 24/7 access to the house and this year's addition of "America's Player," which lets viewers decide what one person in the house does. So, I've got to ask: How obsessed are you?

Tyler, Texas isn't thrilled about hosting "Anchorwoman," the Fox reality show where a model will try to make it as a journalist, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
Tom Wolfe's hallucinogenic book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test will be made into a movie with Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant spearheading, Variety reports.
According to Reuters, The Pink Panther 2 has a director (Harald Zwart, of Agent Cody Banks fame), and Steve Martin reprising his lead role.

Comedic lady Elizabeth Banks will next star in a remake of the Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters, says Hollywood Reporter.
Tim Story, director of Barbershop and both Fantastic Four movies, will direct The Losers, which is based on a non-superhero-themed comic book, Variety says.
In a pact with Bollywood studio Yash Raj Films, Disney is readying to sign an agreement to make at least one animated feature film voiced by Indian movie stars per year, Reuters reports.
Pitchfork reveals the tracklist for the new M.I.A. album, Kala, featuring Timbaland.
