Stephen Colbert Confronts Willie Nelson Over Ice Cream

Willie Nelson appeared on The Colbert Report last night to discuss his new Ben & Jerry's flavor, Country Peach Cobbler. Seeing as how Stephen just got his own Americone Dream ice cream, he used the interview as an opportunity to confront his celebrity-dessert competition.

In case you missed it, Comedy Central has posted two highly entertaining clips. The first has Colbert calling out Nelson's nefarious agenda with an attack ad, in which an "ice cream expert" (read: little kid) asks: "Why would I want to eat ice cream the pot man told me to eat? Pot people are high. They'll eat anything."

Not to be outdone by Stephen Colbert, Willie Nelson now has his own flavor of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, called Country Peach Cobbler. It sounds quite delicious and unlike any other Ben & Jerry's flavor I've tried: peach-flavored ice cream laced with cinnamon-sugar shortbread pieces. Plus, the packaging has Willie's face on it, which could provide hours of laughs. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Farm Aid.

You may have heard about the voluntary recall of 250,000 pints of Country Peach Cobbler, but no need to worry unless you are allergic to wheat. The ice cream is fine, but the packaging lacks an allergy warning. For details on how Ben & Jerry came up with the flavor,

In an interview with Ben & Jerry's spokesperson Sean Greenwood, Rolling Stone Rock & Roll Daily learned that the ice cream makers are far more likely to name a flavor after a musician with do-gooder tendencies. Though the article doesn't really explain whether Nelson approached Ben & Jerry's or vice versa, it does shed some light on the flavor selection:

Willie’s flavor took after the Southern style peach dessert because, according to Greenwood, “Willie is a downhome Texan Americana guy.” When they floated the peach idea by Mr. Nelson, his response was appropriately laid-back: “Groovy!” he reportedly drawled.

I'm going to see Willie Nelson during his five-night stint at the Fillmore in April, and you can bet I'll be picking up a pint or two of this stuff.

Ben & Jerry Do "The Colbert Report"

I know you're all excited about the launch of Americone Dream, the new Ben & Jerry's ice cream that combines two of our favorite things: Stephen Colbert and chocolate. But while I expected the usual hilarity when Ben & Jerry's co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield appeared on "The Colbert Report" last night, the interview was even funnier that I'd anticipated.

In case you missed it, we've got a video from the segment, where Stephen introduces his newly christened ice-cream flavor. Here's a taste:

"That's right nation: Now you can join me internally as well as externally. Every delicious bite is full of crispy fudge-covered waffle cone - the only time I waffle... Look at the packaging! That picture is so hot it's amazing the stuff stays frozen."

Ice Cream Moves Colbert Closer to World Domination

You might have heard by now that "The Colbert Report" star Stephen Colbert will be getting his own ice cream, courtesy of Ben & Jerry's. Now, I'm as excited as the next girl to dip into Americone Dream (vanilla ice cream, fudge-covered waffle cone pieces, caramel, and a dash of truthiness - "the sweet taste of liberty in your mouth," says the press release). But when my girl Yum and I were chatting about this, we wondered if Colbert maybe wasn't getting a little greedy. After all, he already has a hockey team, a bald eagle, and - oh, right! - a TV show.

On the other hand, is Colbert's potential for world domination really a bad thing? If he really wants to make his mark, maybe he could try to get his name on one of these:

An endowed chair at a major university (The Stephen Colbert Professor of Patriotism Studies, perhaps?)
A federal building
A planet
An element
A disease
A wild bear refuge

Jimmy Fallon Launches Late Night Snack With Ben and Jerry, Calls Colbert's Flavor "Ridiculous"

Jimmy Fallon could hardly contain his enthusiasm last night when he joined forces with Ben and Jerry of, well, Ben & Jerry's at NBC headquarters in NYC. The trio were finally able to announce a project they've long been working on - Jimmy's brand-new ice cream flavor called Late Night Snack! The dessert, which melds salty and sweet with fudge-covered potato chip clusters in vanilla bean ice cream with a caramel swirl, will be available nationwide this week.

The three men sat down for a short press conference, which included Jimmy chatting about their shared interest in fair trade products and explaining how the idea of a collaboration stemmed from his "Ladysmith Snack Mambazo" skit with The Roots. Jimmy even managed to start a good-natured rivalry over Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream. Jimmy said:

On the flavor being inspired by a Late Night skit: "This is why I say everyone should get their own talk show . . . We were just thinking about ideas, something about late night snack. What do you have when you watch our show? Is popcorn good? You can't have pizza. Pretzels - they kind of did that with Chubby Hubby. Then we were like, potato chips!"
On donating the profits to fair trade organizations: "Two of the main ingredients are fair trade - and I was like, I've heard of fair trade, but I don't know what it is really, but I know it's fair . . . the cocoa from the fudge on the potato chip is fair trade and the vanilla bean in the vanilla ice cream is fair trade . . . it just gives farmers in developing countries a fair shot to make a living off farming. It's a fair price. It's just a great thing. I was just so psyched that was part of the deal. [Ben & Jerry's] said you get a percentage of this, you and NBC can split it. And I was like, all right! Then they said, 'Or you can donate it to charity.' So it went to Fair Trade Universities, which goes around to college campuses and teaches kids about fair trade."
On how his flavor stacks up to Stephen Colbert's: "Stephen Colbert is a jealous son-of-a-b*tch. I wish I never see his ice cream next to mine. In fact, I asked to be separated from his ice cream flavor. Americone Dream? Oh my gosh - ice cream cones in ice cream? What a genius idea! He's Albert Einstein! Whatever. I don't want to even discuss it . . . I'd rather not besmirch the name of Late Night Snack by bringing up Stephen Colbert's ridiculous ice cream."

Today in honor of Ben & Jerry's 33rd year in business, the ice cream company will be giving away gratis ice cream cones at participating shops across the nation. Pop in between the hours of 12 noon and 8 p.m. and snag a scoop that's entirely free!

We can't wait to see how Jimmy Fallon's potato chip-and-fudge-filled Late Night Snack stacks up to Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream. Then there are Ben & Jerry's other brand-new flavors, too, like the music- and arts-inspired Bonnaroo Buzz, and Clusterfluff, a swirl of marshmallow, caramel, and peanut butter.

Taste Test: Ben & Jerry's New Ice Creams For Target

I'll never need more reasons to go for a shopping trip to Target. Nonetheless, I've just been provided with one: a crop of new Ben & Jerry's flavors. The ice cream company has added two more options to its exclusive line, available at the retail store: Volun-Tiramisu and Peanut Butter World. Both are intended to promote volunteerism, and both sound astoundingly delicious.

Peanut Butter World is described as a "milk chocolate ice cream with peanut buttery swirls and chocolate cookie swirls." Imagine a rich chocolate ice cream with two circular chocolate pieces from an Oreo cookie and swirls of gooey peanut butter.

Tasters disagreed on the ratio of chocolate to peanut butter. "Good balance of both," one commented, while another suggested, "It's really chocolate ice cream with equal parts cookie and peanut butter, so I think the name is misleading." I enjoyed the dense, cocoa-like flavor of the ice cream, which seemed more dark chocolate than milk to me. Get the rest of the new flavor scoop when you read more.

What do Ben & Jerry's fans and Saturday Night Live viewers have in common? They both love Schweddy Balls.

With the holidays fast approaching, Ben & Jerry's wants you to get up close and personal with its latest flavor, Schweddy Balls, based on Alec Baldwin and Molly Shannon's famously punny SNL Christmastime skit. The creamery starts with vanilla ice cream, which is infused with rum and "loaded" with fudge covered rum and malt balls.

Hopefully, Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls are here to stay for your pleasure. I can't wait to taste test this new creation. Will you be able to resist?
