American Idol: Who Deserves to Get Cut This Week?

It's top six week on American Idol and with the promise of final five-status looming, things are getting serious - but you wouldn't know that by all the fun the contestants seemed to be having belting out awesome Queen classics! For real, everyone was on top of their game. At this point in the season, everyone has had enough stage time to get comfortable and they've all developed and defined their styles, which means it's going to be even more tragic to see another hopeful let go. But before we get to that, let's go over the performances.

The finalists opened the show with "We Are The Champions," and while it may be true, I can't help but feel like it must have rubbed salt in the wounds of the most recent cast-offs. Jessica Sanchez followed up with "Bohemian Rhapsody," Skylar Laine continued to impress with "The Show Must Go On," and Joshua Ledet was better than ever on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Elise was great at "I Want It All," but I felt like so many weeks in the bottom has knocked the sparkle out of her eyes. Phillip Phillips loves his "Fat Bottomed Girls" and Hollie Cavanagh took on "Save Me." And that was just the first half of the show. Grace Kelly would have turned 82 this weekend. The late star is making a movie comeback, as a film project titled Grace of Monaco is officially in the works. The screenplay reportedly follows Princess Grace's royal life against a backdrop of current events. Almost 30 years since her tragic death in a car accident, the world is still fascinated by the Academy Award winner who went from Hollywood royalty to European royalty.

At the young age of 26, the American actress retired from acting to move to Monaco and become a princess. She had met Prince Rainier, the sovereign of Monaco, in April 1955 while at the Cannes Film Festival. A year later they were married in an event broadcast across Europe. Today, Grace Kelly still holds icon status. From her timeless wedding dress, to her glamorous style, to her intriguing personal life, she's left a lasting legacy. Take a look at it now.

Shakespeare Is the Real Father of Adolescence

With tweens and extended adolescence now a part of our vocabulary, it's easy to forget that adolescence didn't always exist. It's only been acknowledged in Western culture for the last 50 or so years. You were a child until you weren't. One defining birthday -13, 16, or 18 - changed everything from clothes to the quotidian details of daily life. It wasn't until the '50s and '60s that youth culture became a beat too loud to ignore, and adolescence finally gained acceptance outside psychology.

American psychologist Stanley Hall is credited with defining adolescence in 1904, but it was popularized by psychologist Erik Erickson's stages of psychosocial development in the mid-20th century. Erickson pinpointed the stage's crisis, calling identity vs. role confusion, and argued why it should be seen as a unique period in life. "It is human to have a long childhood; it is civilized to have an even longer childhood," he famously wrote. "Long childhood makes a technical and mental virtuoso out of man, but it also leaves a life-long residue of emotional immaturity in him."

But this week's New York Times Magazine posits a new theory: Shakespeare was the first person to characterize adolescent absurdity, particularly in Romeo and Juliet. Whether anyone acknowledged it our not, Shakespeare created a whole new category of life out of the star-crossed lovers, filled with wonder, exaggeration, and despair - great melodrama.

He captured the tension Erickson would later categorize by illuminating the choice every human has between childhood and adulthood. Go down senselessly but in a tragic blaze of glory like Romeo and Juliet, or grow up and develop a sense of humor, much like Shakespeare did.

Outside Lands: Sandwiches Behind the Scenes

San Francisco's Outside Lands Music Festival isn't just about the tunes - food and drink play a big part, too. Case in point: the sandwich offerings, as documented by Between the Bread.
I have yet to dine at Maverick or Flour + Water, though both are on my list. So in between catching sets by MGMT, The Roots, Vetiver, Mavis Staples, Beirut, and many more at this weekend's Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park, I sampled sandwich offerings from these two must-eat San Francisco eateries.

I love that Outside Lands eschews typical festival fare for booths from local restaurants, including my beloved Phil'z Coffee, Andalu, Memphis Minnie's, Namu, and on and on.
