Five Ways to Fix the Emmys

This year's Emmys were among the lowest-rated in history, and ever since Sunday night, industry types have been trying to figure out what went wrong. Was it the five reality hosts? The low-rated nature of many of the winners and nominees? The fact that fewer people are watching live TV at all these days?

Obviously, it's too late to save this year's broadcast - but I'm looking toward the future. From what I saw, both behind the scenes and on TV, I think the Emmys can still be salvaged. Here are the top five ways I'd do it:

No. 5: Give out more awards. I'm not saying to make the show longer. Believe me, I would never say that. But there are approximately a gazillion Emmy categories, and most of them don't even make the TV broadcast. Why not stage the Outstanding Choreography routines live? Or do some sort of costume gallery like the Oscars broadcast often does? And the guest stars - such a big part of so many shows - should absolutely get their awards on the big night. There are some cool things that most of us never get to see, and putting them in the show would cut down on all that filler.

No. 4: Pay tribute to TV the right way. I really enjoyed the classic TV lines montage that opened this year's Emmys, and seeing the famous sets like Seinfeld's diner recreated on the Nokia Theatre stage was pretty cool. But the Laugh-In montage was a bust, and all the reality TV blather just highlighted what annoys so many of us about TV these days. When I'm watching a celebration of the best of television, I shouldn't leave feeling embarrassed for the medium.

To see my top three, just read more.

No. 3: Let the winners speak . . . Honestly. It's a three-hour show. There are maybe two dozen awards. We wouldn't miss much if we cut a few "comedy" bits in exchange for hearing more from the winners whom the Emmys are supposedly honoring. When you're turning up the music on Tom Hanks - probably the biggest star at the Emmys - and cutting some speeches entirely, you're doing something wrong. Sure, winners shouldn't get to talk forever, but a full 30 or 45 seconds before the music kicks in wouldn't be so bad, right?

No. 2: . . . and don't censor what they have to say. If the producers wouldn't normally bleep a word or cut away from a speech because of FCC indecency regulations, they shouldn't do it on Emmy night. It's awkward and uncomfortable for everyone.

No. 1: Ditch the host. Just do it. Go cold turkey. I don't care if they've already lined up Ellen, Ricky Gervais, or even the ghost of George Carlin himself - skip the host altogether next time. The Golden Globes do it, and (with the exception of last year's strike-induced fiasco) that's one of the more delightful awards shows around. Plus, as Gervais showed this year - and as I'm sure Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris would have, given the chance - the nominees and presenters are plenty funny all on their own. Just let them run the show.

Have the Emmys Ever Made You Start Watching a Show?

At this year's Emmys, the shows that got many of the biggest awards aren't exactly winners in the ratings. Taken all together, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, In Treatment, and Damages would probably pull in only about five to six million viewers per week!

Maybe that will change now, though, as the awards bring the shows more recognition and exposure. It makes me wonder: Have you ever started watching a series because it won an Emmy?

Odds and Ends From the Emmy Press Room

I'm still feeling the afterglow today from my time in the Emmy press room, where so many happy stars came to talk about their big awards. There are a bunch of tidbits I didn't get to share with you live, so to see what Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti, and Laura Linney had to say, read on!

Bryan Cranston was maybe the happiest guy on Earth when he came back to the press room, clutching his Emmy in one hand and the envelope with his name on it in the other. "I thought I was the dark horse, I really did," he said. "I thought I should have been in the back of the pack. Breaking Bad only had seven episodes to air. I didn't know if that would be enough sampling for the academy to take a look. I'm shocked and wonderfully surprised."

Cranston also talked a little about his bald head, a look he's currently sporting for the role as his character is going through chemotherapy (he's also lost 17 pounds, he said). Immersing himself in a character that way, he said, is "something actors dream about." That said, he compared baldness to having a skull made of velcro. "There are all kinds of things that are sticking to my head - fuzz, a jujube . . . "

Someone asked Jon Hamm about his reaction to his success and whether he was getting either a) shy or b) a big head. After laughing that both of those things were true, Hamm got serious: "I still feel like I'm in 10th grade and no one will talk to me at lunch," he said.

Laura Linney said she's still got a huge stack of history books by her bed, long after her work on John Adams was done. "I had a real understanding of how people get addicted to American history," she said, because each person leads to another. "I'm still reading, actually."

To hear from Jerry Bruckheimer, Jeff Probst, and January Jones, just read more.

Jeff Probst shrugged off criticism about the Emmys opening when he came backstage to talk about winning the Outstanding Reality Host award. "Did that work? I don't know," he said. "I give a lot of credit to [producer] Ken Ehrlich and those guys in terms of putting up with us."

Speaking of that opener, Jeremy Piven poked some fun at it during his acceptance speech and then went on at length about it backstage. "I thought we were being punked as an audience," he said. "There was that awkward - you know, like in the movie The Producers, [play-within-a-play] Springtime for Hitler? It was that confusing moment like, you know, what's happening right now?"

During the Mad Men session, January Jones declined to hint at where Betty's storyline is going, but she did say it's been fun to play the darker side of Betty. "The first season was all Betty sort of imploding," she said, "and the second season she's sort of exploding."

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner made an interesting point when reporters asked how it felt to be the first basic cable show to win an outstanding series award. "I'm surprised that there's such a segregated and caste system at the Emmys - I was unaware of it," he said. "I have this amazing cast. None of them were asked to present tonight."

Before he started rambling about inappropriate things, Barry Sonnenfeld praised the upcoming season of Pushing Daisies: "The scripts are better than last year," he said. "I think they're funnier. I think all of the actors have really gotten into their characters."

Wishing The Amazing Race would stop submitting its name after six straight Emmy wins? Don't count on it. "I doubt it, I really do," producer Jerry Bruckheimer said when asked if the show would step aside. "We love these statues."

Though Paul Giamatti was widely expected to win for playing John Adams, he claimed he had no expectations himself. "Not an optimist," he said. He compared his work on the miniseries to an endurance test (while wearing a hot wig): "I had to do everything," he said. But, on the other hand, "I got to do everything, which was amazing - run the emotional gamut and ride a horse . . . "

What Was the Biggest Surprise of the Emmy Awards?

Some things at Sunday's Emmy Awards were pretty expected: 30 Rock making a big dent in the comedy categories, Mad Men winning for Outstanding Drama Series, etc. But there were also a few jaw-dropping moments along the way. What did you think was most surprising?

The 2008 Emmys: The Highs and the Lows

I was right where all the action was at the Emmys last night, and it was totally exciting to be in the press room, chatting with the winners and watching the ceremony. Yet, as fun as that experience was, I felt like this year they somehow sucked a lot of the fun and energy from the show. At times I almost (almost) found myself wishing for Ryan Seacrest's Tudors costume of yore. Check out what I thought was in, as Heidi would say, and what was owt:

I really enjoyed that little montage of all the actors saying famous TV lines, and I thought it meant promising things for the rest of the intro. Sadly, it was followed up by the five hosts taking the stage and uselessly telling us that they didn't plan anything and then William Shatner ripped off Heidi Klum's clothes. Awk-ward.

Speaking of awkward, I'm a huge fan of Ricky Gervais, but his whole bit with trying to get Steve Carell's Emmy went on for so long and almost felt a little too real at times. For a moment or two I wondered if Carell was truly ticked off. I was grateful when that bit was over.

There seemed to be quite a few technical difficulties/strange decisions on the production end, from cutting away from Kirk Ellis's speech to having the microphones go silent when Vanessa Williams tried to introduce the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama.

I must say, however, that I am very glad they did away with the theater-in-the-round thing that they tried last year. So, improvement points there.

For more of the best and worst - and there is some positive stuff - read more.

The "Sock it to me" bit made me cringe, a lot - partly because it was obvious that something unfortunate was going to befall the person saying it, partly because very few people managed to pull off an amusing reading of the line.

On the other hand, I did appreciate the idea of recreating iconic sets. Wouldn't it have been cooler if the whole show had been done from the Seinfeld diner, the Simpsons couch, etc.?

One of my favorite moments of the evening: Mary Tyler Moore introducing "our eternally 'golden girl,' Betty White!" I love both those ladies, and it was sweet to see them onstage together. Well, it's always sweet to see Betty White.

Another favorite moment: Sally Field calling Tom Hanks "son," and Hanks calling Field "Mom." So cute!

And Best Speech goes to. . . Tina Fey. She was funny, smart, self-deprecating and gracious. In general I was so happy to see all the awesome Tina Fey love at this year's Emmys.

Every weekday I'll test your knowledge about TV shows, music, and movies. If you enter in the correct answer, you win points!

At this year's Emmys, the miniseries John Adams took home 13 awards, breaking the record for the most Emmys won by a miniseries or TV movie. Previously, two titles were tied for this record with 11 awards each, one of which was the 1976 TV movie Eleanor and Franklin.
What was the miniseries previously tied with Eleanor and Franklin for this record?

Announcing the 2008 Emmy Winners!

Well, if we've learned anything from this year's list of Emmy award winners it's that the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences loves the smart sarcasm (30 Rock) and the historical dramas (John Adams and Mad Men). Those three series pretty much dominate the list of winners, though there's also clearly some love for Damages, In Treatment and the TV movie Recount.

Not a win in sight this year for either Grey's Anatomy or Ugly Betty. Weeds also missed out altogether, while House earned one award for directing (Greg Yaitanes) and Lost picked up one award for sound mixing, but nothing else.

Are you surprised by any of this? Delighted? Disappointed? How do these winners stack up against what your hopes were before the awards ceremony?

Live From the Emmy Press Room: Mad Men

The cast of Mad Men was completely delightful in the Emmy press room, where they were celebrating their Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series - the first basic cable series to win that award. Several cast members sipped champagne, and Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss snapped iPhone pictures of each other.

Series creator Matthew Weiner called the win gratifying for a show that "resonates with the human condition," and he said it was something of a victory for every writer who's ever toiled away on a TV script at a library or a Starbucks. But a lot of the questions were for Hamm, whose Don Draper has been the heart of the show from the start.

"It is a career-changing role," Hamm said. "It is the thing that you dream about. You dream about getting to play something this rich and layered and funny and sad and beautiful all at the same time. Until recently, it hardly ever happens on television."

Pretending to smoke a cigarette while swilling champagne, Hamm acknowledged that "it is fun to dress up and smoke and drink in fakeland." But no worries - he said he doesn't behave like Don behaves in daily life.

Hamm also heaped praise on Bryan Cranston, who took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Breaking Bad, so to hear about that, just read more.

"I think Bryan's work in the show is amazing," Hamm said. "I know him well, also. For a friend on a show that's if anything even less watched than our show to succeed was - I mean, I was just so happy for him. So it was really nice, and I'm really, really glad he won and he got to make a speech rather than me, cause I'm terrible."
