Separated at Birth: UK Singing Soundalikes

It seems like you can't turn on the radio or surf the music blogs these days (or walk into a Starbucks, for that matter) without hearing a lady singer who is from the UK and sounds strikingly similar to Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen. It's as if all aspiring British female vocalists born between 1979 and 1991 were only given Dusty Springfield and Etta James records to listen to for inspiration.

Winehouse and Allen reintroduced the "soulful songstress with attitude and distinctive vocals" persona to the mainstream when they took the USA by storm a few years ago. However, they now appear to be imploding personally, leaving a hole in the genre that record labels have rushed to fill. I'm not complaining, as I happen to really enjoy this kind of music, but how to tell all this talent apart? There are a lot of 'em, and in addition to having similar musical styles, their names (er, um, "name," as the case may be for several of them) are hardly distinctive. It's confusing! For your benefit and mine, here's my attempt to break it all down:

According to Variety, the next Terminator movie will attempt to broaden its audience with a PG-13 rating.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has signed a huge deal with Fox that makes him the highest-paid writer-producer in television, Reuters reports.
Tom Waits has announced Summer tour dates via a bizarre faux press conference, Billboard reports.
The Hollywood Reporter has the mind-boggling news that Tristan Wilds (Michael from The Wire) is joining the cast of the 90210 spinoff. Another actor, Michael Steger, has also been cast.

Meanwhile, TV Guide has news that Brea Grant, who played Landry's rebound girl on Friday Night Lights, has been cast as a Heroes character with the power of superspeed.

West, Winehouse Win Big at 2008 Grammys

Sunday's 50th annual Grammy Awards were packed with powerful performances - including Kanye West's tribute to his mother and Beyonce's duet with Tina Turner - and musical luminaries from both the past and the present. But awards-wise, the night belonged to Amy Winehouse. Winehouse, who performed via satellite from London after being denied a visa, won five of the six awards she was nominated for, including Best New Artist and both Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Rehab."

West also had a big night, picking up four awards including Best Rap Album and performing both a stirring tribute to his mother and a glow-in-the-dark rendition of "Stronger" featuring Daft Punk's first TV appearance ever. But one of the biggest surprises came in the Album of the Year category, where both West and Winehouse were beaten by 11-time Grammy winner Herbie Hancock and his album River: The Joni Letters.

Kanye, Amy Winehouse Lead Grammy Nominations

Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, and Rihanna each swept up multiple nominations when the Grammy Award nominations were announced this morning.

West leads the field with eight nominations, including one for Album of the Year and many others in the rap performance categories. Winehouse scored six nominations, including Album, Record and Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

The Album of the Year category is an interesting one this time around, with Herbie Hancock, Vince Gill, and the Foo Fighters joining West and Winehouse. Beyonce, the Foo Fighters, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Winehouse will square off for Record of the Year.

The most pleasant surprise: Four nominations for my gal Feist, including Best New Artist. The awards - the Grammys' 50th - will be presented Feb. 10.

"American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks' first album is due in November, the Associated Press reports; her first single, "Tattoo," will be released Aug. 27.
Variety has news of Djimon Houndsou and Dakota Fanning signing on to star together in a thriller titled Push.
ABC has set dates for two relatively high-profile TV movies, the latest Oprah movie and an adaptation of A Raisin in the Sun, Zap2it reports.

The nominees for the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards were announced today, and Justin Timberlake and Beyonce claimed their spots at the head of the pack with seven nominations each. Kanye West and Rihanna weren't far behind with five each, and Amy Winehouse and her famous hair picked up three nods. Those five artists will face off in the Video of the Year category, along with French duo Justice, whose "D.A.N.C.E." scored a surprise nomination.

This year, viewers get to pick the winner in the Best New Artist category, choosing between Lily Allen, Gym Class Heroes, Peter Bjorn and John, Carrie Underwood and Amy Winehouse. MTV also added a couple of new categories: Earthshattering Collaboration and Quadruple Threat, the latter of which recognizes artists who excel in multiple fields.

The Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from Las Vegas on Sept. 9, with a slate of performers that so far includes Timberlake, Kanye, Rihanna, Winehouse, Timbaland, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown, the Foo Fighters and Lily Allen - as long as she still has a visa, presumably.
