Every week up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories, starting this week with cinematography. Yesterday, I had a gallery of stills from The Black Dahlia, and today's nominee is The Prestige.
Like The Black Dahlia, The Prestige benefits from Scarlett Johansson, whose classic beauty fits nicely in period films.

While The Black Dahlia was critically panned as a bit of a snooze-fest, director Brian DePalma clearly got something right in creating a classic film-noir atmosphere.

This Neil Burger-directed film—starring Edward Norton and Jessica Biel—isn't a masterpiece, but its visual mastery is entirely deserving of an Oscar nod, if not a win.

Every week up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories, starting this week with cinematography. Yesterday, I had a gallery of stills from Pan's Labyrinth, and today's nominee is Children of Men.
In this movie, director Alfonso Cuaron strove to capture a grim futuristic world in which the continuation of the human race is threatened.

Anne Hathaway joined Academy President Tom Sherak this morning in LA to announce the nominees for this year's Oscars. As expected, there was lots of love for Avatar — the film is up in a total of nine categories, as is The Hurt Locker, including Best Picture and Best Director nominations for both James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow. This is the first year with 10 films in the running for Best Picture, and The Blind Side scored a spot next to films like Up, Inglourious Basterds, and District 9.

The show is over and trophies have been handed out at the 2010 Critics' Choice Awards, but the night wasn't without its share of surprises. Avatar managed to run away with a record-breaking six wins (most in the technical categories), but it lost out in the two major spots of the night to a much smaller film — The Hurt Locker. Kathryn Bigelow's tale of a bomb squad unit in Iraq not only garnered her a Best Directing win, but the film also took home the biggest honor of the night, Best Picture.

Now that awards season is fully revving up, all sorts of nominations are coming out, e.g. the Independent Spirit Awards announcement two weeks ago or tomorrow's Golden Globes list. (Check in early for that, as I'll be posting all of the nods).
