More Emmy Chatter: The Comedy Acting Short Lists!

The Emmy nomination picture is really coming together now, thanks to the good folks over at Gold Derby. Yesterday, I shared what they dug up on the acting semifinalists in the drama categories, and now they've nearly rounded out their findings in the comedy categories (they have all the names but three of the lead comedy actors; I'll update when they release that info). As always, these lists aren't official-official, but Gold Derby knows its stuff.

So, that means it's time for another edition of SnubWatch: Who's the biggest omission from these lists? I'm a little surprised to see neither Becki Newton nor Michael Urie on the short lists, considering that their performances were often the funniest parts of Ugly Betty this season. Perhaps if my "More Marc and Amanda!" cries had been heeded earlier, voters could have seen their brilliance?

One observation: Overall, the comedy categories still draw very heavily from network TV, whereas half the actors in every drama category came from cable shows. I wonder if that will change in future years. Showtime has already announced a couple of new comedies in development, and I wonder if AMC or FX will give comedy a try next.

More Emmy Sneak Peeks: The Drama Acting Semifinalists!

The spies over at Gold Derby have been busy all week gathering names of the semifinalists in all of the acting categories for this year's Emmys. Just like the series semifinalists that the Emmys announced last week, each of the acting categories will be narrowed to five (or possibly six) official nominees by July 17.

So far, Gold Derby has managed to track down all the nominees for the four drama acting categories, along with what episodes the judges watched to make their decisions. The lists are unofficial, but Gold Derby has never steered me wrong before. (They also have some great leaked reports from Emmy judges, so check those out too.)

After the jump, you can check out the lists and start speculating. Who's a lock for the top five? Who got majorly snubbed? (My vote there: Connie Britton, who was a semifinalist in the lead acting category last year for Friday Night Lights, dropped herself down to supporting actress this year, and didn't even make the semifinals. An Early Look at the Emmys: The Top 10 Series Finalists

The nominations for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards won't be announced till July 17, but we can officially start the speculation about which series will be nominated. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of the top 10 finalists in both the Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series categories on Thursday. It's the first time the Academy has made the info available early, at least partially because it leaked last year.

These lists? They're good. Really good. There are a few series I'd leave off and a few I'd put on in their place, but overall, I'm pleased with the selection. Both Friday Night Lights and The Wire, perpetual underdogs I'm always rooting for, are finalists in the drama category. And despite only airing nine episodes, Pushing Daisies showed enough spark to make the final cut among comedy series. Flight of the Conchords also is among the potential comedy series nominees, a victory for nerdy Kiwis everywhere, and Family Guy has cleared one big hurdle in its quest toward becoming the first animated series to be nominated in a regular category.

Desperate Housewives, which was a finalist (but not a nominee) last year, didn't make the top 10 this time around. Heroes is the only still-active show among last year's drama nominees not to make the cut. To see the full list, just read more.
