Max Payne: Awesome Style, Not Much Else

In its own haunting way, Max Payne is beautiful to watch. I knew that director John Moore had utilized some new digital technology while filming, but I didn't quite expect the movie as a whole to be so visually mesmerizing. This world never strays from its grainy state, everything awash in a blue-gray sheen - except for striking spots of bright red, and sometimes twinkly orange sparks - and there is near-constant precipitation usually large snowflakes swirling through icy air.

In other aspects (you know, the actual story and stuff), there's not too much to chat about. The story is fairly simplistic and the visual symbolism of this sad, dark world is obvious (in his memories of his past life, the world is bright and lovely, his miserable present-day life is only cold darkness). This isn't a subtle film by any means. But while there's plenty of violence and gunfire, somehow it doesn't seem to be fetishizing it. There's a greater goal to be met, and violence is par for the course in reaching this goal. To see why else I kinda liked this movie,

Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg) has been searching for his wife's murderers for three years, and one night he meets the sexy Natasha (Olga Kurylenko) who leads him into a sinister world of drugs which provides more clues toward solving the mystery. Max even starts sniffing around the company where his wife worked alongside a kindly older friend of Max's family, BB Hensley (Beau Bridges). Before long, Natasha winds up dead with certain details linking her death to Max's wife's, and Natasha's sister Mona (Mila Kunis) joins Max in his hunt for answers and revenge.

Mark Wahlberg is tasked with playing what he does quite well: a hot-headed, broody guy with not too many lines. Mila Kunis plays the badass chick convincingly, and Ludacris is more or less OK in his role as a tough guy detective with some sassy one-liners (though I'm wary of seeing him take on meatier roles). No real acting chops are required for this movie (the acting's not really central to the film's success), though Beau Bridges puts his all into it anyway, and comes out the best of the bunch. He's got that fatherly businessman-with-shady-secrets thing down pat. We see Marky Mark the most in the movie, but it was Bridges's performance that I kept thinking about.

I might've liked the ending more if they hadn't taken such pains to ensure there will be a sequel. I understand the urge to do that (studios love nothing more than an endless number of unnecessary sequels), but it seems like a lame move here. It also felt like the movie ended a few times before it finally ended. Still, the journey getting there is captivating from start to finish, and extremely cool to watch.

First Look: Single With Parents Starring Alyssa Milano

Like Castle, Alyssa Milano's Single With Parents is another of ABC's growing roster of midseason shows. This one stars Milano as Lou, a single woman in her 30s who finds herself being the dumping ground for her parents' wild behavior and irresponsibility. They seem to be the ones off living fabulous lives while she stays behind to watch after their kids or hears their stories about having sex in a helicopter.

There have been a lot of young-slackers-behaving-badly comedies over the past few years, so it's kind of refreshing to have a show in the mix where the adults are the ones acting silly. And if I were going to choose people to play parents living life with reckless abandon, I could do a whole lot worse than Beau Bridges and Annie Potts. The trailer didn't exactly win me over, though, and it felt way longer than its 100 seconds, which can't be a good thing.

Movie Preview: Max Payne

The trailer for the video game-turned-movie Max Payne looks dark and spooky, though the story doesn't seem particularly new. According to the plot description, Mark Wahlberg's character, Max Payne, is looking to avenge the deaths of his family members. Mila Kunis costars as an assassin who is also looking to avenge a loved one's death (her sister's). Lots of avenging going on.

Ludacris and Chris O'Donnell also star. Additionally, there is a giant bird.

Shia & Zooey Take Their Unusual Names To The Blue Carpet

Two of our favorite rising stars, Shia LaBeouf and Zooey Deschanel, hit the blue carpet this weekend to premiere their new animated movie Surf's Up. In the film, they lend their voices to two penguins headed to the annual World Surfing Penguin Championship. Sounds pretty cute, but we're more excited about Shia and Zooey getting more projects and more exposure lately. As much as we enjoy writing about the tabloid fixtures, we love having new faces to write about - especially ones with so much talent.

The Good German Premieres in LA

George, Cate and Tobey all came out for the premiere of The Good German last night in LA. The film, which was shot all in black and white, is said to be inspired by the movie Casablanca. Cate wore quite a dress to the showing but the only thing that seemed to be on George's mind was Max, his pet pig who died over the weekend. He's so broken up about Max's death that he got teary eyed when he was asked how he was doing, Clooney said:

"I'm good. I just got home this morning, or this afternoon, so it's strange not having him sitting on the carpet in the house, but, you know… sad, actually.

Recalling his best memory of Max, who was often featured in interviews with Clooney (who referred to him as "Max, the star"), the two-legged star said, "Oh, there are plenty of them. He got me in a lot of trouble that pig, in general, (and) scared the hell out of a lot of delivery people, too."

Ben Affleck, Anne Hathaway, George Clooney, and More Take Hollywood Film Awards Stage

The Hollywood Film Awards took place last night at LA's Beverly Hilton Hotel, and once the famous guests like George Clooney and Stacy Keibler left the red carpet, the show began inside the ballroom. George was onstage to accept his Hollywood Actor Award from his Descendants costar, Beau Bridges, and humbly told the audience of his award, "I am very lucky. I'm a lucky man." My Week With Marilyn star Michelle Williams, meanwhile, won the female counterpart with the Hollywood Actress Award. Ben Affleck, sporting his long Argo locks, made a special appearance to honor Hollywood Cinematographer Award recipient Emmanuel Lubezki. The men worked together on Terrence Malick's still-untitled upcoming picture.

The many ladies of The Help, including Emma Stone, Allison Janney, Viola Davis, Cicely Tyson, Ahna O'Reilly, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Mary Steenburgen were together to accept the Hollywood Ensemble Award and to pose with their new statues backstage. Further nods went to Diablo Cody with the Hollywood Screenwriter Award, Moneyball's Bennett Miller with the Hollywood Director Award, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt with the Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award. Joseph was handed his prize by his Dark Knight Rises costar Anne Hathaway, who was decked out in a floral Erdem dress.

George and Stacy Arrive Together For Michelle Williams's Big Hollywood Night

George Clooney had lady friend Stacy Keibler on his arm last night to attend the 15th annual Hollywood Film Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The couple are fresh off a stint in Europe, where Stacy joined George for the Paris premiere of The Ides of March and a London screening of The Descendants. She represented her favorite football team with her purple Maria Lucia Hohan gown. Stacy tweeted, "Wearing my Ravens purple to the Hollywood Film Awards. . . Will have to keep checking the score on my phone." This was another big evening for George, who accepted the Hollywood Actor Award from his Descendants costar Beau Bridges.

Many more of George's fellow actors were honored, including Michelle Williams, who looked gorgeous in a black strapless Nina Ricci number. Michelle Williams accepted the Hollywood Actress Award once the show began, and later met up with her best friend Busy Philipps. However, Michelle was solo on the red carpet, and we caught a minute with her. She flew to California from the Michigan set of Oz: The Great and Powerful, and her daughter Matilda has been there to see the filming. Michelle said of the kid-friendly picture, "This one's for Matilda." Michelle shared room on the press line with other lovely ladies like a Pucci-clad Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Emma Stone in Jonathan Saunders, and Carey Mulligan in Bottega Veneta. Announcing the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominees!

TV stars Joshua Jackson and Melissa McCarthy were up and at 'em this morning to present the nominees for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards - one of which went to McCarthy herself for her work on Mike and Molly. There aren't too many shockers on this year's list; new shows Game of Thrones, The Killing, and Boardwalk Empire all got some love, Modern Family continues to dominate (now with a nomination for Ed O'Neill), and Friday Night Lights finally got that much-deserved nod for outstanding drama series. There are also some big names you may not have expected to see on this list, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, and Justin Timberlake all picked up nominations for guest appearances.
