Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin to Host the Oscars - Together!

Earlier today I was sad to hear that Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller had turned down an offer to host the Oscars together, but the biggest awards show of the year has landed an equally hilarious duo: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin! The comedians will team up to take over for Hugh Jackman, and I'm already giddy thinking about the high jinks that will ensue. I love that we're getting two well-seasoned vets in the humor department (a la Billy Crystal), and we've already seen how great these guys are together after Steve's guest appearance on 30 Rock last season.

So many questions come to mind: Will there be duets? Dance numbers? (Man, I hope so). Are you excited for dual hosting duties or are you worried that we'll get another harried repeat of the 2008 Emmys?

Just yesterday I was talking about how Chris Pine is blowing up after the big success of Star Trek, and his name is already making headlines again this morning. Pine will likely be the next actor to take on the role of Jack Ryan in the next film adaption of the popular Tom Clancy novels. A few actors have taken on the role in the past, and other names have been attached to the project before, so let's take a look at the evolution of Jack Ryan - with a few of my own suggestions for who could take on the role.

Alec Baldwin is taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 30 Rock for the second year in a row. He beat out Tony Shalhoub, Charlie Sheen, Jemaine Clement, and Jim Parsons.

Movie Preview: Streep, Martin, and Baldwin in It's Complicated

Though I truly love Father of the Bride and Baby Boom, I'm starting to think that the projects coming from writer/director Nancy Meyers in these later years of her career (like Something's Gotta Give) are only as strong as her casts. And even then, the actors can only do so much. This latest movie from Meyers, It's Complicated, looks cute enough, if a little bland, and it seems to benefit tremendously from the lovable Meryl Streep in the lead role.

Streep plays a divorced woman who starts to have feelings for her remarried exhusband (Alec Baldwin) just as a sweet single man (Steve Martin) takes a shine to her. It's perhaps an ordinary love triangle rom-com, but I like that it features older characters who have already gone through heartache and divorce. Still, I hope the movie in its entirety is more interesting than the trailer makes it seem. My favorite part includes Streep and Martin's characters, um, getting a little silly.

My Sister's Keeper: Climb Aboard the Weepy Express

In My Sister's Keeper, young Anna knows that she was genetically engineered and brought into this world in order to serve as a donor for her ailing sister, Kate. Well, My Sister's Keeper was engineered to make people cry - over and over and over again, for two hours. Anna sues her parents for medical emancipation, and by the end of this movie I wanted to file for emotional emancipation.

Anna (played sweetly by Abigail Breslin) was conceived after her parents, Sara (Cameron Diaz) and Brian (Jason Patric), learned that their young daughter Kate (the teenage version played by Sofia Vassilieva) had leukemia and their other child, Jesse (Evan Ellingson), was not a perfect match to be a donor for his sister. Throughout her life Anna has been required to give all sorts of things from her body to help keep Kate alive and now, at the age of 11, Anna finds a lawyer (Alec Baldwin) to sue her parents for medical emancipation. The lawsuit comes at a critical time: Kate's kidneys are failing, and without one of Anna's kidneys, Kate will die - soon. The story unfolds in a series of flashbacks that fill in some blanks about the family's journey up until this point. The flashbacks are interspersed with scenes of the present-day situation as Kate's condition worsens and Sara, a former lawyer, prepares to fight her youngest daughter in court. This drama is, of course, very moving. It centers around a kid with cancer! Of course there's inherent sadness just within that plot, and essentially, nothing more is really needed to make most people feel. But My Sister's Keeper takes this story and milks it for all its worth, stretching out heart-wrenching scene after heart-wrenching scene. I don't fault the movie for being sad, and I don't even think it's that poorly done, but it could have benefited greatly from some strong editing. Despite trying to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short period of time (we hear perspectives from each character - including quite a bit from Kate herself), the movie drags on languorously in many parts, and I just wanted to yell at the screen that we get it. It's sad. We're crying. There's so much more to this story, please move on!

At first, it takes a little while to warm up to these people - particularly so with Diaz's Sara, not because her character is a tough cookie but because Diaz is so shrill at times it's hard to take her seriously. I wondered if this role was too heavy for her to handle; there's just something insubstantial about the way she portrays Sara. It doesn't ruin the movie, but I still wish they'd cast someone else in that role. Sofia Vassilieva's performance as Kate is well done and requires a delicate touch that Vassilieva capably displays - she's sympathetic as a cancer patient, of course, but she also convincingly plays another side of Kate: a giggly, sometimes insecure teenage girl who wants to date boys and look pretty.

I knew going into this that my emotions would be manipulated, and they really do pull out all the stops - including the use of a heartbreaking song every eight minutes or so (like Greg Laswell's slow, haunting version of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"). But even with all the music and all the horrors of cancer, by the end of the film, the sweet and complex bonds between these parents and these siblings are what deliver the gut-punch that forces the tears to start flowing.

TV Tonight: 30 Rock

What's more awkward than going to your high school reunion? Going to your high school reunion with your boss. That's what happens on tonight's 30 Rock, when Jack persuades Liz to go to her reunion - and then tags along for the ride.

It's a fairly serious episode by 30 Rock standards, which mostly just means it's depressing-funny rather than goofy-funny - all the usual little asides and one-liners are still there, and I've been using a few of them in my daily life ever since I first saw the episode last week. We get to see what Liz was like in high school, which is hilarious for a number of reasons, most of which would be too spoilery to reveal. And there's some good, meaty Jack stuff, as Don Geiss awakens from his coma to determine Jack's future with GE.

And yes, this is the episode that was supposed to have a couple of Gossip Girls as guest stars. Sadly, that never came to be - but Blake Lively's sister, Robyn Lively, does turn up as Liz's old high school nemesis (though you might not recognize her under her awful wig - she's on the right in the picture above). TV Tonight: 30 Rock Returns!

Jeez, it's about time 30 Rock came back. Since the NBC comedy was last on the air, it's picked up a passel of Emmys, and its creator and star, Tina Fey, has gotten wildly famous for her side job as Sarah Palin. Which is all well and good, of course - it's just been quite the wait to see the 30 Rock gang together again, doing what they do best.

In tonight's premiere episode, the first of many guest stars (Megan Mullally) drops by the set of The Girlie Show to evaluate whether Fey's Liz Lemon is a good candidate for adoption, prompting Liz to try to convince her coworkers to act normal. Good luck with that. Also, Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) returns from his brief stint in DC to resume his position at the network, putting him toe-to-toe with Devin Banks (Will Arnett), whom Fey recently revealed is based on real NBC entertainment chairman Ben Silverman.

Things really heat up next week, when Oprah makes her highly anticipated guest appearance as Liz Lemon's aisle-mate on a flight. Steve Martin, the whole cast of Night Court, and Jennifer Aniston will be by later in this season, but for tonight, I'll take any 30 Rock I can get. Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin to Fight Over Meryl Streep

I love this news: Steve Martin is joining the cast of the untitled Nancy Meyers movie that will star Meryl Streep (I've already expressed how much I'm looking forward to this project). What's more, his character will duke it out (maybe not physically, though I would love to see that) with Alec Baldwin's character to win the affections of the main lady (Streep).

I'm not always a fan of Meyers's work (What Women Want, oy) but she reliably attracts some top-notch talent. Her movies have lured Jack Nicholson, Kate Winslet, Diane Keaton (a few times), Helen Hunt, and Steve Martin (Father of the Bride!), among others. Mixing it up this time with Alec Baldwin and placing the ever-charming Meryl Streep front and center seems like a recipe for awesome.
