TV Tonight: "Beauty and the Geek"

As reality dating shows go, "Beauty and the Geek" has always been one of the sweeter ones. But I still wouldn't give it too much thought if not for a special new twist this year: One geeky girl and one jock guy will be introduced into the house to shake things up. Thank goodness - finally, a smart chick on one of these things! (The CW, by the way, doesn't want us to see their faces till tonight's premiere - that's them blurred out there on the right.) Maybe someday we'll get a dating show with all smart girls and hottie guys, but until then, I suppose I can settle for this small nod to the brainy gals among us.

Also on tap for this season, which starts with a special two-hour episode: the beauties teaching third grade, the geeks performing an autobiographical rap in a crowded club, and - of course - the contest for Prom King. The CW Dishes on New Reality Shows and More

It's The CW"s turn at the TCA press tour today, with panel discussions with the casts of each of the CW's new shows. Network Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff took the stage this morning to chat about what's coming up for the network, which is entering its second year. Here were a few of the highlights:

The two-hour "Beauty and the Geek" premiere will kick off the CW's season on Sept. 18, and this time around, there's a twist: One geeky girl and one hot guy will also be in the running. "The experiment has evolved," the promo voiceover intoned, getting a chuckle from the crowd.
Remember "Crowned," the mother-daughter beauty pageant? It's on. Oh boy, is it on. We watched a promo for the eight-episode reality show that toed the line between hilarious and horrifying, with one daughter crowing about how she and her mom are the thinnest team in the competition and another saying she'd do a mother-daughter pose if Hugh Hefner came calling. The campy, over-the-top elements include a "desashing" ceremony, where the losing teams have their team sashes cut off with bedazzled scissors, and Carson Kressley.
A few remarks on some of the CW's recent cancellations: Ostroff said she has no regrets about "Veronica Mars," saying "I feel like we gave 'Veronica Mars' every chance." The "Gilmore Girls" situation was portrayed as a collaborative decision where neither the network nor the show's stars wanted to see the show come back for another season and have the ratings slip again. And "Hidden Palms" was originally seen as an eight-episode miniseries that the network could have ordered more of had it caught on - which, obviously, it did not.

More bits, including "One Tree Hill" and "Gossip Girl," so

Asia, the "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" winner, has decided to do a solo career instead. Heh. For this season, the show will be searching for members of a new girl group called Girlilicious, apparently bringing a whole legion of new Dolls into the world.
Like NBC, the CW is also planning to do green themes in all of its programs this season. Apparently, the "Everybody Hates Chris" episode will be called "Everybody Hates Earth Day."
"One Tree Hill" has a full-season order at this point, and the network sees the four-year jump in timeline as a way to get the characters out of college, where story lines can be stagnant and dull.
"Gossip Girl" is going to be getting its own online alternate universe, with the ability to shop in the characters' stores and go to their parties (and, apparently, do some really awkward digital dancing).
Remember "Farmer Wants a Wife," the dating show the network announced in the spring where urban women will compete for the affections of one tractor-driving country guy? It's going forward and has apparently already been cast. Someone asked how many farmers they talked to. Ostroff: "I saw quite a few farmers." Hee.
The CW is very proud of itself for being the youngest of all the broadcast networks, with a median age of 32. They have an executive whose sole job is to track trends among the target 18-34 demographic. In between sessions, they're explaining some of those trends on the big screen, among them Twittering, Female Fantasy Leagues, and Moo Cards. Moo Cards?

Ashton's Beauty and the Geek is Back

Looks like Ashton's show Beauty and the Geek has survived the WB/UPN merger, the CW. The network is bringing back the reality show in the new year! Ashton and his partner from Punk'd, Jason Goldberg, have created a goofy yet entertaining show pairing up eight beautiful but academically impaired women with eight nerdy brainiacs to test their intellect and social skills and to wait for love to ensue. You'd think that Ashton would be really excited about the whole thing. So why is he hiding from the cameras? Doesn't he know that when you go to places like Orzo there are always paparazzi there?

As a New Yorker staff writer, author of nonfiction books on subjects ranging from Rin Tin Tin to orchids, and woman with an all-around awesome job, Susan Orlean spends a lot of time alone writing from home on her latest reporting venture. So when she wanted to find all the camaraderie of an office no matter where her travels took her, guess where she turned for comfort . . . Twitter.

In an event at this year's Macworld in San Francisco, Susan explained that Twitter changed the way she worked, thanks to conversations with strangers, and helped to solidify her place with the geeks. Here's more of what we learned from our favorite tech-obsessed writer, including how to work efficiently with technology and deal when a loved one won't convert to your favorite gadget brand.

Keep the analog - Though Susan was speaking from her perspective as a writer, her tip to always keep a little part of your work in the offline, analog world can apply to so many other fields. It's a reminder to rely on our wits in the face of fast information. Don't Google every question that pops up, go out into the real world and discover the answer for yourself.
Don't skip the human part - Twitter serves as a natural extension of friendships, but it certainly doesn't replace the subtle nuances that occur in face-to-face interaction. Keep your curiosity (and relationships!) intact by picking up the phone or meeting for a coffee chat.
Download Evernote! - When asked about her favorite app, Susan emphatically responded, "Evernote." Its functionality across desktop, browser, phone, and tablet platforms lets you stay productive from anywhere and never forget the digital content that matters.
A united tech household is key - As someone that's "hopelessly obsessed with new gadgets," Susan understandably is an Apple evangelist, a brand known for its enthusiastic early adopters. The new products and industrial design beauty only goes so far, though, when half of the house is living in a different world - a PC world. After coping with a home office filled with piles of cords and multiple printers for the different operating systems, Susan half-jokingly finally convinced her husband to switch to Apple products when she simply stopped packing the bulky cords for his PC. Now they live in OS harmony.

8 Life Lessons Learned From CES 2012

This year's CES didn't just teach us about gadget trends and the future of the industry - it also taught us a few things that we'll remember in our everyday lives as well. Here, we offer up a few tips to take with you on your next journey to a big tech conference, or to keep in the back of your mind for life. Trust me: our pain is your gain!

Get plenty of sleep. Between long hours on the show floor and various industry parties (and afterparties), there's a good reason we'd love to see siesta lounges at CES. But if you can't nap during the day, be sure to get enough shut eye at night. This is true even for the real world, where you've got emails, shows, and news to catch up on. Put away the laptop at a decent hour and get your beauty rest. You'll wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day's to-do list.
Carry water. Downing coffee, cocktails, and Diet Cokes, coupled with the dry weather in the desert, and filtered air in the hotels and casinos can cause dehydration fast. Keep a bottle of water on you at all times. This not only keeps your skin fresh, lips hydrated, and head clear, but it'll keep you from overheating due to thirst.
Wear good shoes. Did I mention how much we walked at CES? Seriously, the biggest expo I've ever seen, it spans the Las Vegas Convention Center and surrounding hotels. It's not hard to walk six miles in a single day. Multiply that by three or four days, and you've got yourself a good workout. Dress your feet appropriately for CES, and everyday life, since it can save your back later down the road.
Get in the lunch line early. Hungry bloggers line up to get their lunches far before the 11:30 a.m. call time. Although we never saw a shortage of food, who wants to wait in another line when you're tired and hungry? This is another way to say "eat your lunch." Skipping meals can lead to headaches and crankiness, symptoms you don't want to experience when you're in a fast-paced and crowded space or in your office.
