When Departures (Okuribito in Japanese) won the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film, it took a lot of people by surprise — including the film's director Yojiro Takita. Takita (who used to direct porn comedies?) apparently didn't even prepare an acceptance speech.
After all that awards excitement, I'm excited to check out the trailer.

Not even Oscar host Hugh Jackman got to see all the nominated films before Sunday's big night. He even found a pretty hilarious way to work the fact that he hadn't seen The Reader into his opening bit.

The Oscars did a great job of getting me psyched for some upcoming films — but when will we see this year's Oscar winners on the big screen next? Here's a rundown of what Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz, Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, and more are working on now.

Among my favorite Oscar moments was Hugh Jackman's opening number, in which he took a recession-inspired look at the year's five Best Picture nominees. I had a feeling things were going to go well when I saw the Slumdog Millionaire set with pizza boxes for TV monitors, but it got better with Hugh posing in the wooden Benjamin Button cutouts and hit its high point with "I haven't seen The Reader!"
It was great live, but it's only in pictures that I've really noticed all the funny details.

This year's Oscars producers didn't just experiment with their host — they also shook up the way the acting awards were presented. Instead of the regular old envelope, the Academy brought back winners from years past to say a few words directly to each nominee as a celebration of his or her work.
On the one hand, it was cool to see mega-stars on stage together, and the acting nominees got to bask in their moment a little longer than usual.

From the youngsters of Slumdog Millionaire beaming onstage to Kate Winslet's dad's whistle, this year's Oscar broadcast was full of fun, funny, and touching moments. In addition to those two, I also loved Danny Boyle accepting his Best Director award while bouncing like Tigger the tiger, James Franco and Seth Rogen bringing a little Pineapple Express stoner humor to the Oscars, and Dustin Lance Black giving an emotional and personal speech in accepting his Best Original Screenplay award.
Your turn: What were your favorite moments of this year's Academy Awards?

There weren't too many jaw-dropping upsets at this year's Oscars, but the evening was not without its surprises.
Lots of people — including yours truly — thought the Foreign Film category was a sure thing for Waltz with Bashir, maybe with a possible upset by The Class — but the Oscar went to Japan's Okuribito (Departures) instead. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was one of the most-nominated films of all time, but it was virtually shut out, taking home three awards — none in major categories.
