Do You Still Care About the Arrested Development Movie?

It's been four years since Arrested Development went off the air, and two years since plans for the movie were set into place. Lately, there has been more news, with creator Mitch Hurwitz using last week's TCA panel for Running Wilde to comment on the, um, development.

And now it sounds like some star wattage may help the flick come along - Jennifer Aniston has said she wants a role in the movie. Her costar in The Switch, Jason Bateman, is apparently considering Aniston as a cast addition, which could very well come true if and when the film gets made.

A script is in the works, and the busy cast still seems eager to do it, but we've heard all this before - when is it going to happen? Furthermore, at this point I'm wondering if fans are still as rabid for a big-screen adaptation as they were a couple of years ago. Is it time to put the idea to bed, or are you still as excited for an Arrested Development movie as you were on day one?

TCA Tidbits: Ghost Sex, Lipstick Jungle, Pushing Daisies, More

It's the last day of the TCA press tour, and ABC is presenting a ton of new midseason series today, including Nathan Fillion's Castle and Amber Tamblyn's The Unusuals. The news has been coming fast and furious, so here are some tidbits from this morning's ABC sessions and yesterday's NBC panels:

Apparently, we should stop using the term "ghost sex" to describe Izzie and Denny's relationship on Grey's Anatomy, stat. "It's not a ghost, which you will learn," ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson said. He also said skeptical viewers should be patient and wait to see where the story is going: "I actually think that when you get to the end of the season and you see what [creator Shonda Rhimes] had in mind, it might not be your cup of tea, but I think you will be surprised at how insightful and smart the storyline itself is."
If you were hoping NBC's executives would give some clarity to the Lipstick Jungle cancellation situation, no such luck: According to entertainment president Angela Bromstad, no decision has been reached on the show's future, and it will be a conversation when the network sets its Fall schedule.
These were pretty much no-brainers, but NBC has renewed The Office, 30 Rock, and The Biggest Loser.
Count Portia de Rossi in for an Arrested Development movie: Despite calling her new character in ABC's Better Off Ted her all-time favorite, she'd be up for reprising Lindsay Bluth on the big screen. "I would love to do a movie for Arrested," she said - before adding to the confusion surrounding the project by saying "the cast are all on board." If that gets off the ground, she'd be a busy lady: She also wants to start a vegan shoe line.

NBC's aware that Heroes needs to change things up: "Tim [Kring] and I have talked to getting back to the core of the show, that it's these ordinary people with extraordinary powers, and that they may have taken on too much in terms of the storyline," Bromstad said.
McPherson was sadly noncommittal on the future of the unaired episodes of Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, and Eli Stone. He said he's hopeful they'll get out somehow, but there would be lots of financial issues and rights issues to deal with first.
Jimmy Fallon snapped a picture of the TCA crowd with his iPhone and said he'd be bringing a decidedly geeky feel to his version of Late Night when he takes over in March.
Apparently, we needn't fear that moving to an earlier time slot will make Conan O'Brien tame: "I like to stand on things. I like to lick things. I jump around," he said - and none of that is going away. He also said he's hoping his band will make the move to LA with him. As for his Late Night farewell, he said he's aware that longtime fans will want certain things, but "what I don't want to do is a big salute to me."
Rachel Maddow, who was here to chat about her MSNBC talk show, on President Bush's post-presidency plans: "No international travel, probably, for the rest of his life."

Fox Searchlight Reportedly Picks Up Arrested Development Movie!

If all the "sources" are correct, Arrested Development fans have something to celebrate today: The movie is a go!

Yup, I think I just blue myself.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying today that Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard are "reportedly closing deals for the long-gestating project from Imagine and Fox Searchlight."

E! Online's Watch With Kristin is going a step further to confirm that without a doubt, the "Arrested Development movie will happen." However! There is apparently some behind-the-scenes drama already, since "one of the show's original cast members has not signed on to the movie." Kristin continues, "The good news is that aside from this actor (who, sorry, cannot be named), I'm told that all of the other main cast members have committed to be a part of the big-screen project." That utterly sucks about the one "holdout," though maybe he or she will come around? Fingers (and hooks!) crossed!

Now, if you need me I'll be in the hospital bar, wearing my "slut" t-shirt.

Which Arrested Development Character Do You Miss the Most?

In case you didn't hear, we are closer than ever to getting an Arrested Development movie! Jason Bateman recently told E! that they're in talks to resurrect the Bluths' story for the big screen.

Despite owning all three seasons of AD on DVD, I have missed the Bluths terribly since the show went off the air almost exactly two years ago. I know there are lots of AD fans lurking out there, so tell me: Which character have you missed the most?

Mansome Trailer: Will Arnett and Jason Bateman Go to the Spa

Documentarian Morgan Spurlock took on the country's growing health epidemic in Super Size Me and the expansive advertising industry in The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, but now he's tackling an even bigger issue: manscaping. In the trailer for Spurlock's new film, Mansome, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman work with Spurlock to get to the bottom of why men's maintenance has become more important than ever in recent years, with the help of some celebs as well as everyday guys.

Clearly this movie isn't as serious as the director's previous projects, but it does look kind of hilarious. Arnett and Bateman have perfected their bro-chemistry (thanks to Arrested Development), and I definitely got a kick out of them in mud masks. While I'm still not sure about the balance between funny and fact, I'm happy to listen to Zach Galifianakis wax poetic about facial hair any day. The flick premiered this week at Tribeca, but it won't be open in theaters until May 18. Take a look at the trailer after the jump.

Alia Shawkat on Touching Ed Helms Inappropriately and Hoping For an Arrested Development Sex Change

Alia Shawkat swung through NYC this week on a busy press tour for her new movie Cedar Rapids, which we previewed last month at Sundance. She plays Bree, a prostitute who enjoys a sordid entanglement with Ed Helms's straight-laced insurance salesman character, in the film directed by Youth in Revolt's Miguel Arteta. Shawkat talked about getting up close and personal with Helms and also addressed the long-running rumors about an Arrested Development movie that have regained steam after the series' creator, Mitch Hurwitz, confirmed his involvement. She also had some interesting ideas for her character, Maeby. Check it out.

BuzzSugar: In this film, you're playing a prostitute, which is new territory for you. What drew you to this role?
Alia Shawkat: "I got a call from [Miguel, the director] and he was like, 'Alia, I want you to play a prostitute!' And I was like, 'Ok!' And it kind of went from there. . . She’s a hooker with a heart of gold so it was fun. I got to do some research - not go out on the street! - but watch films with hookers with hearts of gold. And I got to say some weird dirty things.

BS: You also got to do some crazy things. Was that another perk to this role?
AS: Doing the meth and dancing, and doing real meth - no we didn’t do that! It was really fun. That’s what’s so cool about being an actor, you get to live so many different lives. This one upped every character I’ve ever played.

BS: You and Anne Heche were pretty much the main ladies in the film. Did you two take on the boys comedian club together?
AS: I’m used to being around a lot of male comedians, so it is kind of like a boys club in that you have to sort of earn your say. But after they started hanging out with us for a little while and they see we aren’t just like, 'Oh, tee hee that’s funny!' that we’re funnier than them sometimes, then they start to respect us. They’re all very sweet guys, most comedians are. They’re just a little pervvy.

BS: And of course, the leading man was Ed Helms. How was it working with him?
AS: I was expecting Ed to be a lot dirtier in comparison to some of the other comedians I’ve worked with, that are usually pretty dirty. But he’s such a gentleman, an old Southern boy. He's very polite and respectful with women.

BS: That's always good to hear!
AS: I remember one scene in the bathroom, Miguel would sometimes tell one of the actors, ‘Surprise me and do something!’ He told me, ‘I want you to surprise me and surprise Ed.' . . So we’re in the bathroom, and you don’t see me - just the back of my head, and I grabbed his crotch, like grabbed it tight, and he’s supposed to be on meth and he got this amazing look on his face. And afterward he was so pink and blushed, and he was like, ‘I didn’t know you were going to do that! I didn’t know you were going to do that!’ And was all giggly.

BS: Everyone of course wants to know about the Arrested Development movie now that Mitch Hurwitz said it's on. What can you say about that?
AS: I think it’s very exciting that he said it publicly! It would be great I think it's still kind of in the limbo of we’re in the dark still. But all the cast members, everyone I’ve seen recently, said we’re in! We haven't been sent a script or anything cause he’s still working on it. It’s pretty much the same thing, we just hope it happens but we’ll see when it comes to fruition. But hopefully it’s soon. That was kind of a nice thing, his saying it’s coming out soon. Once we read it I think everyone’s going to be in.

BS: Are you looking forward to all the changes for the characters?
AS: That’s the weirdest thing, and something that’s so exciting about the prospect of a movie. Every episode we had no idea what would happen to the characters. Week to week we’d be like, ‘What the shit do I have to do? Ok, whatever!’ And now that so much time has passed, and so much is going to already have happened to the characters, they’re going to have to kind of explain where they are at. I have no idea what to expect, and that’s what’ so exciting about it. Unlike any other writer, Mitch is just so out there that it’s thrilling and exciting to see what will happen.

BS: Anything you're really looking forward to finding out?
AS: Of course, because I’m egotistical, I’m just so looking forward to seeing where Maeby and George Michael’s relationship ends up. Because now that they’re kind of adults, how they relate to each other or if they’re together or if they’re not, it could be anything.

BS: What would your dream for Maeby be?
AS: My dream? I don’t know. It could be cool to do something fun, like if she got a sex change or something.

BS: And you've worked with so many great comedians already - any one left on the list?
AS: Everybody! I’d love to work with Bill Murray. That would be really fun. I don’t know if he’d like me very much. Gary Shandling, I don’t know if he’s doing a whole love of movies now, but The Larry Sanders Show was one of my favorite shows.
