Jack and Jill: A Comedy That Heads Downhill

We all have that obnoxious relative we dread having to spend time with over the holidays. For ad executive Jack Sadelstein (Adam Sandler) in Jack and Jill, that relative is twin sister Jill (again, Adam Sandler), who visits her brother every Thanksgiving. Jill looks forward to spending time with Jack and his wife Erin (played by Katie Holmes in a sweet but bland role), as well as their two children every year. But Jill is harder to get along with, as she is loud (and she travels with an even louder pet cockatiel), incredibly needy, and she takes the time to point out others' flaws. It's no wonder Jack hates spending time with her, but it begs the question: If he doesn't want to, why should we? The answer, of course, is we shouldn't.

The fact that the film's humor rests on the novelty of seeing Sandler dressed as a woman should serve as a clue to the type of lazy humor you are going to get with this movie. Throwing a wig on Sandler and hearing him speak in a high-pitched voice isn't that funny, and neither are a lot of the jokes. Sundance Snapshot: Channing Tatum Shows His Chops in The Son of No One

Though my time at the Sundance Film Festival is winding down, I've still got plenty of goodies to share with you all. The Son of No One piqued my interest for its star-studded cast, and though the cop thriller wasn't my favorite of the festival's offerings, it's not without its merits. Here's how the film measures up.

Who's behind it? Dito Montiel (Fighting, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) wrote and directed the film, which stars Channing Tatum, Katie Holmes, Al Pacino, and Tracy Morgan.
What's it about? The film captures two different times in the life of Jonathan White (Tatum). In 2002, he's living in Staten Island with his wife (Holmes) and young daughter. He commutes two hours a day to work as a rookie in the police force, and his personal life and career are put into peril when he starts receiving threatening messages about his haunting past. The other half of the movie shows Jonathan as a young boy living in the projects, and the audience soon learns that the older Jonathan has some serious skeletons in his closet that could destroy everything he's built.

To see where the film impressed me, just

The Son of No One is a run-of-the-mill cop thriller. The film is largely focused on themes we've seen before like police corruption and post-9/11 repercussions, and like many other films of its genre, it values violence over character enrichment. Though it doesn't break any new ground, it's still engaging as both a thriller and a mystery. The script could have benefited from more character development, particularly for Katie Holmes, who does little more than toss glaring looks and accusations at Tatum. With that said, I was impressed with Tatum's performance as Jonathan. As the film's leading man, Tatum brings enough intensity and compassion to carry the film. Tracy Morgan's serious turn as a troubled friend from Jonathan's past also caught my attention: it's not a big enough role to really stand up and take notice, but it definitely left me wanting to see more of Morgan outside of his 30 Rock bubble.

Gael Garcia Bernal better get ready to hit the gym, because the actor's next role is going to require some serious training. He's set to play Roberto Duran in Hands of Stone, an upcoming biopic about the famous boxer (who often faced off with Sugar Ray Leonard). Al Pacino is also in talks to play his trainer. The film hasn't been fully greenlit yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed to see Bernal sink his teeth into something more high profile than his usual fare. Now, who can Diego Luna play?

Film Trifecta: Al Pacino Eyes Role With De Niro, Scorsese

Hollywood is bringing together its acting dream team (and no, I'm not talking about The Expendables). Al Pacino is reportedly circling a film with fellow heavyweights Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese; Scorsese regular Joe Pesci may also join the project. Titled The Irishman, the script follows the story of hitman Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran as told in the book I Heard You Paint Houses. So yes, it's a mobster drama - what else would you expect from these four?

George, January, and the Modern Family Gang Move the Emmys Party to the Press Room

The action in LA moved last night from the stage at the Emmys on to the press room, where the big winners showed off their new gold. Humanitarian honoree George Clooney led the pack by speaking about Brad Pitt's equally good deeds, and Tom Hanks toasted his HBO miniseries The Pacific. Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston, meanwhile, had dual wins for Breaking Bad. An excited Aaron gushed about the surprise, saying he lost his mind due to the shock. Nurse Jackie's Edie Falco, who was declared Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, still maintained that she's not even funny. The ensemble cast of Mad Men was led by January Jones, the adorable young actress Kiernan Shipka, Christina Hendricks, and Elisabeth Moss. Their series's creator, Matthew Weiner, said a few words and assured fans their show isn't going anywhere just yet.

Eric Stonestreet celebrated with the Modern Family gang and commented that it won't be weird on set after he picked up a Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy nod over two of his costars. Claire Danes was solo on stage to gush about her win for Temple Grandin. The stars were soon off to make the afterparty rounds, so stay tuned to get the inside scoop from across Hollywood! George Clooney, True Blood Trio, and Date Night For TV Stars at the Primetime Emmys

Jimmy Fallon provided lots of laughs and tunes at tonight's Primetime Emmy Awards while TV stars graced the stage in gorgeous gowns with great-looking guys. Between the fun star-studded opening (yes that was Kate Gosselin getting dissed) and Jimmy's farewell to 24, Lost and Law and Order, he kept the show rolling as we eagerly awaited George Clooney's humanitarian moment. Big winners of the evening including Modern Family, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad.

It was date night for January Jones, who sat in the front row with Jason Sudeikis, Anna Paquin, who held on tight to her husband Steven Moyer, while presenting with Alexander Skarsgard, as well as for George Clooney who had Elisabetta Canalis by his side backstage. Costars Tina Fey and Steve Carell bonded even though neither of their shows was recognized this year. Betty White continues to be everywhere and after a hilarious dance opening with Jon Hamm, the two presented the first award of the evening. Eric Stonestreet, Jane Lynch, and Kyra Sedgwick were some of our favorite winners of the night. Kyra took home the Emmy for lead actress in a drama after being nominated for five consecutive years!
