Fox to Remake Absolutely Fabulous for the US

I imagine Edina and Patsy would have a few choice words to say about this.
Fox is looking to remake the British comedy Absolutely Fabulous. This new version of the comedy would be set in LA but attempt to retain the essential flavor of "the friendship of two boozy, over-40 best friends who are desperate to stay hip and youthful."

But . . . why?
Alas, that may be the question with no answer. It's not the first attempt at an Ab Fab remake, though: Oddly, Roseanne once wanted to do a remake with Carrie Fisher in one of the lead roles. And if you remember the 1995 CBS sitcom High Society (I don't), apparently it was in essence a US ripoff.

Are there any bright spots here?
Well, maybe. Arrested Development's Mitchell Hurwitz is involved as an executive producer. And the show's being done with the blessing of Jennifer Saunders, who created the British original (and played Edina) and will also produce this one.

Could this possibly work?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to the titles below you can now rent the fourth film in the Rambo franchise, simply titled Rambo, and Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream, starring Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell.

Absolutely Fabulous - Absolutely Everything
"Is it Lacroix Darling? I'll love it if it's Lacroix." - Edina Monsoon. While it might not be Lacroix, it's certainly the next best thing. That's because this Absolutely Fabulous box set, just like its title, has absolutely everything. For a series previously available by season only, this box set compiles every episode from 1992 to 2005.

The British comedy follows Edina, who owns a public relations firm, and her best friend Patsy, who doesn't do much of anything. The duo is consumed by the latest fads and fashion and obsessed with regularly putting drugs and booze - and little else! - into their bodies. Edina's daughter Saffron provides the motherly voice of reason for the out-of-control spinsters. Ab Fab is definitely an acquired taste, but if you are a fan of British humor, I recommend the purchase.

Lipstick Jungle
I can't believe this is on DVD already! The first season of NBC's Lipstick Jungle (which just concluded at the end of March) focuses on three New York City women striving for success. Brooke Shields stars as Wendy Healy, a movie exec trying to juggle her family life and career. Her friends Nico (Kim Raver) and Victory (Lindsay Price) round out the ensemble as a magazine editor and fashion designer, respectively. The show is based on a novel by Candace Bushnell, who also wrote Sex and the City and our current book club selection, Four Blondes.

Grace is Gone
Grace is Gone stars John Cusack as a widowed husband whose wife dies while serving in Iraq. The film centers on his struggle to tell his two daughters that their mom has died, which he delays doing by taking the girls to an amusement park.

The film did well at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival (where it won the Audience Award in the dramatic category) and it pulled in a very respectable $4 million by The Weinstein Company. I haven't yet seen it, but I'm always up for a John Cusack film and he's supposedly excellent in this one.

What are the Top Cult TV Shows of All Time?

Some TV shows have fans. Others have fanatics. They dissect every moment of the series, learn to speak Klingon, even send tons of nuts to the network when they hear their show is in danger. Those are the cult shows, and TV Guide has just released its updated list of the top 30 cult shows of all time.

It's a broad list, spanning comedy ("Absolutely Fabulous"), drama ("Freaks and Geeks") and sci fi ("Star Trek," unsurprisingly taking the No. 1 spot). I always think of "cult" shows as being low-rated and obsessed over by only a very small group, but the TV Guide list takes a broader definition, putting "Lost" and "The Simpsons" on the list. At first, I was taken aback - can a cult show also be one of the most popular shows on TV? - but then I thought about all the "Lost" backwards scenes I've watched and all the times I've been stuck in a car with people who only speak in "Simpsons" quotes, and I decided they deserved their spots.

But on the other hand, there were some pretty surprising exclusions. I think "The Office" has all the hallmarks of a cult show: It's low-rated, but you'd never know it from the way its fans obsess over it, and I think having a convention automatically qualifies a show as cult-like. "My So-Called Life," which made the first list three years ago, has apparently "not withstood the test of time" - though given the reaction to the news of a DVD release, I bet some of you would beg to differ. "Arrested Development" has a particularly devoted, die-hard fan base that continues to mourn the show long after its cancellation - words that could also apply to "The State" and "Kids in the Hall."
