Sunday Funnies: 30 Rock's Kenneth Raps "Top That"

If you could draw a Venn diagram with cheesy '80s movie lovers in one circle and 30 Rock fans in the other, I'm pretty sure the intersection would be this week's "Senor Macho Solo" episode, which featured the endearingly dweeby Kenneth Parcells (Jack McBrayer) rapping the "Top That" song from Teen Witch. Only this time, I'm pretty sure nobody was exclaiming, "I'm so embarrassed. Look how funky he is!" Here's the clip:

Ashley Tisdale As the Teen Witch? Who Should "Top That"?

OK, putting aside for a moment how much I so thoroughly can't imagine Teen Witch being palatable outside of the 1980s - even more so than most of the remakes being done these days - I am curious about the casting for it. Apparently, High School Musical's Ashley Tisdale may take on the role of Louise Miller, "the unpopular girl who discovers that she's a descendant of witches - and possesses powers" in a remake of the 1989 flick.

The original Louise Miller was played by Robyn Lively, and if they have to move forward with this project, why not keep it in the family and cast Robyn's sister, Blake Lively of Gossip Girl? At least that would be sort of funny. Or something.

However, there's a bigger question at hand: Who will play Louise's rap-happy best girlfriend? If you're unsure of what this role entails, please, for the love of all things holy, watch the "Top That" clip from Teen Witch after the jump. You may never be the same again.

What's Buzzworthy? Guilty-Pleasure '80s Movies

Today, I launched a new feature on BuzzSugar called Defend This, where I ask you guys to justify your so-bad-it's-good fixations. So I thought I'd devote this week's Buzzworthy challenge to guilty pleasure '80s movies. My top pick has got to be Mannequin, starring Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall, and, of course, Estelle Getty. I rented it so often as a kid that my parents often felt the need to remind me that most people prefer to rent movies they haven't seen. (A close second: Teen Witch.)

My Little Pony Trotting Back to TV

The beloved '80s toy turned movie turned TV show, My Little Pony, is getting resurrected with a series set to air on the new Discovery-Hasbro kids channel.

Makes sense since My Little Pony is a Hasbro creation, but I have mixed feelings over this news. I was nutty for the toys growing up - I even had a tiny plastic pony tent that I used to pitch in my living room. And while I'm glad to see an old familiar friend make a comeback, I hope they don't turn it into some newfangled 2.0 version meant to look more slick, like so many other cartoons nowadays. Don't mess with a classic, people!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Sequel Confirmed

If it's bad, it'll just be drawn that way: '80s animated/live action classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is getting a sequel, 21 years after its release.

The film's director, Bob Zemeckis, has confirmed that a Roger Rabbit sequel is moving forward, and the original screenwriters are working on a script. Zemeckis is looking forward to using digital tools to update this new installment, which makes me wonder just how different this movie will look from the 1988 original. There are also no details yet on the plot or which characters will be returning - though I assume that Roger and Jessica Rabbit will be back, not having aged a cartoon day.

I'm very curious about this project, considering that the original director and writer are on board, but I wonder if the same humor will hold up; it could either be a total disaster, or a modernized take on the movie. What do you think of this news?

Katie Holmes to Sip Cocktails on Broadway?

Sometimes it feels like everything comes full circle: Cocktail is coming to Broadway and Katie Holmes is in talks to star in it. The good news is that Heywood Gould, the man behind the original book and movie is working on the theater adaptation, but will it succeed on the Great White Way? I have a soft spot for the cheesy '80s flick, but my first reaction is that this could go more of the way of Big: The Musical (which kind of failed) than smash hit Hairspray.

Adam Shankman to Direct Rock of Ages Movie Musical

Sometimes I forget that So You Think You Can Dance's Adam Shankman is also heavily involved in the movie biz - he directed 2007's remake Hairspray and recently produced 17 Again. Now the booty shakin' judge just scored a deal to direct and choreograph another movie musical, the Broadway hit Rock of Ages.

The stage show debuted in 2006 and revolves around the hits of '80s glam/hair/metal rock bands. It boosted the career of former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis, but he may not be reprising his role: Shankman remarked, "I'm thinking big, and absolutely am going to attempt to cast with movie stars. Now that musicals are working again, actors are much more open to it."

I've never seen the show, but I just read the listing of songs (think Journey and Bon Jovi) and now I'm dying to see it on stage and on the big screen. If you've seen it, what big names could you see starring?
