Tampon Ads Can't Tackle What TV's Been Doing For Decades

Tampon ads are filled with euphemisms, and feature women in varying shades of white frolicking outdoors. Nobody knows their secret, and really that's all anyone's ever asked of a tampon. But now Kotex is stirring things up with a new campaign called Break the Cycle. It parodies typical feminine-product commercials by talking openly and frankly about periods. Too frankly for TV. The New York Times reports three networks rejected the ad, and only one of those networks accepted it after the word "vagina" was switched out for "down there."

Now that a company is finally trying to challenge the status quo, and maybe peddle what it believes are the finest applicators around, television won't have it. Yet TV shows have been doing a better job talking about periods for years. Here are clips from three shows - Blossom, 7th Heaven, and The Cosby Show - that, despite overuse of the word "woman," do a remarkable job of talking about menstruation.

Which Long-Running Show Will You Miss Most?

"Gilmore Girls" isn't the only long-running show saying goodbye this season. "The King of Queens" wrapped up nine years on the air on Monday, and "7th Heaven" completed its 11-year run on Sunday. "The O.C." ended after four seasons earlier this year, and NBC isn't bringing "Crossing Jordan" back for a seventh season. So it seems like the right time to ask: Which long-running, now-canceled show will you be missing most come fall?

TV Tonight: "7th Heaven"

I admit there was a time in my life when I was a wee bit obsessed with "7th Heaven." Sure, there was very little realistic about the Camdens, but their sappy sweetness was comforting, in a way. So I'm glad that things will be ending well for the Rev and his family when the series wraps up tonight. Yes, the show also had a series finale last year before the newly formed CW decided to bring it back, but for the record, the cast seems to like this series finale better. With commercials showing the Camdens picking up an RV, it looks like there's a good chance they'll literally be driving off into the sunset. Lauren Graham is relieved that "Gilmore Girls" is ending, according to her interview with TV Guide.
Avril Lavigne has big plans now that her single has been No. 1 for two weeks straight: a new music video, summer shows and film work, reports Billboard.
The production company behind the Saw movies is producing a horror film that will only be released online, tentatively titled The Internet Killer, Variety says.
The "American Idol" producers won't be running the Emmys after all, USA Today reports.

Spring Cleaning Sends Heap of TV Shows to the Dump

Hope you weren't getting too attached to "The Wedding Bells" or "Six Degrees." They were two of the shows axed this week as the networks reshuffled their schedules. Among the other casualties: "The Black Donnellys," which might only get to air two more episodes, and "7th Heaven," which is being canceled (supposedly for real this time). According to Variety, the networks said low ratings were behind all of the decisions.

Here's a summary of the changes:

"The Wedding Bells" will air this Friday but is unlikely to be back after that.
"The Black Donnellys" will get bumped from its time slot on April 23 to make way for "The Real Wedding Crashers." It's unclear if NBC intends to pull "Donnellys" completely before the 23rd or air the remaining episodes at another time; it only will have aired eight of its 13 episodes by then.
"Six Degrees" is done, effective immediately, and - for the moment, at least - it will be replaced by episodes of "Wife Swap" (hey, at least it's not more "George Lopez").
"7th Heaven" is scheduled to air its finale on May 13.

There's some good news for fans of "October Road": The show was only going to get to air four of its six episodes, but it's doing well enough that ABC is planning to let it finish out the season on Thursdays at 10. It will take a one-week break April 12 to make way for the premiere of "Notes from the Underbelly," but then "Notes" will move to Wednesdays at 8:30.

The CW's "Hidden Palms," which sounds like "Desperate Housewives" crossed with "Dawson's Creek," also finally got a time slot, and it will start May 30 at 8 p.m.

Josh Groban makes his debut as Andy Bernard's little brother, Walter Jr., on this week's episode of The Office. Groban took the time to talk to reporters about his new character, the rivalry between Walter Jr. and his older brother, and why he sometimes wishes the Bernard family patriarch, Stephen Collins, was his actual father. Plus, he filled us in on how he landed the gig.

Walter Jr. Stole Andy's Name
"Andy is the firstborn, which is usually, I think, probably the favorite son, but for whatever reason being the secondborn somehow I kind of stole his name from him. He was originally going to be Walter Jr., but they made me Walter Jr., and he kind of wound up being a little bit more of the happy-go-lucky, very successful, almost kind of fell up in a way."
He Geeked Out Over Visiting Schrute Farms
"I was very, very honored [to visit Schrute Farms]. I did not take it lightly for sure. I was actually kind of surprised they didn’t put a blindfold on me on the van ride over because it feels like one of those very kind of top secret TV land locations. But when we pulled in, as a fan of the show, it was really, really fun to see. And also it was great to see the actual house on Schrute Farms. Everything that you see on the show, none of that feels like a set when you’re there. It’s a beautiful piece of land and what they’ve done, the prop department people who have created that house, it’s all to scale, and to be able to walk in and be able to see all the Schrute portraits on the wall, and the pictures from his childhood and the oil painting of his grandfather next to the Kiss poster, like it’s just like they haven’t left any stone unturned as far as his character and what that property means for his character. As a fan of the show it was really, really cool to see."

"I definitely will treasure the family portrait that was taken on set. We got to take a picture where it was me and Ed [Helms] and Stephen [Collins], and all of standing there, and Dee Wallace of course, who plays our mom, who is amazing. "The complicated thing right now is that I’m actually on tour. "Stephen Collins, you know, I’ve watched his work in the past and everybody’s seen him in 7th Heaven and all those shows, and he’s kind of like the ultimate dad. When you watch him at work, he’s kind of the dad you wish was your side dad, no matter how great you think your family is. Like, you want him as your weekend dad. He’s a cool dude and when I met him off set, there’s something about him that is so calm and collected, but he has a really dry wit. Just hanging out with him, we were working on some of our song harmonies and things like that. He, first of all, has an amazing voice. Not to give any spoilers, but I think people will kind of realize that the musical inspiration in the family started with him. There’s a little bit of a Von Trapp family atmosphere in his world in the show.

"I think to a certain extent I am kind of as shy in garden party situations as Walter is, and I think to a certain extent, any of us who have achieved a certain amount of success kind of feel like we’ve worked for it, and also feel to a certain extent like we were given wonderful opportunities and wonderful open doors to walk through. The Vampire Diaries "The Birthday": The Good, the Bad, and the Bloody

The Vampire Diaries is back! The series marked its return with a birthday party, a highly anticipated sex scene, and a sadistic new personality for Stefan. While Elena and Damon are left in Mystic Falls, Stefan is off gallivanting as Klaus's puppet, partying it up and dismembering the occasional Southern belle.
