Movie Preview: Valentine's Day Starring Everyone

By now you've probably seen the myriad on-set shots for the upcoming ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day. Oh and by "ensemble", I mean the most star-studded cast to hit Hollywood in years.

This movie has (take a deep breath with me) Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Emma Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Topher Grace, Shirley Maclaine, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner, and Taylor Swift. Did I miss anyone? Probably.

Put all these beautiful stars in a rom-com, set the trailer to a booming pop song, and you've got me excited. The preview doesn't give a ton of the plot away (though I can make some educated guesses based on the title), or but I'm already analyzing the couplings we see in the clip. Anne Hathaway and Topher Grace? Brilliant. Bradley Cooper and Julia Roberts? I'm not sure about their chemistry, but I guess he does like older women. Zing!

The only question is, with these components, are we looking at He's Just Not That Into You 2.0 or Love Actually 2.0? Or neither? Watch the new trailer and let me know what you think when you read more.

Marvel at the Teaser Trailer for Alice in Wonderland

Sure, the pictures were great- but they can't compare with finally seeing Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in motion. Today brings us the first teaser trailer, and it's such a delight to finally see Burton's mystical take on Alice coming to life. This saturated, stylized take seems a far cry from the fairytale-like TV movie I remember watching as a kid.

As the Mad Hatter, Johnny Depp gives this teaser an appropriately creepy voiceover as we watch Alice (Mia Wasikowska) tumble down the rabbit hole and end up in a magical fantasy world where potions make you shrink, green-eyed cheshire cats grin hauntingly, and impatient rabbits keep time on a ticking pocket watch.

The movie also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Alan Rickman. This is one movie I definitely can't wait to see on the big screen. If you feel the same, mark your calendars for a very important date: March 5, 2010.

New Images From Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland!

Expectations are high for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie and from the new pictures today, it looks like Burton will not disappoint. Vibrantly colorful and whimsical, the images show us how Burton has imagined the Mad Hatter (played by Johnny Depp), the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). These pictures are very, very cool. I cannot wait to see more!

Gyllenhaal and Hathaway Reunite For Love

Well, for Love and Other Drugs, that is. Brokeback Mountain couple Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are in talks to reunite for an adaptation of Jamie Reidy's nonfiction book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. The director is Edward Zwick who created Once and Again and who directed Legends of the Fall, Courage Under Fire, The Last Samurai, and Defiance among others. Here's more:

Reidy was a drug rep for Pfizer in the late 1990s who eventually wrote a memoir that shined a light on the practices of the pharmaceutical industry. Gyllenhaal will play the salesman, who begins a relationship with a woman who has Parkinson's (Hathaway) while on one of his sales calls. Their love story plays out in the political and social context of the time.

Aww. This one's going to break my heart a little bit, I can already feel it. And I really like these two together onscreen - what about you?

Anne Hathaway to Play Judy Garland on Stage and Screen

Anne Hathaway will soon be doing double duty as Judy Garland: She's been cast for both a theater and film adaptation of a book about the troubled star's life.

The roles are based on the biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, which comes from the same writer who wrote the Truman Capote biography that was adapted into the 2005 Oscar-nominated film. The Garland book was originally published in 2001, and the Weinstein Company recently picked up the rights to it for both stage and screen.

Harvey Weinstein said Hathaway "will be a true class act in this challenging role." We know from this year's Oscars that Hathaway can sing - and from Rachel Getting Married that she isn't afraid to play the dark sides of addiction, which Garland struggled with throughout her life. Can you see Hathaway in this role?

Could Anne Hathaway Play Holly Golightly?

Relax: This is just a tiny little rumor and nobody is remaking Breakfast at Tiffany's (yet). But apparently the idea of a remake has been bandied about for a long time now, with the major issue being, of course, who would take on the iconic Audrey Hepburn role, Holly Golightly?

In Variety, Liz Smith claims that "if anybody could be Holly Golightly in the 21st century, it's Anne" Hathaway who, Smith says, "has an unusually alert, charming way about her - elfin, sexy, princessy, without being prissy."

Do you agree with this assessment of Hathaway? She's certainly been getting a lot of attention lately - do you think she could pull off this role?

Bride Wars: Trite and Joyless

Movies about weddings can be so fun and girly and sweet. It's easy to get swept up in the sparkly rings and the hunt for the perfect dresses and the cream-colored towering cakes. Plus, at the heart of Bride Wars there's also this relationship between two BFFs and I'm all for movies with an emphasis on the strength of female friendship. But this film doesn't do right by either the fun bridal aspect or the "girlfriend" aspect and comes up seeming empty and kinda sad.

Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) are the bestest of friends who spent much time as children dreaming of (and role-playing) their weddings. Now that they're adults (Liv a harsh, high-powered businesswoman and Emma the sensitive low-paid schoolteacher), they plan to be each other's maid of honor and as luck would have it, they both get engaged around the same time. But when they meet with wedding planner extraordinaire Marion St. Claire (Candice Bergen), an administrative hiccup causes the two weddings to be booked at the Plaza Hotel on the same date. When neither one will move her wedding, the two brides-to-be turn against each other, trying to sabotage the other's wedding, and their friendship suffers. For a "comedy," there's not much humor involved, and regardless of whether the intention was to satirize bridezillas, the truth is that the whole thing has this eerie antiquated feeling to it. What year are we living in? What era is this when two grown women have spent their lives - and apparently their whole friendship - aspiring mostly just to have lavish weddings? And then, when the weddings are booked on the same day, they attack each other? How is this that important? One of them is even demoted at her job because, as it appears in the movie, her hysterical little lady brain can't handle the stress of destroying her "best friend's" wedding and navigating the big bad business world. At the core of it all, their main "problem" is hard to accept. Just move the dang wedding!

During the moments when they’re supposedly these superclose best-best-best friends, I just can't buy it. They don't really seem to even like each other. But then when they are scheming and tricking each other, it's just kinda boring. Emma gets an orange tan. Liv's hair turns blue. Yawn. For one thing, we see most of this in the trailer so none of it is a funny surprise. For another thing, it's not particularly interesting or clever - it's merely cruel and catty.

Anne Hathaway saves some scenes with her endearing ways and that big ol' toothy smile. But Kate Hudson just looks. . . mean. She looks angry and mean all the time. Even when she’s supposed to be happy or sweet or apologetic there's no getting past that meanness. Something about her look in this movie, combined with her hateful, selfish character makes it difficult to like or care about Liv.

The movie redeems itself a little toward the end when the women have had their own journeys that ultimately lead them closer to each other and more in tune with the women they want to be, etc. etc. etc. But the sweetness of this doesn't quite make up for the joylessness of all that came before it.

Announcing The Winners: The 2009 Critics' Choice Awards

Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner Thursday at the Critics' Choice Awards, taking home the trophy for Best Picture as well as several other awards. The film won five awards in all, including trophies for its director, star, and composer.

Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep tied in the Best Actress category, with Hathaway winning for Rachel Getting Married and Streep for Doubt. On the men's side, Sean Penn won Best Actor for Milk.

Rachel Getting Married: Riveting and Painful Realism

I normally cry at weddings (and wedding scenes), so spending a whole wedding weekend with Rachel and her family in Rachel Getting Married was quite the teary experience. It’s not all weeping and sighing (though there's a lot of that, in both the joyful and the heart-wrenching scenes) - there is also silliness and humor. It's a movie about forgiveness, heartache and the tenderness of human frailty. So, despite the lovely main plot point (a backyard wedding overflowing with the generosity of friends and family), it's incredibly heavy.

Rachel (Rosemarie Dewitt) is indeed getting married at her father's home in Connecticut, and her recovering addict sister Kym (Anne Hathaway) is coming home from rehab to spend the weekend with her family. The duration of the movie takes place over this weekend as we watch the roots of the family's dysfunction unravel before us. There isn't a ton that happens in the story, but an awful lot is said and even more implied. The family spends the weekend in the warm company of friends and family, but while the guests are in full wedding celebration mode, the simmering emotions between the sisters, their father and their mother boil over, creating some majorly messy drama. Anne Hathaway's performance as Kym is touching and pitiful, though in truth, every performance in this film is top-notch. This is as much a testament to director Jonathan Demme as it is to the actors. The plot lurches in fits and spurts, with banal, everyday moments buffering the appalling and intensely sad ones. Each character is portrayed in a hyper-realistic light and their relationships are sticky and exhaustingly complex, with much of the disappointment in one another coming from their expectations of what a sister/father/mother should be doing or saying. It makes you cringe, even as (or because) you find some of these arguments or judgments familiar.

The handheld shaky-cam filming style makes the whole thing feel like documentary footage, or like we're just spying on these people. In the same way you're captivated by an interesting conversation taking place one table over in a restaurant, this movie is absorbing because it seems like we're really eavesdropping, almost to the point of feeling voyeuristic. This isn't a bad thing, really, though it's not for people who like their movie drama to be pretty or sugarcoated.

In reality, I think a lot of people like to see what's going on in other peoples' lives. It's why rubbernecking happens, why people "love to see a train wreck." Not (necessarily) to ridicule the victims but to feel like all of human experience is common and shared. There are plenty of tearful fights and screaming matches and tense showdowns in Rachel Getting Married. But there are just as many moments when you feel like you actually are at someone's wedding, what with all the heartfelt toasts and the warm embracing and the sweetly shy introductions between families. It's as fascinating and painful as any real-life human journey, which is both sad and comforting at the same time.
