Oh. My. Gosh. Diablo Cody just won for Best Original Screenplay! This category was awesomely female-dominated, and Ms. Cody beat out the writers of Lars and the Real Girl, Michael Clayton, Ratatouille, and The Savages. What do you think of this win?

The Oscar Nominations: Snap Judgments

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and now that we've had time to digest the news, we have a few reactions to share. From the positive and excited to the slightly disappointed, check out our thoughts on the 2012 Academy Award nominations, and be sure to share yours too.

It's rare for a comedy to be able to compete with all of the heavy dramas of award season, especially an R-rated comedy, but Bridesmaids impressed us by not just nabbing a supporting actress nomination for Melissa McCarthy, but for best original screenplay for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. Nice work, ladies!
We were happy to see acting nominations for Nick Nolte in Warrior and Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Both men have been left off a lot of lists (like the Golden Globes), but we're so glad that they pulled in Oscar nominations since these were two performances we felt strongly about.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo may have been passed over in most major categories, but its lead actress, Rooney Mara, was still recognized. The Academy seems to love its ingénues, and we're glad they chose Rooney for her brave breakout role.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close has suffered from some bad reviews, but not from the Academy: it scored a best picture nomination and a nod for supporting actor Max von Sydow. We liked him in the role, but it's still a surprise to see the movie come up so strongly.
The Tree of Life was a similar surprise, since the Summer release had polarized reviewers and audiences and didn't seem to have much award season steam. But the movie still managed to join the race with nods for best picture and best director for Terrence Malick.

Announcing the 2012 Oscar Nominations!

The 2012 Oscar nominations have been announced! Lots of award season regulars, like The Artist and The Descendants, got some love, but there were also a handful of surprises, like nominations for Nick Nolte, Gary Oldman, and Terrence Malick. Bridesmaids also scored big, with noms for best original screenplay and best supporting actress for Melissa McCarthy.

The Academy chose nine films for best picture, with lots of familiar titles in there, plus a couple that had early awards buzz but haven't necessarily had consistent attention, like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and The Tree of Life. The films that racked up the most nominations were Hugo with 11 and The Artist with 10.

Jennifer Garner Has a Winter Weekend With Ben, Sera, and Violet

Jennifer Garner kept busy over the weekend, taking Violet to karate class on Friday and then ballet on Saturday. Violet and Jen rewarded themselves with a hearty breakfast with Seraphina and Ben following the dance class. Jen's been sticking to a healthy eating routine during her third pregnancy, and has been spotted stocking up on nutritious snacks for her loved ones.

The foursome are prepping to welcome a fifth member into their family soon! Jen and Ben skipped out on all the Golden Globes action this year and opted to hang at home. The pair are both already the proud owners of Golden Globe statues; Ben shares his with Matt Damon for their best original screenplay, Good Will Hunting, while Jen earned a best actress in a TV drama for her role in Alias. The power couple are shaping up to be possible contenders at next year's show, with Ben's still-untitled Terrence Malick project and his directorial effort Argo heading into theaters in 2012. Jen also has her own projects set for release, as her comedy Butter hits big screens March 16 and The Odd Life of Timothy Green is scheduled for an August premiere.

Announcing the 2012 Golden Globe Winners!

And so we have another Golden Globes under our belt! This year's show brought a new round of quips from host Ricky Gervais, a dedication to Morgan Freeman, and a ton of statuettes honoring 2011's finest in film and on TV. There were a few repeats from the Critics' Choice winners: George Clooney, Octavia Spencer, and Christopher Plummer all picked up two trophies this week. On the other hand, Meryl Streep and The Descendants both won big for the first time this week, proving that it's anybody's game at the SAGs and Oscars.

On the TV side of things, new series Homeland was crowned best TV drama, while its star Claire Danes picked up the statuette for best lead actress. Newbies Matt LeBlanc and Laura Dern also took home awards, while Modern Family earned its first ever Golden Globe.

Michelle and George Take Home Big Wins at the Star-Studded Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais was back, and as irreverent as ever, as the host of the 2012 Golden Globes. He kicked off the proceedings by pointing jabs at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, saying that the Globes are "just like the Oscars, but with less esteem." Celeb cameos started on a high note with an appearance from Johnny Depp, and early supporting honors went to Christopher Plummer for Beginners. Shortly after, Madonna unexpectedly was the winner in the best original score category for W.E. Michelle Williams won in the best actress in a musical or comedy category for My Week With Marilyn, making her BFF and date Busy Philipps one happy lady! Sweetly, Michelle thanked her daughter Matilda, saying, "I'm a mother first, and an actress second."

Further movie accolades went to Woody Allen, for his Midnight in Paris screenplay, and best supporting actress, Octavia Spencer for The Help. Iran's A Separation took home the best foreign film distinction over Angelina Jolie's In the Land of Blood and Honey, and Morgan Freeman made a touching speech accepting his Cecil B. DeMille prize. Angelina Jolie took the stage to present Martin Scorsese with the best directing statue for Hugo. Best actor in a musical or comedy went to Jean Dujardin for The Artist, and a very dapper Colin Firth handed off the best actress in a drama honor to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. Natalie Portman had the enviable task of bestowing best actor on George Clooney for The Descendants, and gave girlfriend Stacy Keibler a celebratory peck on the cheek en route to the podium. The Artist was crowned best motion picture, musical or comedy, and the final best drama award went to Alexander Payne's The Descendants.

In the TV realm, Lauren Dern scored a best actress upset for Enlightened over Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Zooey Deschanel. Julianne Moore and Rob Lowe overcame some technical difficulties to announce the miniseries or TV movie winners. Downton Abbey was crowned best miniseries after picking up an Emmy for the same category a couple months ago. Kate Winslet won for her turn in Mildred Pierce, and she showed some PDA with boyfriend Ned Rocknroll before taking the stage! Peter Dinklage won corresponding honors for Game of Thrones. Kelsey Grammer won best actor in a TV drama for his new series Boss, while another show in its first season, Homeland, picked up best drama. Claire Danes was a big winner as best actress in a TV drama for Homeland, and one of the evening's most surprising statues went to best actor in a TV comedy, Matt LeBlanc, for Episodes! Announcing the Winners of the Critics' Choice Awards!

It was a big night for The Help and an even bigger one for The Artist at the Critics' Choice Awards tonight. The Artist scored best picture and best director for Michel Hazanavicius, while Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis took home matching actress trophies for The Help (along with best acting ensemble). As for the men, George Clooney took home best leading actor for The Descendants, while Christopher Plummer was honored as best supporting actor for Beginners.
