Better Off Dead Director Back in Action!

It's been 18 years since director Savage Steve Holland has sat in the director's chair for a feature-length film, and now he's back! After writing and directing both Better Off Dead (1985) and One Crazy Summer (1986), Holland went on to direct Disney kid stuff for TV like "Lizzie McGuire."

Now, it sounds like he's returning to his quirky '80s filmmaking ways with The Big One 3, another teenage romp only this time based on his own experience as a thirteen-year-old. Hollywood Reporter continues:

[Producer Warren] Zide described the script, which sat on Holland's shelf for a while, as something that will compliment "Dead" and "Summer," making it a trilogy of sorts.

"This is based on a true events in Savage's life," Zide said. "When he was a kid, he had his 13th birthday party and the only one that showed up was a clown, and all that that guy did was hit on his sister."

"The world needs another Savage movie, done today for today's generation," Zide said. "This is classic Savage."

I agree: The world does need another Better Off Dead-like movie. Fingers crossed they can get Cusack to come back and play the dad.

And in some surprise news from just today, Holland has also just agreed to direct a National Lampoon's comedy titled National Lampoon's Ratko: The Dictator's Son which "centers on a dictator's son who heads to America to attend college." Going from kid's TV to directing two comedies - this guy's on a roll.

Becoming completely financially independent can be scary, but it's also very liberating. Kiplinger gives advice on how to establish your financial independence.

Not only is it difficult for us twentysomethings to wholeheartedly embrace adulthood, it's often also a challenge for our parents to let us go. Baby-boomer parents are generally known for mollycoddling their children, even after we move out of the house and into our own adult lives. Some parents have shown up for their kids' job interviews, and others have called up human resource departments at their adult kids' workplaces to complain about bad performance reviews or to negotiate salaries on behalf of their children.

They may mean well, but such extreme helicopter parents are actually hindering their children from growing into independent adults. "If a child is receiving too much help, then they have no incentive to succeed or become independent," says Erin Baehr, of the financial planning firm Baehr Family Financial, in Stroudsburg, Pa. "They may also be setting themselves up for some possible financial trouble down the road."

We certainly don't want that. At the same time, as young adults, we shouldn't be so dead set on finding our independence that we end up punishing ourselves by turning down valuable financial guidance and support from Mom and Dad.

So how about meeting in the middle? You can stay open to your parents' assistance but also set limits on how involved in your life you want them to be. For example, when it comes to parental career advice, Marty Martin, a financial psychologist at Aequus Wealth Management Resources, in Chicago, suggests you say, "Mom and Dad, I would really appreciate any advice you may have before I go to my job interview, and I will contact you after it happens. But I really need to do this on my own."

5 Steps For Making False Eyelashes Look More Natural

For special evening events or a night on the town, false eyelash strips (in lieu of individual lashes) provide glitz and eye-popping power to make the time and effort worth it. Armed with a few cool tricks up your sleeve, you can easily blend them in with your natural lashes so they don't look overly obvious. Celebrity makeup artist and Vanitymark Cosmetics founder, Brett Freedman, offers a few ways to make the whole false eyelash strip application go more smoothly.

Cut the strip lashes so they are as long as the length between the center of your eye to the outer corner. "Remember it's all about blending your inner lash line lashes with the faux," Freedman explains. Avoid starting too close to your inner eye, because it's "a dead giveaway and difficult to glue down in that naturally sparser area."
Spread a thin line of glue along the thread, and blow on it a little to allow the glue to become a little dry and tacky.
Use your fingers to apply the fake lash to the outer corner of your lash line (and not your lid). Then, use tweezers to press the strip down securely along the lash line. If you are hesitant, Freedman promises it gets better with practice. "It's like riding a bike," he explains, adding, "Once you do it a few times it's way easier."
Hold down both edges of the false lash for a few minutes until the glue dries to lock them in place.
To finish, do a quick pump with an eyelash curler and top off with a few coats of mascara to blend the natural and faux lashes together.

The Mikaelson family is the focus of this week's The Vampire Diaries, as Esther goes forward with her plan to kill her own children, abominations though they may be. Elena spends much of the episode as a hostage in an underground hole, while Damon and Stefan scramble to save the girl they both love. There are a couple of shocking turns for two characters: one that's actually not that surprising in retrospect, and one I didn't see coming at all.
