Barenaked Ladies Singer Busted for Drugs, But I Love Their CD

As a longtime Barenaked Ladies fan, I was excited at the chance to review their kiddie CD, SNACKTIME, a couple months ago. My son and daughter have been enjoying songs like "Raisins," "Snacktime" and "789" while riding in the car. Then Steven Page, 38, the band's singer-guitarist was arrested in New York. He was charged with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance for cocaine and plead not guilty. Now the band has ducked out of Disney's Music Block Party tour, a family concert series. The Barenaked Ladies posted a statement on their website. It read:

Barenaked Ladies Manager Terry McBride announced today that the band has chosen to cancel its appearances at the Disney Music Block Party planned for late August in Long Island. “Members of the band completely support Steven Page,” said McBride, “but we don’t want to put Disney in an awkward position before issues involving Steven’s arrest are resolved.”

While the House of Mouse and advertising sponsors might feel awkward about aligning themselves with the band, as a mom I'm gonna keep playing their tunes. If I stood on a soapbox and tossed their CD out on principle, I'd have to stop listening to quite a bit of music. And in saying no to artists with drug associations, I'd also have to keep my kids from visiting museums. What's your opinion?

The Barenaked Ladies are now focused on babe. After twenty years together, the alternative rock band known for songs like "It's Been One Week," "Pinch Me" and "If I had a Million Dollars" that are popular with parents, now seeks an audience who prefer sippy cups. It was the band's own offspring that served as the inspiration behind their latest collection of 24 original tracks for children and anyone else interested in listening. Their website said:

"Our collective kids now outnumber the band more than 2 to 1," explains vocalist/guitarist Ed Robertson. "We set out to make a record that would be entertaining for them…not strictly a children's record, but a record that children would really enjoy. Our kids are in to all kinds of music.

Covering everything from hand-me-downs to allergies to food preferences and bad days in the same humorous vein that the Barenaked Ladies are famous for, SNACKTIME is full of fun family tunes including "Raisins" and "Louis Loon."

What to Download: New Music on iTunes

Tuesdays are big in entertainment-ville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes. So starting today, I'll be taking a spin through each week's iTunes music releases and picking out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. Some inaugural selections:

Calling all cool cats: The Last Shadow Puppets is a side project band of Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane from The Rascals. Their album is smooth and reminded one iTunes commenter of James Bond, which I think is right on. Their album topped British charts and I personally will be downloading the entire thing.

Elvis! No, the other Elvis.: Elvis Costello and the Imposters have a new album out called Momofuku, and it's already a hit with his fans and critics alike. Check out the single No Hiding Place if you want a taste of why people love the guy.

The guy who sang that One Tree Hill song: Gavin DeGraw is back with a self-titled album full of songs in the same style that made him somewhat of a hit-maker a couple of years ago. His sound falls somewhere between easy listening and contemporary rock, and if you're looking for something mellow, this new album's for you.

For the kids: We knew the Barenaked Ladies were really good at making cute and fun pop songs for adults. Now they're doing it for the kids on their new album, Snacktime. The song about ninjas is hands down my favorite, and even though I'm childless, I might not be above listening to these tunes myself!

Do you feel the need for speed?: I bet you thought the musical score for the Speed Racer movie was going to be an over-produced, techno-sounding mash with lots of "toot toot"s in there, didn't you? I sure did. To my surprise, the theme song for the movie is a swinging tune with a brass section to boot. I think it would be right at home on a cocktail party mix CD. Check it out here.
