What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the titles below, family-friendly flicks Bee Movie and August Rush are available as well.

No Country for Old Men
If you haven't heard about No Country for Old Men, the staggering, Oscar-winning adaptation of Cormic McCarthy's novel, you might well be living under a rock. Not for those looking for warm fuzzies, this is the Coen Brothers at their best: entertaining, dark, and thought-provoking. Javier Bardem (um, how scary is he on that DVD cover?) won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Anton Chigurh, a demented serial killer whose evilness will haunt you for days. The film also stars Josh Brolin as a man on the run from Chigurh and Tommy Lee Jones a local sheriff on both of their trails.

Though the film's ending is obscure and has left many scratching their heads, I really thought it worked and I was completely entranced by the suspenseful cat-and-mouse plot. If you haven't yet seen this darn-near-perfect flick, now is your chance. Special features include a featurette about the making of the movie and one titled "Diary of A Country Sheriff."

Dan in Real Life
I will be the first to admit this wasn't my favorite movie of all time but like most people, I really love Juliette Binoche and Steve Carell, and I figured you may like to know that this one is out on DVD.

Dan in Real Life is about an advice columnist (Carell) raising three daughters on his own. Yet he could use some advice himself when he meets and develops "eyes" (as they say) for the beautiful Marie (Binoche) - who also happens to be Dan's brother's girlfriend. Much soul-searching over this and other life issues goes down when Marie joins a vacation with the entire extended family. One of the best things about the movie is the great music provided almost entirely by Sondre Lerche.

Celebs Rush the Red Carpet

Keri Russell showed off her amazing post-baby body getting giggly with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers at the red carpet premiere of their new movie August Rush in NYC last night. Their costars Terrence Howard, Robin Williams and Freddie Highmore (Kate Winslet's adorable son in Finding Neverland) also came out for the screening and kept cozy despite the chilly NYC night. In the movie, Keri and Jonathan play a pair of musicians who are forced to give up a baby for adoption after a one night stand, and their son uses his musical gift to find his way back to them after 11 years. Sounds like a sweet sentimental treat just in time to get us in the mood for the holidays.

Fall Movie Preview: Family Matters

We may not be getting the crisp fall weather just yet, but we are getting previews for tons of movies opening in the fall. In preparation for this autumn and winter at the theaters, I've broken up the lengthy list of upcoming movies into many small themes for my Fall Movie Preview series. This way, you'll be in the know when the chillier months roll around, bringing a whole new crop of new films. Today's roundup features the movies that explore those fickle family dynamics.

Martian Child
Yes, that's John Cusack in what looks like it will be one of the fall's most endearing movies. Cusack plays "a recently widowed science fiction writer who adopts a young boy that claims to be from Mars. But the new father ignores some sage advice about the perils of parenthood from his sister and gets more than he bargained for when a series of strange occurrences lead him to believe the child's claim may be true." The trailer on the movie's website is adorable and heart-squeezy, so check it out before Martians land in theaters October 26.

Juno
I really can't wait for this movie to open December 14, but at this point I'd settle for any kind of promotional material - photos, trailers, anything! The cast is basically a roundup of some of my favorite actors ever: Michael Cera, Ellen Page, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner, Allison Janney and Rainn Wilson. Page plays a bright teenager whose life is compromised when she's faced with an unplanned pregnancy by - wait for it - Michael Cera's character. Luckily, a wealthy suburban couple (Bateman and Garner) agree to adopt Juno's baby. According to this plot description, "Juno has the total support of her parents (J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney) as she faces some tough decisions, flirts with adulthood and ultimately figures out where she belongs." I seriously can't wait.

The Savages
This is one of the many movies that I wish I'd been able to see at Sundance this year, as it stars some highly capable actors: Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In this "serious comedy," the two play middle-aged siblings struggling to come to terms with their father's deteriorating health. The trailer looks poignant and funny at the same time. The Savages opens December 26.

Grace Is Gone
I think someone recently decided that John Cusack plays a damn good widower, since this fall finds him in not one, but two roles that require him to put on the sad-puppy face. Grace Is Gone also screened at Sundance and was quickly snatched up by The Weinstein Company. Cusack plays Stanley Phillips, a father of two who learns that his wife has died in the Iraq war. He knows he must tell his daughters about their mother's death, but first decides to bring them on a road trip to their favorite amusement park. On the journey, the daughters try to understand their father's strange behavior, and Stanley realizes that he needs to know who his children are before he can help them with this sorrowful turn of events.

Darjeeling Limited
Wes Anderson's latest project looks extremely promising: Josh Schwartzman, Adrien Brody and Owen Wilson play brothers on a journey together in India. The trailer is all sorts of bizarre mixed and sweet with a dash of funny.

Rails and Ties
The plot description for this movie makes it seem achingly sad, so hopefully there are traces of redemption in there somewhere: "Tom (Kevin Bacon) and Megan Stark (Marcia Gay Harden) always thought there would be time - time to have children, time to take that trip to San Francisco, time to fix the problems in their marriage. But Megan's illness and Tom's inability to face the possibility of losing her are stealing all the time they have left. All Tom can do is bury himself in his job as a train conductor... Tom's train has hit a car on the tracks in a tragic turn of events that, while not his fault, may still cost him his job. Worse, a young woman is dead and her son, Davey, has been left to cope with the loss of his mother. The accident puts the Starks and Davey on their own collision course. But instead of leading to tragedy, this crossing could mean new hope for a woman who has only one chance left to fulfill her dreams, for a man who must learn to open his heart before it's too late, and for a young boy who has never known the true meaning of family." I'll be checking out Rails and Ties - tissues in hand - when it opens October 26.

August Rush
I'm very curious about August Rush, a story about a lonely boy who seeks out his birth parents (played by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Kerry Russell) through their shared gift for music. Here's what I'm not as stoked to see: Robin Williams playing (what else?) the inspirational urban cowboy. Check out the trailer before August Rush opens November 21.

First Look: Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers in August Rush

August Rush is a fantasy-drama (I think) that comes out in October, but I know many of you are fans of Jonathan Rhys Meyers (don't forget to enter my "Tudors" DVD giveaway!), so I'm passing along this brand-new trailer. Keri Russell also stars, as Louis Rush's (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) love interest. Together the two have a child, August Rush, who they are forced to give up (played by Freddie Highmore who played Charlie in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Later, they all magically seek each other out via their unique musical talents. Or something.

All I know is that it looks like Robin Williams plays an advice-doling urban cowboy - without a trace of irony. The jury's still out as to who, exactly, this movie is geared toward, but if you like any of these actors the trailer is worth checking out, so

Video: Brad Pitt Talks Engagement to Angelina Jolie at Cannes

Brad arrived at Cannes this morning for a photocall and press conference for his film Killing Them Softly, and he spoke to reporters about his recent engagement. 400 Meter Diva Natasha Hastings on Running For Olympic Gold

Finishing a quick tour once around the track with times hovering at the 50-second mark, the potential US Track Team is deep with female talent ready to conquer the 400-meter event at the Summer games. The women's relay team will most likely have a shot for a repeat gold medal performance, too. A member of the winning relay team in Beijing, Natasha Hastings told us in a recent interview that she hopes to break the tape in the individual 400-meter event in London this August. Recognizing the possibly tense team dynamic that accompanies four fast women on a relay team who are also vying for gold in the solo event, Natasha explained, "Track and field certainly is an individual sport. But when we get on the relay, we are teammates - but to get on the team, we are competing against each other. So it does kind of create an interesting mesh."

Hastings ran for the South Carolina Gamecocks, but the nickname she earned during her college years, the 400 Meter Diva, has a much more feminine ring to it. When interviewed before a big collegiate meet and asked why the native New Yorker chose a southern school, she replied that the team all looked like divas - in a good way. The moniker stuck and Natasha explains, "I just ran with it." Her college coach also taught her that "If you look good, you feel good. And if you feel good, you run good." Looking good included wearing business suits to meets and makeup on the track. "I never compete without makeup. It is kind of like my game face. It's part of my routine when I'm getting ready to go out to the track. It's fun, but it's part of my ritual."

"Will We Ever Be on the Same Page?"

My boyfriend and I have been together since April of last year; we were introduced through someone I worked with at the time. When we first starting hanging out, we both said we weren't really looking for anything too serious, but if things became serious that was okay. Long story short, we really hit it off, so we became exclusive. In what felt like a natural manner to me, marriage started getting mentioned in conversations last summer, somewhere around July or August. At one point in August or September, I said something to the effect of, "I can see myself being married to you by this time next year," and he agreed. So, I was very happy, thinking that I was in love, and on the same page as the person I was in love with. I casually started looking around on the Internet at rings, dresses, and places to get married and every now and then we would even talk about each of our preferences. We agreed on a beach wedding, and I found this place we both loved in Florida.

Christmas came around and he wanted to know what I wanted. So, I tell him not to spend a bunch of money on a present, but to instead put it toward an engagement ring, because money is tight for us. He gave me pearl earrings and a dress for Christmas, and I loved both of them. On New Years Eve, us being married by the following summer came up in conversation. Hearing this, NYE, he proceeds to tell me that he didn't mean that, he just agreed with me because he didn't know I was being serious. WTF!?! I just freeze; I can't think, talk, nothing.

The next day, we talk it over as I am (I think understandably) very hurt. I don't want to rush him into getting married, but I know that I want to be with him for the rest of my life. I am 23 and he is 25, we get along wonderfully and have the same goals. My family adores him, his mom loves me, in short we are perfect together. He says that he thinks it is normal for people to be engaged about a year after they start dating, so I am thinking that everything is fine and our relationship is still on the route for marriage.

A couple of days ago, we had a big discussion about what the next few years will bring for us. I am going to go back to school to become a dental hygienist and he either wants to go back to school or become a contractor. It will take me about three years to get through school, so I said that I would really prefer to be married before I start, as we won't really have time to once I am in school. I make it perfectly clear that I am not trying to force him into a corner, but that this is just how I feel about things. He says he would love to get married to me very soon, and I am over the moon, thinking things are finally okay.

Last night, he tells me that he didn't mean that, either. He explained that he said it because he wants me to go to school now and is trying to trick me into thinking we will be married first...I don't know what to do anymore. We live together, we are in love, we both want to get married. I don't see the hold up! I don't want a big wedding, we wouldn't go broke over it. My dad would of course, chip in, and I know his family would help to. I am just very ready to take this step and he keeps giving me false hope.

What should I do? I don't want to leave him, but I really don't see what good it will do to wait years and years to get married.

Kathryn Ireland Talks Decorating, Flea Marketing, and Handling Clients

This week, I had the opportunity to chat with interior designer Kathryn Ireland, a cast member of Bravo's hit new reality show Million Dollar Decorators, about her career, her clients, her shopping routine, her decorating advice, and her experience on the series. CasaSugar: I know you spend your Summers in France. What do you see as the difference between the way the French and Americans decorate?

Kathryn Ireland: Gosh! Very differently. The French French or people that have houses in France? I mean there’s something completely alluring about the French way of life when you think of the French countryside - the bucolic landscape, sitting under trees drinking rosé. I just love farmhouses. I don’t like the grand; I’m never drawn to anything grand. I like sort of living in a cow barn. Finding places that are interesting for me - it’s very much about the exterior of the countryside. I’m a country person at heart.

I think what I’m drawn to about the French is that people inherit pieces, which is also European. I grew up with a mother that decorated our house. She knew what to do, and I think there’s something so inherent about creating your own home, which is what I’m trying to teach my clients. You know a lot of people have hectic lines and it’s a full-time job trying to get couches and sofa and tie it all together, and some people just don’t have that talent to know what goes with what.

CS: Do you have any tips for bargaining and dealing with dealers at markets?

KI: Oh I’m a great bargainer! I go to Morocco. Marrakech is one of my favorite places, and in fact I’ve just come back from there. I’m doing a container sale for One Kings Lane on August 6, and that was so much fun.

But yea, I know how to haggle, but I also know when I see a good thing and it’s a good price. You know when you do a house and you get a budget, I know what I’m working, and I say let’s not get picky. I may spend a bunch of money on a piece of artwork for the kitchen. It’s about where the things that do matter. For example, in my kitchen in Santa Monica, I have a Damien Hirst in my kitchen and it’s fantastic. It makes the room.
