Enroll in "Film School" With TCM's 31 Days of Oscar

The annual 31 Days of Oscar festival on Turner Classic Movies is always a great way to catch up on great films I might have missed, but this year it might also teach me something new. This year's Oscar celebration - which starts Feb. 1 and goes through March 3 - is divided up like a college curriculum, with "departments" like Zoology and Communications and courses of study including Shakespeare's Tragedies, Advanced Ballet, and Contemporary Issues in Mass Media.

It's really a trip to look through all the different movies that fall under each "course." Genetics has The Parent Trap, among others, while Bedknobs and Broomsticks falls under Aerodynamics. Dr. Strangelove, naturally, is covered under Nuclear Physics, and The Graduate is a key component of Contemporary Moral Issues.

It's a pretty clever spin on an old tradition, I think. The full list of films on the docket is over here, and to see a few of the "courses" I might enroll in myself, just

TCM Kicks Off Oscar Month; Coincidentally, So Do We

One of my favorite things about February - other than the great things I've got to have - is the Oscar countdown on Turner Classic Movies. The network kicks off its annual 31 Days of Oscar event today, and from now into March, they'll broadcast Oscar-winning and Oscar-worthy fare virtually around the clock.

This is a great way to catch up on all the movies I've been waitflixing or have been meaning to watch for years. The schedule is divided into two sections - daytime and primetime - with a different set of movies for each part. Each day's daytime movies all fit a specific theme (today's is adventure, Sunday's is musicals), while the primetime hours take on movies from a specific decade - Mondays for films of the '20s and '30s, Tuesdays for the '40s, and so forth. All the movies are listed on the mind-boggling printable schedule, which you can find from this site.

And hey, if TCM is doing it, why can't we? We've already gotten into the Oscar spirit, but expect a lot more Oscar goodness starting today, including Oscar-themed movie nights, quizzes, photo galleries, and other features. Stay tuned!

Hope Springs Trailer: Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones Spice Things Up

As she's proved time and time again, Meryl Streep is a pro. Just ask her cabinet of Oscars, Emmys, and Golden Globes. But in the new trailer for Hope Springs it appears her character Maeve has lost her touch, or at least she has with Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones), her hubby of 31 years. After concluding that their marriage has lost its spark, Maeve and Arnold head to Great Hope Springs for an intensive couples therapy retreat, led by Dr. Bernie Field (Steve Carell). Along the road to reconciliation, the two encounter roadblocks, hijinks, and a banana.

Many Meryl Streep fans might be excited about this movie, but if this trailer were a person, I would be like "TMI, man." I know Jones was hot back in the day, but I do not want to picture him having a threesome with Streep and their neighbor. Having said that, the non-sexy stuff does look pretty cute, and given that it's being directed by David Frankel, who was behind 2006's The Devil Wears Prada and 2008's Marley & Me, it might be one of the feel-good movies of the Summer. Hope Springs comes out August 10, so watch the preview after the jump.
