TV Tonight: Army Wives Season Three Premiere

I know I already rounded up 10 reasons why Summer TV won't be such a drag, but today's the day when I truly believe it. The third season of Army Wives begins tonight! I've long stopped feeling silly for having this much love (and it's a lot of love) for a Lifetime original series, and instead decided to simply bond with my fellow Army Wives fans. You're out there. I know you're out there.

Check out the description for tonight's first episode: "The tribe offers their support to Claudia Joy and Michael, who are supposed to leave for Brussels, but have one little problem . . . Emmalin has disappeared. Meanwhile, Roxy has her own challenges dealing with the bar and Betty’s nephew wanting to own it outright. As for Denise, her affair with former patient Mac will have definite consequences." TV Tonight: Army Wives Season Two Finale

I have been faithfully watching my Army Wives ever since the second season began over the summer. And now it's coming to a close, which bums me out because I actually think this season has been better than the first. It may sound cheesy, but I feel a little attached to these ladies, and I'll miss them when they're gone (I know, I know, so sappy).

If you've been watching lately, you know that Michael is being transferred to Brussels, upending the Holden family's life on post. Roland and Joan are adapting to parenthood together while Roxy and Trevor continue to attend Al-Anon and AA meetings, respectively. Over the season, Pamela has struggled with feeling safe while her husband is away and Denise, in the most intriguing storyline to me, is coming into her own as an individual and has found romance with one of her former patients.

The previews often make the episodes look intensely dramatic and the ones for tonight are no different, hinting at more heartbreak for the ladies. I don't doubt it since the season one finale left us with such a breathlessly tense cliffhanger. To check out the preview and some clips from tonight's show, read more.

Buzz In: What Summer TV Shows Are You Still Watching?

It's almost Labor Day weekend, and you know what that means! No, not the last of beach weather or the beginning of a new school year - Fall TV is almost back! I'm beyond thrilled to get back into the worlds of my favorite shows, whether it's the juicy salaciousness of Gossip Girl, the dramatics of Grey's Anatomy, or the deadpan hilarity of The Office. I've missed my TV friends.

That said, there are a few Summer shows that I've become addicted to, and will certainly miss once the new TV season starts up. Kathy Griffin's My Life on the D-List is already over, and I'm kinda sad about it. I loved watching her ridiculous antics week after week. Mad Men is still going strong, and you know how I feel about that show because I tell you every week in my rundown posts.

I'm still totally hooked on Army Wives, and I actually think this season is better than the first. This isn't often the case with second seasons, and I gotta say Lifetime continues to impress me with this show. Finally: Swingtown. It's not necessarily high-quality television, but somewhere along the way I got hooked on this show, and I find myself hoping some network will pick up the series if CBS does not.

Variety's Women's Impact Report: Katherine Fugate

Variety has issued its annual Women's Impact Report, highlighting women who have made an impression at all levels of entertainment. Just like last year, the list includes executive powerhouses, household-name performers, and lesser-known talents. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be spotlighting some of the women whom I find particularly noteworthy. Today's pick: creator of the TV series Army Wives, Katherine Fugate.

It's hard enough to draw audiences to the theater for movies having to do with the Iraq War; attempting to bring these stories into living rooms week after week is a huge undertaking. But by focusing the stories more on the universal topics of friendship, family ties and community, Army Wives creator Katherine Fugate has successfully found an audience for a show about American military families.

One of the things that I think resonates most with viewers is the show's emphasis on community, for which Fugate recognizes a deep-seated desire in our society. She told Variety, "The one thing that moved me during my research among real-life Army wives was the camaraderie between the women. They will bake a cake for someone they barely know, and that was so moving for me. We ache for community." Army Wives will be back for a third season, with 18 episodes scheduled to air sometime in 2009, Zap2it reports.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms will star together in a "bachelor-party comedy" titled Hangover.
Jordana Brewster will guest-star on Chuck as Jill, the college girlfriend who legendarily broke Chuck's heart, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The success of Wall-E has apparently sparked new talk of a Hello, Dolly stage revival, Variety reports.
ABC and FX topped GLAAD's annual "responsibility index," Reuters reports, while NBC and Fox, among others, received failing grades.
ComingSoon has the news that Jon Heder will star in another Napoleon Dynamite-type oddball comedy, titled Loudermilk.
Gio wins? Ugly Betty's Christopher Gorham has been cast in the CBS midseason series Harper's Island - though ABC still insists we haven't seen the last of Henry, TV Guide reports.
ComingSoon writes that Fox has acquired the screen rights to the recent NYT bestseller One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy, Khrushchev and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.
Army Wives: Season 1
I admitted earlier this month that I'm addicted to the Lifetime series Army Wives when I added it to my must-haves list for June, and when I declared it No. 3 of the top 10 reasons to keep your TV on this Summer. And I'm the first to admit that the show (based on Tanya Biank's memoir Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives) didn't entice me when I first heard about it. Now, however, I find it to be intelligent, humorous and awfully compelling, given that it centers around the current war.

The second season just premiered last Sunday, so you've got some time to catch up while recording the new episodes.

Special featurettes include titles like: "'Have at It' With the Army Wives" which is a "Q&A Session with the cast of Army Wives featuring questions submitted by fans" and "Wives On the Homefront," including "an inside look at real army wives as they share their fascinating stories and experiences."

The Other Boleyn Girl
I chose the book The Other Boleyn Girl as my very first selection for the Buzz Book Club, and knowing that the screen adaptation starred Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson as the competing sisters I was curious to see what parts of the novel they kept and what they skipped. All in all, I wasn't totally thrilled with the outcome but still found the filmmakers' choices with the source material interesting. If you missed this one in the theater, now is your chance to check it out.

Special features include a featurette on bringing the historical story and novel to life, as well as a featurette on the life of a lady and court etiquette in 16th century England.

The Bucket List
Look at those guys. That's the happiest DVD cover I've seen in a while. Anyway, The Bucket List had a very successful opening weekend at the box office and opened some peoples' eyes to the potential of a demographic often overlooked by Hollywood. You know, anyone over the age of 35.

The story follows two very ill fellas who happen to get placed in the same hospital room and decide together to break out of their hospital gowns and live the life they have left to its fullest. It's probably a good choice for an at-home movie with a multi-generational audience.

Special features include the music video for the song John Mayer wrote for the film, "Say."

TV Tonight: Army Wives Season 2 Premiere

I know I've made my love for Army Wives known, so I won't continue to expound on the numerous ways this Lifetime show surprises me. Sure, it dips into the ordinary melodramatic territory that seems to be Lifetime's specialty, but it also touches on some important issues and often makes for riveting TV. The cliffhanger from the first season, when a bomber finds his way to the women's favorite watering hole - especially set to an eerie, slowed-down version of "Goodbye, Stranger" - left me literally holding my breath.

In tonight's season premiere, the women (and Roland) deal with the aftermath of this bombing as we discover what, exactly, went on that day in the bar. You can watch the first four minutes or so of the episode (which is already getting me right in the feelings) here.

TV Tonight: "Army Wives" Season Finale

I can't believe this season of "Army Wives" is nearly over! I've grown almost as attached to this series as I am to the shows I watch during the regular TV season. The good news is that the series was picked up for another season on Lifetime, so at least tonight's episode is not goodbye forever.

In the tense-looking finale, a terrorist threat forces the post to high alert, and Trevor, Frank and Chase are immediately deployed. This leaves their loved ones commiserating together, but when a dangerous visitor comes around, as the preview says, "Their bond of friendship may not be enough." TV Tonight: Lifetime's Sunday Lineup

Apparently, I'm in Lifetime's demographic now. The network that I used to laugh at for its issue-of-the-week movies that played like after-school specials for grown women is suddenly delivering something akin to must-see TV. Tonight, two new shows enter Lifetime's Sunday lineup, joining the already popular "Army Wives," and I'll admit I'm setting up a TiVo season pass for at least one of them.

That would be "State of Mind," one of my top 10 shows to watch this summer, starring Lili Taylor as a frazzled therapist whose personal life is more disastrous than her clients'. I recently checked out the first hour, which airs at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific, and while it's far from perfect, there's a lot to like. For one thing, Taylor delivers the kind of tough yet vulnerable performance that renders her character neither too perfect nor too neurotic. For another, Devon Gummersall - better known as Brian Krakow from "My So-Called Life" - has grown up quite nicely (ack, another sign I'm in Lifetime's demographic!). The pilot has a little too much plot, and a few stories that wrap up a little too neatly, but it gets stronger as the episode progresses, and the ending left me wanting to see how it will grow.

"Side Order of Life" also joins the schedule tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific. Possibly the most notable thing about it is the appearance of Jason Priestly, but I'm curious to know what you think of it if you watch. You can also check out the first episode online now.
