Young Talent and Legends Honored at the CMT Awards

The 2007 CMT Awards are country music's version of the MTV Video Music Awards: The winners are chosen by fans, and the ceremony is more about the spectacle than the actual winners. At last night's awards ceremony, hosted by Jeff Foxworthy and held in Nashville, Carrie Underwood beat out the Dixie Chicks to win Video of the Year, and the "American Idol" winner also took home the award for Best Female Video. I was probably most excited to see legendary singer and songwriter Kris Kristofferson on stage to accept the Johnny Cash Visionary Award.

The show also included performances from big Nashville names - including Hank Williams Jr. and Martina McBride - as well as one very non-Nashville name: Bon Jovi. 2007 Kids Choice Awards: Who the Kids Chose

I remember when the Kids Choice Awards debuted in 1987, but Nickelodeon's big event is still going strong with the green slime. This year's awards were held Saturday night in Los Angeles and hosted by Justin Timberlake, proving that the KCAs are without a doubt a major Hollywood happening.

The show is also becoming a valuable place for actors to promote summer kids' movies. As TMNT and Harry Potter have proven, we should never underestimate the buying power of tweens and teens. (Just look at "American Idol.") Nominees included everyone from the expected (Christina Aguilera) to the hilarious (Charlie Sheen - you know, because he's so wholesome). Awards Season Marches On: the NAACP Image Awards

The Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the Grammys have been doled out to the most deserving talent, but the awards show season isn't over yet. On Friday night, the stars gathered in Los Angeles for the 38th Annual NAACP Image Awards, which honor artists, particularly those of color, across movies, TV, and music.

Many of this year's honorees are well-awarded already, including Jennifer Hudson, "Ugly Betty," and Mary J. Blige. But there were also some pleasant surprises, like The Pursuit of Happyness winning Best Picture, Prince being named Best Male Artist, and Spike Lee being recognized for his excellent Katrina documentary on HBO. NME Shockwaves Awards Get Creative

The Shockwave Awards, chosen by readers of the excellent British music mag NME, are like a cross between the Grammys and the MTV Movie Awards. There are all of the usual categories, like Best New Band and Best Album, plus some completely wacky ones, including Worst Band and Worst Dressed, which makes them more fun than our stodgy Grammys.

More than anything, of course, the Shockwaves are a place to see and be seen. This year's ceremony, held Thursday in London, was attended by hipsters galore: Jarvis Cocker and the Gossip's Beth Ditto, Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, Franz Ferdinand, and the Killers, who won for Best Video. The "Best" of the Worst: The Razzie Awards

While you were all-consumed by the Oscars (here's a full list of winners) the always delightful Razzie Awards for bad movies were handed out on Saturday night. Some of the winners were totally predictable: I mean, not since Helen Mirren at the Oscars has an actress had a win locked up as much as Sharon Stone did for Basic Instinct 2. But there were also some big surprises, like Carmen Electra winning for Scary Movie 4 - after all, I didn't even know there was a Scary Movie 4.

Sadly, no one showed up to accept his or her Golden Raspberry this year, like Halle Berry did for Catwoman, but that doesn't make me love the awards any less. To see a full list of Razzie winners, read more

All About the Oscars: My Rants and Raves

Were last night's Oscars some of the best in years or what? Not only were the winners a mix of deserving and surprising, but the ceremony was also one of the most entertaining - if still overlong - I've seen in a while. You can read my insta-commentary from last night, or if you prefer a more reflective look at the awards, here's a recap of some of the biggest shocker and more entertainment moments. Biggest Surprises

After all the pre-Oscar hype, Babel won nothing but Best Score.
The on-stage banter was actually funny.
Happy Feet beat Cars, proving that the Academy likes penguins even more than it likes Pixar.
The Lives of Others took home the award for Best Foreign Film, renewing my hope that the Oscars aren’t just a popularity contest.
A good Melissa Etheridge number beat out all three of Dreamgirls' shameless attempts to score a Best Song Oscar.

Pop Rocks at the Brit Awards

Aside from that whole Spice Girls thing, I continue to be impressed by the Brits' impeccable taste in pop music. I mean, can you imagine the The Artic Monkeys winning a Grammy? We Love the Writers Guild Awards

As a writer, I feel particularly passionate about Hollywood writing awards, and yesterday's 2007 Writers Guild Awards ceremony suggests that one of my favorite scripts this year, Little Miss Sunshine, might really be the little movie that could when it comes to screenwriting nods at the Oscars.
