The Office Rundown: Episode 14, "Goodbye, Toby Parts 1 & 2"

OMG, where to start?! The season finale of The Office was so. Freaking. Great. I honestly think this is hugely due to Amy Ryan's spot-on performance as the new HR lady at Dunder-Mifflin. I loved her! And then there were all the twists and turns (that didn't just have to do with Pam and Jim, like that very last scene!). And the whole storyline with Kevin is, I think, one of the funniest, cleverest things I've seen on television in a long time.

The going-away party for Toby was amazing! It made me so happy for the new party planner in town, Phyllis, as though she's an actual person I know in real life. Sometimes I think I get too involved in these shows. I really wanted to give her a hug.

Also, thanks to Creed, there now exists the job title of "Quabity Aschwitz." Amazing.

The episode began with a good old-fashioned prank from Jim. I don't know how John Krasinski keeps a straight face as Dwight is reaching his fingers along his face, trying to grab the ear piece. Too funny.
Kelly: "I can't believe this is your last day. How do you feel?"
Toby: "Fine. Good."
Kelly: "I feel weird."
Michael says he wants anti-gravity potion and Pam doesn't miss a beat. "So, how much anti-gravity potion do you want?"
Angela: "No, you know what, this is not a party planning committee anymore. And I don't want your foot money and I feel uncomfortable participating."
Pam, about her going to design school for three months in New York: "The timing is pretty much perfect." She lights up: "And that is the first time I've used the word perfect in here." She's so freaking cute.
Dwight says he hates the new HR lady because "She stinks. . . with her. . . ways and her. . . head."
Michael: "Thanks to Toby, I have a very strong prejudice against Human Resources. I believe that the department is a breeding ground for monsters. What I failed to consider, though is that not all monsters are bad. Like E.T. Is Holly our extra-terrestrial? Maybe. Or maybe she's just an awesome woman from this planet."

Seriously, Holly thinking Kevin is mentally challenged is probably not too P.C. but it made me laugh until I was choking on my own laughter. He offers her an M&M. "I keep them here at my desk so that everybody doesn't take them."
Holly: "Well, that is a very safe place for them!"
Holly, later: "You drive your own car?" "I'm proud of you!"
Creed, trying to sound out what his job is: "I shoulda written it down. Qua-something. Qua, quar, quabble, quow, quab. . .quabity! Quabity aschwitz! No. No, but I'm getting close."
Michael, making a "CD mix tape" for Holly, possibly using "Crash" by Dave Matthews Band.
Michael: "What's the group that was from Scranton that hit it big? Was that U2?"
Jim: "Yup."
Toby's affection for Pam fluctuates from sweetly adorable to a little icky. "I would love a picture of the two of us to take to Costa Rica."
Jim, after giving Phyllis money for fireworks at Toby's party: "I'm going to propose tonight. Holy crap!" Squee!
Angela shredded her list of vendors. So Phyllis slides books off Angela's desk. "Sorry."
I love it when Phyllis gets mildly mean.
I'm so glad that Michael's attempt to berate Toby is thwarted by Pam and Holly joining in, and he then has to ask his mean questions in an innocent voice. "Who do you think you are?"
Toby: "I'm. . . Toby."
Michael got Toby a rock with a note attached that says "Suck on this." And he made Dwight wrap it.
After Oscar explains Ryan's fraud: "The real crime, I think, was the beard."
Mose Schrute! He uncages a raccoon into Holly's car.
"Jan didn't believe in showing affection so sometimes I don't know how to react when a girl touches me. So. I like it!" Michael giggles.
Michael's songs include "Beers in Heaven" (which is "very sexual") and "Total Eclipse of the Fart."

Pam, about Toby: "Don't tell him I said this, but I always thought he was kinda cute." So bittersweet!
Here's the line I laughed at the most: "You cheated on me? When I specifically asked you not to?"
Jan: "If I was 22 and I had lots of time to have lots of children then sure, let's let Michael have a shot at one of 'em. But honestly, I need to make this one count."
So Andy Bernard is the one to ruin Jim's proposal to Pam by proposing to Angela!
Angela: "OK."
Andy: "Into the mike, sweetie."
Angela: "I said OK."
Aww, one of the great tragedies of The Office: Just as Michael has a not-so-weird flirtation with a woman (Holly), he learns of Jan's pregnancy and it messes everything up.
O.M.G. Phyllis happily explains that party planning gives a high, like a runner's high before walking in on Dwight and Angela doing it in the office! Discuss!

The Office Rundown: Episode 12, "Did I Stutter?"

After last week's trip to the NYC nightclub, this episode of The Office took us back to, well, the actual office. I'm generally in favor of the episodes that take place inside Dunder-Mifflin, but this one was a little strange for me - draggy in parts, then funny, then draggy again.

I do love me some Stanley, though, and this episode was a great showcase for him at his prickly, disrespectful best. His contempt for Michael really showed through. Speaking of contempt, Ryan stopped by the D-M offices with some harsh words for Jim, and Andy and Dwight displayed their manliness (sort of) by fighting over Andy's car. And we got to learn Pam's middle name and see her in her granny glasses, so those are both points in the episode's favor.

Michael slathering his face with Vaseline to make a face-print outside Dunder-Mifflin was so funny, I almost wish the writers had made it a continuing thread throughout the episode. Michael's been bugging me these days, but his delusions of grandeur always amuse. "Look, kids! Your daddy left that facehole!"
Another great part from the opening was Kelly babbling incoherently about Will Smith, Michael looking at Pam to translate, and Pam translating perfectly.
As far as I'm concerned, the writers can continue with the Pam/Jim fake proposals for quite a while (Pam/Jim proposals = the new Dwight pranks?) as long as there's a real proposal coming at some point. But anyway, Pam's middle name is Morgan, and she would energize Jim if she would just accept his proposal to . . . get him some coffee.
Michael's comments on Pam's backup glasses were about what you'd expect ("I can't hear you. It's just noise coming out of an ugly scientist.") but what really got me was Kevin's reaction. Wouldn't have pegged him for a guy with a librarian fetish, but I kept rewinding to hear him ask Pam to tell him "these are due back Thursday."

So, Stanley's never been the biggest fan of Michael, or his job, or Dunder-Mifflin in general, but has he ever been this outright insubordinate before? I forget that, considering how brilliant Michael tends to think he is as a manager, he's actually terrible at confrontation.
Loved Angela's hilarious Mad Lib, filled with enticing and juicy adjectives like "good" and "tall" and "nice." Whoa, nice? That's a walk on the wild side, Ang!
One of my favorite moments of the episode was Michael asking Daryl how he and his street gang ("Warriors . . . Newsies") dealt with conflict. At least Michael was wise enough to not actually use the "fluffy fingers."
Jim's officially on notice - w-w-w-what? Toby just trying to raise a little hell before fleeing to Costa Rica, or what?

While the whole subplot with Andy's car mostly fell into the background for me, I did enjoy his "say yes. say yes now. 5-4-3-2-1 say yes" fast-talking swindle. Dwight may not have the girl, but at least he got the car (or the profits once it sells on eBay in a fierce three-way bidding war).
I think the best thing about the episode was Phyllis telling Michael his idea was the dumbest thing she'd ever heard. Even if the whole episode was a setup for that one joke, I think it was worth it.

The Office Rundown: Episode 11, "Night Out"

Man, Ryan is a schmuck! I loved this episode of The Office in that it paired up Ryan's ridiculous cockiness with Michael's cluelessness and Dwight's bizarre social skills and set it all the "hip" environment of a nightclub.

Meanwhile, back at Dunder-Mifflin, Jim has everyone work late so they don't have to come into the office the next day. Problem: the gate out of the parking lot is locked. While trapped together, Toby makes a big announcement.

The social networking feature on the Dunder-Mifflin website was infiltrated by sexual predators, which Creed, apparently doesn't see a problem with. Ha! And: Gross.
Michael: "Jim, it's not the horniness, okay? It's the loneliness."
Dwight, remarking upon the women in the club: "They look like white slaves."
Michael: "No, they're just hot. Hotties."
When Pam asked Dwight for the spare key to the office, just in case he dies or something, "He said, if I'm dead, you guys have been dead for weeks."

Dwight, to Ryan's petite friend: "Do you live in a regular-sized house?"
Michael, on the club: "This place is like a sexy preschool."
Dwight points to the group of tall women, "How did you all find each other?" When she tells him they're a college basketball team, Dwight says simply, "Amazons."
Andy asks for a show of hands of who thinks he and Angela make a better couple than Pam and Jim.
Just FYI, the part when Pam wails the football at Meredith's head gets funnier with every repeated viewing.
After awkwardly grabbing Pam's knee, Toby announces he's going to move to Costa Rica, then, "I'm just gonna hop the fence and jog home now."
Michael: "I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I think I want her to meet my mom." Later, he's actually on the phone with his mom, at the club.
Jim: "Cleaning people. Oscar."
The collective receiving of the picture of Dwight making out with the "Amazon" is hilarious.
Dwight, in response to Ryan saying his friend has a drug problem: "I think his species might have a higher tolerance than ours."
Michael: "I've been watching The Wire lately, I don't understand a word of it."
Michael: "A famous person once said, 'Boys on the side.' But I disagree. I say, 'Let's hear it for the boys.'"

The Office Convention Just Keeps Getting Cooler

Have you booked your tickets to Scranton yet? The Office Convention is now less than two weeks away, and the lineup of visiting guests is making this event a must-attend for serious Dunder Mifflin-heads.

As of today, almost the entire supporting cast of is scheduled to attend the Oct. 26-28 events, from Creed Bratton to Angela Kinsey to Mindy Kaling (Kelly). Executive producer Greg Daniels will also be in attendance, bringing with him writers Paul Lieberstein (Toby) and Craig Robinson (Darryl). So far, it's not looking like any of the big four (Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski) will make the trip - but who needs them when you've got Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration?

The organizers have put together a truly inspired schedule of events, including a live Today Show broadcast with Al Roker, a character look-alike contest, the Office Olympics, and, yes, a Casino Night. Tickets range from $25 ("the intern") to $250 ("corporate"), with varying numbers of events, cast appearances and VIP parties included in each.

So, who's going to be Buzz's Electric City correspondent for the weekend?

The "Office" Convention is On!

Hey, "Office" fans, it's time to book your flights to Scranton. Over the weekend, as cast members Angela Kinsey and Brian Baumgartner visited the home of Dunder Mifflin, the organizers of the inaugural "Office" Convention announced that the event would be a go.

The convention is set for Oct. 26-28, 2007, and there's more information on this official site. Details on ticket prices and events will be coming later, but it sounds like landmark sites from the show will be involved. (For a primer, check out this quiz on "Office" geography - I had no idea there wasn't actually a Chili's in Scranton!) Here's what the organizers have to say about it:

"The Electric City" is celebrating the best comedy on TV by inviting Dunder-heads to converge on Northeast Pa. for a full weekend of pretending to hang out with other peoples' co-workers. Think of it like a Star Trek convention but with nerds wearing Dwight Schrute glasses instead of Spock ears.

Ain't no party like a Scranton party, indeed.
