Melrose Place Getting a Makeover - Ashlee Simpson Is Out!

Just two months after Melrose Place's debut comes the news that the producers are looking to make over the low-rated series - which means that both Ashlee Simpson and Colin Egglesfield are out.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, executive producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin reveal that Simpson was always supposed to leave after episode 12. Quiet-but-psycho Violet and recovering alcoholic Auggie will depart with the Sydney murder mystery (which must mean that one of them is definitely the murderer, right?) in January. The hope is to make the show lighter and more fun after the homicide is wrapped up, and though they're losing two characters, several new ones will show up, including Heather Locklear's Amanda Woodward and a new doctor in the complex.

I was a bit skeptical about the Melrose Place reboot at first, but after watching the pilot, I gotta say I'm hooked. First Look: Melrose Place, The Vampire Diaries, The Beautiful Life, and Parental Discretion Advised

We already heard that the CW had chosen a lineup of models, vampires, and LA singles for the Fall, but now we have a chance to see them in action. After the jump below, I've got the first preview clips of these takes on the Melrose Place residents, the lives of high-powered models, and the undead.

Speaking of undead - that may be exactly the status of the Gossip Girl spinoff. The much-discussed show so far doesn't have a place on either the Fall or midseason schedules, and that was presumed to be the end of things. But no: The network is still considering picking it up later, and it's presumably competing with Body Politic with Minka Kelly and Jason Dohring. So it'll be a bit of a wait to see if either of those shows can join Melrose Place, The Beautiful Life, The Vampire Diaries, and Parental Discretion Advised on the CW's schedule.

Ashlee Simpson and Libby From Lost Nab Jobs at the CW

The CW has two pretty high-profile spinoffs in the works for the Fall TV season - one of Gossip Girl, one of Melrose Place - and over the past couple of days, they've gotten busy adding some big names to their casts:

Ashlee Simpson has nabbed a role in the Melrose Place spinoff, returning to the network that gave her a breakout job on 7th Heaven. In Melrose, she'll play Violet, "a bright-eyed but shrewd small-town girl and recent LA transplant who has come to town with a secret." She joins Michael Rady and Katie Cassidy in the ensemble.
Meanwhile, Cynthia Watros, aka Libby from Lost, will play Celia "CeCe" Rhodes in the Gossip Girl spinoff, tentatively titled Lily. She'll be the '80s version of awesome grandma CeCe played by Caroline Lagerfelt in the present-day GG. Meanwhile, the show has also added Ryan Hansen (Dick from Veronica Mars) as Shep, who's got a futile crush on Lily's sister, Carol (Krysten Ritter).

So, what do you make of Ashlee's return to full-time acting? And could you imagine Cynthia Watros, Brittany Snow, Kelly Rutherford, and Blake Lively all being related?

According to ComingSoon, America Ferrera will star in the coming-of-age drama An Invisible Sign of My Own, which will be directed by Mad Hot Ballroom's Marilyn Agrelo.
Paramount and Brad Pitt's production company Plan B have picked up the rights to two memoirs, Beautiful Boy and Tweak, Variety reports.
FX has ordered a series about a rebel motorcycle gang from one of the producers of The Shield, reports Zap2it.
Mariah Carey's album remains at the top of the charts for the second week in a row, while Ashlee Simpson is coming in at No. 4, behind Leona Lewis and the Flight of the Conchords album, writes E! Online.
The iTunes store has added three series from BBC America to its catalog, Broadcasting & Cable reports.
Reuters reports that there's already a book and documentary in the works about New York governor Eliot Spitzer.
Spike TV has given the green light to its first comedy series, The Factory, an improvised show from the co-creator of Strangers with Candy, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
Jonah Hill is in talks to provide the comic relief as Shia's sidekick in the Transformers sequel, writes ComingSoon.

Can Robert Smith Cure Ashlee Simpson's Lack of Talent?

Just the other day, I was wondering, "What have The Cure been up to lately?" I would have never in a million years guessed that the answer would be: working with Ashlee Simpson. But it sounds like that's what Cure frontman Robert Smith is up to.

According to info that EW.com gleaned at South by Southwest, Smith is one of an infinite number of collaborators helping Ashlee on her next album. Oh, Robert, say it ain't so! I know you might be a little bit bonkers, and I respect that, but I trusted that you knew the difference between good music and a punk pop wannabee. Right? Right?!?

Pitchfork is speculating that this might be an April Fool's joke, but oddly, Smith seems to be something of an Ashlee fan. He reportedly came to see her onstage in Chicago, prompting her to say she'd love to work with him. What, Ashlee, after getting all blond and girly you want to do the "punk" thing again? Good luck.

Unsurprisingly, Smith is one of many collaborators rumored to be working on Simpson's next album. Daddy Joe says she's also tapping Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, Timbaland, John Legend, and Keane's Tim Rice-Oxley.
