In its own haunting way, Max Payne is beautiful to watch. I knew that director John Moore had utilized some new digital technology while filming, but I didn't quite expect the movie as a whole to be so visually mesmerizing. This world never strays from its grainy state, everything awash in a blue-gray sheen — except for striking spots of bright red, and sometimes twinkly orange sparks — and there is near-constant precipitation usually large snowflakes swirling through icy air.

Like Castle, Alyssa Milano's Single With Parents is another of ABC's growing roster of midseason shows. This one stars Milano as Lou, a single woman in her 30s who finds herself being the dumping ground for her parents' wild behavior and irresponsibility. They seem to be the ones off living fabulous lives while she stays behind to watch after their kids or hears their stories about having sex in a helicopter.

The trailer for the video game-turned-movie Max Payne looks dark and spooky, though the story doesn't seem particularly new. According to the plot description, Mark Wahlberg's character, Max Payne, is looking to avenge the deaths of his family members. Mila Kunis costars as an assassin who is also looking to avenge a loved one's death (her sister's).

I've gone on about the Emmy nominees in the dramatic categories, now I've gotta share my reactions to the comedic nominees. There's so much to talk about with these categories! I have to say I was rather surprised by several of the nominations — in both good and bad ways.

This morning Chandra Wilson and The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons rather adorably announced the major category nominees for the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards. It's a curious batch this year, with many of the categories containing more nominees than usual.
The 30 Rock appreciation continues, and has even increased, with a 30 Rock nomination in each of the comedy acting fields (and two in the Supporting Actor category — go Jack McBrayer!).

Instead of Mary Alice this week, we have guest dead voice Edie narrating from the grave on Desperate Housewives. The episode follows Lynette, Gaby, Susan, Bree and Mrs. McCluskey as they drive four hours each way to deliver Edie's ashes to her son, Travers. Along the way, they reminisce about Edie, eternal frenemy.

This week's episode of Desperate Housewives features Beau Bridges as basically our steward in a series of flashbacks to the beginning of the series — and even before. Bridges plays the liveliest, most involved, understanding and talkative handyman that ever lived, Eli Scruggs, who touches each of the women's lives in one way or another. He helps Gaby get over herself and befriend her new suburban neighbors and he helps nudge Bree toward finally writing her cookbook.

Tonight will mark the 100th episode of Desperate Housewives with the stories taking a nostalgic look back in time to the show's beginnings — and even before then. Here's more:
In Sunday's episode, flashbacks — new scenes, not clips — go back even before the pilot to show how each woman developed as she did. Handyman Eli Scruggs (Beau Bridges) "is brilliantly woven through the tale of each of our lives," [Nicolette] Sheridan says.
