There's been a lot of chatter today about Britney Spears's three moonmen at the 2008 MTV VMAs on Sunday, but I want to briefly turn our attention to something else: the performances. Announcing the Winners: The 2008 MTV VMAs

Last year was supposed to be the big Britney Spears comeback show at the MTV Video Music Awards - but this year marked Britney's real return. Britney won her first VMA (and, before long, her second and third), taking home the moonmen for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year for "Piece of Me."

Russell Brand hosted the 25th ceremony, which included today's chart-toppers putting their own spins on classic songs (Katy Perry singing a snippet of "Like a Virgin," etc). While Britney was the night's big winner, others who will need to find a space on their shelves for a moonman include Chris Brown, the Pussycat Dolls, and Tokio Hotel. TV Tonight: The 25th Annual MTV Video Music Awards

Amazing, isn't it, that we've had a quarter-century of awesome performances and crazy stunts at the MTV Video Music Awards? This year's 25th installment of the irreverent awards ceremony kicks off tonight at 8 p.m., with a whole bunch of new moonmen just waiting to be handed out.

A few things we know about tonight's show: Russell Brand is hosting, which should mean lots of borderline bleep-able moments. Britney Spears is opening the show, though she's supposedly not performing. And tons of performances are lined up, including one from Kanye West to close the show.
