For The 27th Time, Anne is NOT A Princess

Anne Hathaway stopped by TRL earlier this week to promote her new movie Becoming Jane. She looked beautiful at the NY premiere of the movie, but we're loving her casual look and toned down makeup here. Lately Anne has been very vocal about how different she is from her Disney Princess image, and apparently stepping out of her squeaky clean persona won her the role of Jane Austen. She said,

"The night before my audition, my dog decided to eat the hotel slipper, so she was up the whole night vomiting. I slept maybe an hour. When I arrived at the interview, I was tired and wasn't in a very good mood. I guess Julian realized that I wasn't the bright, happy, smiley, untroubled girl from 'The Princess Diaries.' He offered me the role after that."

Anne may not want us to think she's a good girl but as long as she isn't getting arrested or looking wasted we'll just keep liking her and thinking she is that princess like star. Buzz only felt mediocre about the movie, check out her full review here to see why.

Becoming Jane: Read a Book Instead

In Becoming Jane, the filmmakers purport that a possible love affair Jane Austen may or may not have had with roguish Irish lawyer Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy) was the fodder for all of Austen's love-fueled novels. Weaving together fact and fiction (along with bits of Austen's well-known works), the movie is at best an adequate romantic drama of star-crossed lovers, presumably presenting the reasoning behind why Austen indulged her characters and gave them "all they desired." At worst, it's watching Anne Hathaway give a surprisingly and disappointingly charmless, humorless performance as one of the world's most beloved authors.

One of several children in a family of modest means, Austen grew up at a time when the wise, diligent thing for young ladies to do was to marry into a wealthy man's family, relieving her own family of the burden of one more mouth to feed. Becoming Jane puts forth the love affair Austen enjoyed with Tom McFroy as her one opportunity to marry for love, though other marriage proposals that don't interest young Jane also come her way. The story is basically about the "for love or money" conundrum, and it is visually interesting - the chilly, milk-white English atmosphere lending a kind of sad beauty to it all. Yet playing the central character, Anne Hathaway falls flat as Jane Austen, commanding little authority and making Austen seem like quite the bland character. To find out more about why,

Despite Austen's famed wit, there is nary a sparkle in Hathaway's eye, her performance so dull one wonders if anybody would care about this story in the least if her character's name were not Jane Austen. I found myself desperately wishing someone else had played the role - particularly someone who is actually British or could at least achieve the accent more successfully than Hathaway could, as her accent is irritatingly spotty. Emily Mortimer could have been a welcome replacement, for example.

The best part of the whole thing is James McAvoy playing Tom Lefroy: skinny, one might say twirpish, but with an intensely mesmerizing gaze. Boyish, but fearless, daring, and quite sexy. As the object of Austen's affections, he's challenging and exciting. However, again, the way Hathaway portrays Austen, it's difficult to see what would be attractive about her to Lefroy. I'd hoped the film would have charmed me as much as Austen's writing does, but to my dismay I found myself wishing I'd spent the two hours with one of her novels rather than watching Becoming Jane.

This upcoming weekend will be very exciting at movie theaters. Out of the following movies opening this Friday August 3, which are you most interested to see? Is it Hot Rod with the funny and charmingly tousled Andy Samberg? Or Becoming Jane starring Anne Hathaway? Perhaps it's El Cantante with Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, or David Wain and Ken Marino's The Ten? Or maybe you'll go for younger fare with the Bratz movie, or Underdog? Of course, this could all be meaningless, seeing as The Bourne Ultimatum opens this weekend, too.

Beautiful Anne For Becoming Jane

Anne Hathaway looked beautiful in a simple LWD on the arm of her boyfriend Raffaello Folleri for a screening of Becoming Jane in East Hampton this weekend. Howard Stern, his fiancée Beth Ostrosky and Heather Graham stepped out as well in their best summer looks. Anne has been all about town lately promoting the Jane Austen film and supporting her fashion loving friends. We're getting excited to catch the classic film in theaters August 3rd! Anne Dishes On Jane and Lindsay

Anne Hathaway looked stunning at the premiere of her new movie Becoming Jane in NYC last night. In the film, Anne plays Jane Austen during a turning point in Jane's romantic life and writing career. At the premiere, Anne talked about one of her contemporaries who is at a turning point as well. She had this to say about Lindsay Lohan, "I actually think that it has nothing to do with temptation. When you're talking about addiction, you're talking about disease." It sounds like she is on the same page as LL's lawyer. As for the movie at hand, Anne had this to say about playing the role of the literary icon:

"I inherited the image of Jane Austen as a sort of a dried-out old spinster. And in doing my research I found she was anything but that. She was wonderfully alive, very fun, a bit naughty and so much, so much more alive than I'd ever thought. And so it was wonderful, the idea of playing the woman before the icon."

Movie Preview: Becoming Jane

In Becoming Jane, Anne Hathaway plays the great Jane Austen during a time in her life that may have influenced the romances in Austen's novels. It's speculated that Austen had some kind of romantic relationship with Irish lawyer Tom Lefroy (played by the adorable James McAvoy in the movie), though ultimately Lefroy married someone else and Austen remained single for the rest of her life. Becoming Jane brings together fact and fiction to imagine what this romance may have been like, while also making allusions to Austen's work. I'm anxious to find out how Hathaway does playing someone so famous and so beloved, so I'll surely be seeing this when it opens next Friday August 3. To watch the trailer,

9 Love Lessons I've Learned In 10 Years Of Marriage

As much as we all want to believe that once we find our true love, we'll live out our lives in blissful happiness, reveling in that loving feeling forever, reality is not quite like that. We tend to think that love is something that happens to us, instead of something that comes from us. The truth is that successful relationships take energy, effort and attention from both partners.

This year, I'll be celebrating my tenth anniversary with my husband, and while that's certainly not a record-breaking accomplishment, there are a few things I've learned along the way regarding keeping a relationship healthy, or at least from falling apart at the seams. Here they are:

Touch him. As human beings we all crave being touched. It gives us that sense of being connected to others, that sense of bonding. I'm not necessarily talking about sexual touching, but things like simply touching his forearm when you're talking to him, running your fingers gently through his hair or rubbing his ears lightly when you kiss him goodbye. A little bit of touch goes a long way, and in these hurried modern times, we can all use more than we're getting.
Compliment him. We're all naturally quick to point out our partner's flaws or things they did wrong or could do better, but why is it so hard to comment on what's great about him? Once we get used to each other, the great things become expected and taken for granted. Pick three things that he does really well, and the next time you see him doing one of them, give him a nice little compliment like, "You're so good at that, thank you for taking care of that for us." If you aim to give him one compliment every day it will begin to become natural and soon you'll find yourself doing it even more often. And you'll also find his annoying habits won't seem so bad.
Keep your dirty laundry in your house. If he's done something that really bothers you, and you feel the need to complain to your friends, co-workers, or your mom, bite your tongue as hard as you can. Words spoken in one ear have a tendency to make it to other ears very quickly, and these people will think less of your guy long after you've gotten over it. Mom and Dad are particularly good at holding grudges against the guy that hurt their daughter. If you need to complain, write it down in a journal instead of voicing it, or if you absolutely have to voice it to someone, tell it to your therapist or a relationship coach.
Be a winning team. Look at life's ups and downs as something that you're both in together. If you work together as a team, always looking out for the other, you'll be able to handle whatever comes at you. Just as the various members of a team have different talents, you and your partner have unique talents, so put them to work together to create greatness.
Take him at face value. Know that he is what he is and also know that he's not going to change. Then love him for what he is. Instead of looking at his bad habits as annoying, look at them as quirky traits that make him such a loveable guy. Write down three things that you absolutely love about him on an index card and keep it in your pocket at all times. Any time he annoys you, pull out the card and read each to yourself; you won't be able to stay mad. (If you can't come up with three things that you love about him then dump him and move on. I mean, seriously.)

LSD in the 1960s

Neurotic Roger Sterling finds truth on this week's episode of Mad Men with the help of LSD. Thanks to his experimental much younger wife, Jane, Roger reluctantly attends a dinner party, which becomes much more interesting once acid comes into the mix.

As expected, this season of Mad Men is full of historical references from 1966. If you paid close attention to Roger's one-liners, you may have heard him say, "Well, Dr. Leary I find your product boring," after his early reaction to LSD leaves him less than entertained. Roger, who eventually comes around to the drug during his trip, wasn't talking about Jane's professor friend hosting the party. Dr. Timothy Leary was a Harvard psychologist who founded the League for Spiritual Discovery (LSD) in 1966. The holy sacrament of the religion was LSD, and Leary hoped to get it legalized under freedom of religion. As an ad man like Roger Sterling could appreciate, Dr. Leary was the face of the LSD brand, and his one-liner "turn on, tune in, drop out" was meant to work like an advertising slogan.

Before the counterculture of the 1960s, LSD captured the interest of the US government. The CIA conducted experiments, hoping it could leverage the drug for mind control or chemical warfare. Also beginning in the 1950s and gaining popularity during the '60s, psychotherapists used it as a way to get to a patient's subconscious. By 1967, the Beatles had released "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Although John Lennon denied the title was a reference to the psychedelic drug, the BBC banned the song.
