'80s Throwback! 10 Movies That Pay Homage to the Decade

Who doesn't love a good '80s movie? The shoulder pads, the hair bands, the abnormally large cell phones - many Hollywood films have tried to recreate the feeling of the era through film, including this week's release Take Me Home Tonight. The film's cast already had fun re-enacting classic '80s film scenes, but it got me thinking about other films that pay tribute to the beloved decade. Here are 10 of the most memorable!

It's a strange experience when you realize you're enjoying a movie more than you enjoyed the book on which it's based because so often the opposite is true. After all, presumably an author has the advantage because he/she can provide deep insight into characters that actors have to convey with but a glance. Some of us at Sugar just got new business cards, and as we were debating the merits of matte finish vs. semiglossy, TeamSugar reminded me about the (highly entertaining) business-card scene in (the otherwise quite disturbing) American Psycho. Salon Uses Domestic Violence Imagery to Advertise

Up in the Great White North, an ad campaign for an Edmonton salon is stirring up controversy. The above advertisement for Fluid Salon, part of its "Look Good in All You Do" campaign, depicts a battered woman and an American Psycho-style man holding a sparkling necklace. Sure, she might have a black eye, but at least her hair is styled! Ugh. After Copyranter called out the ad for its domestic violence theme, a flurry of criticism followed.

The salon's response? Get over it, basically, and stop picking on us. It's art, Fluid creative consultant Tiffany Johnson writes, adding that boycotting the salon won't stop domestic violence. It's a non sequitur, though; nobody's saying that domestic violence will end if people stop going to Fluid. Instead, critics argue that using a "hot battered woman" (the salon owner's words) makes light of the partner violence faced by one in four women. Sure, Fluid has the right to advertise any way it wants, but people have just as much right to comment on it - and judging by the uproar, Fluid is finding this out the hard way.

But somehow, the line based out of LA has become super fly, for the best reasons: the shades are really well-made and always seem to hone in on just the right shape. So just who is Oliver Peoples? We spoke with founder and creative director Larry Leight to get some good dirt on this quietly awesome brand. Here are five things you didn't know:

Oliver Peoples was a man before a brand
In 1986, optician Larry Leight purchased an estate collection of vintage, American-made eyewear, which included beautiful filigreed frames and clip-ons from the American machine age. With this purchase was a receipt signed by "Oliver Peoples," who was presumed to be the original owner. According to the estate seller, the man had no known living family, so Larry decided to name the store (and later the wholesale company) Oliver Peoples in his honor.
