After months of rumors and a season finale cliffhanger that left every option open, the news is here -- "Grey's Anatomy" did not renew Isaiah Washington's contract. ABC officials declined to comment on the news, but a source close to the negotiations said "It was a difficult year and this should come as no surprise to anyone."
Washington issued the following statement: "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."
Wow. That's bold.
The trouble started last October when an on set fight in which Washington used a homophobic slur against co-star TR Knight became public. Since then, it's been no secret that tensions are high on the set, including Washington's attempts at back peddling with a stint in "rehab" and filming this PSA. At the end of season three, the futures of both Washington and Knight were in question. Earlier in the week we learned that George O'Malley (Knight) will be back -- with a substantial raise, to boot.
While Isaiah's behavior has been controversial, offensive and pompous, I must admit that I will be sad to see his character go. Dr. Burke has hung up his scrubs and Seattle Grace will be a less stoic place without him. What do you guys think? Why do you think Isaiah won't be back? Will he be missed or was it totally for the best? And what do you make of his bizarre statement?

this is such BULL... People make mistakes, it doesn';t mean he should lose his job. HE did all the right things after too, its not like h repeatedly went around calling people names it was a ONE TME THING, and then yeah the golden globes but the man clearly needed therepy AND HE GOT IT... I mean imagine how many times poeple in this group have used words like that, what if it ment you got kicked off facebook for saying it?
If PAris didn't even have to do a week in jail, for violating her dui probation 2xs and didn't lose the simple life after that video of her using every slur under the sun, THEN IW SHOULDN'T BE FIRED!
Not to mention that everyything with the tension on the set has been reported as improving for like the last 6 months, and lately in EVERY interview KH has givin she's said how sorry he was and how things were better...
I think we should all protest.
1*I ment to say you got kicked off Popsugar... lol its early but this is def not facebook lol
2looks like they gave in to pressure and finally let him go.
3Well I for one am glad to see him go. I don't think there is any excuse for the kind of behavior he's shown and I don't think it makes for a healthy work environment. I know at my job if someone made a racist, sexist, or homophobic slur against a fellow co-worker that they would be fired. It's even worse if they've also been called on other bad behavior. There's only so many chances a person should get in these kinds of situations and personally I think it's a shame that he wasn't fired even earlier. To esk4, well I think people should have to face the consequences for using slurs against people even on sites like this. In my opinion, there is no excuse for showing that kind of disrespect towards others. And again it's worse in IW's case because these are co-workers he's doing it to, people he knows personally, and even if they aren't good friends or something he should still have enough respect for them not to say such insulting and hurtful things.
4You know, I thought i would be all "What!" but Im not, The Dr Burke story had run through its motions, I didnt want christina to marry him, and now its through Buh-Bye. Bring in some fresh meat!
5OH NO, I WILL MISS DR. BURKE. I HATE TO SEE ANYONE ON THAT SHOW LEAVE
ALTHOUGH CATERPILLARGIRL
HAS THE RIGHT IDEA, BRING ON ANOTHER MCHOTTY!!
6I think it's pretty weak that his entire statement was just a quote from Network. He could've at least come up with something on his own.
7Good riddance! I wasn't sad either CaterpillarGirl when Burke and Cristina broke up. Now she can start fresh again. I liked Grey's before EVERYONE was in intense relationships. Which isn't to say I'm happy Meredith and Derek are being retarded. Well more Meredith. Even the actors came out and said that you can have drama without sadness so...here's hoping they fix that too.
8The show won't be fun without having Bruke around. Are they going to replace IW with someone else or what? Seriously, they are ruining the show. First addison character got her own show, and now Bruke is kicked out! I just wonder the new season will turn to be? :s
9i'll miss burke. do you think KH put that in her contract? hehe JUST kidding.
10dr.burke kept the show calmer and less angst.
11without him the show is going to fall apart.
grey's anatomy is really loosing it and it sounds like it just might not be good next season.
i'll miss burke
It's too bad because he is a good actor and he plays the character so well. But he did raise a lot of chaos too. I would have thought he had learned from it judging from the rehab, the PSA bit, and apologies, but I guess the show disagrees.
12Boo... I liked the character of Burke...
13Everyone makes mistakes, geez, so i think Isaiah may have been treated unfairly... If he carried on acting the way he did without apologising or taking responsibility, then i'd say yes, sack the a$$... But he didn't, he was remorseful!
I dunno about Grey's anymore... Losing Burke, Addison, George failing, the possible storyline of Lexie/Derek? ,... Its a righteous mess at the moment...
Does anyone know if Callie will be back next season?
I will miss Burke as a character. Im not entirely surprised that he was let go, but I am shocked at his statement.
Havent you learned your lesson?
14I like that Dr.Burke's character, that show can do without George O'Malley's character,...they could have at least he married Christina or whatever and somehow he died soon afterwards not left her there and that's the end of it
. Oh well not that into Grey's Anatomy that much...i'm
a big HOUSE fan
.
15I thinking having Burke and Addison gone is going to leave a huge hole. I hope the writers have something and someone amazing coming on to fill those shoes. I am a little nervous.
16That was his statement? Is he still in high school? Why can't his publicist help him to form a much more mature sounding statement? I mean, surely he had to know that there was the possibility of his being booted off the show. It can't have been that big of a surprise. Well, too bad, Isaiah. You're gonna take it! I think it's sad, though, b/c now Cristina is going to be whiny and we already know that Mer and Izzie are whiny. Yuck. Now I'm no longer looking forward to the new season.
17Grey's won't be the same without Burke, but maybe that will be a good thing. The Burke/Christina story seemed to have lost steam and Grey's certainly has struggled with finding its focus since mid-season. Change can be good. At least the writers know which characters they have to work with now; maybe some of the old spark will be rekindled. We can only hope.
18I am really going to miss his character. I really like Burke and wanted him with Izzy, not Christina. Unfortunately he has to be a complete jerk in real life and ruin a good thing. It wasn't just TR Knight he had the feud with. It all started with him and Patrick Dempsey fighting. That led to the comment about TR.
19I never really liked his character - I won't necessarily miss him.
20I think the show will definitely be missing something without Addison or Burke. no, personally he was an a*s, but this messes up so much of the dynamic. Who will ever be able to be 'perfect' enough for Christina and who will be 'competing' with Derek for when the Chief actually retires (I have a feeling he is going to continue his job).
21grey's anatomy is going to have their work cut out for them (with Burke and Addison not returning) if the show is going to continue being great. while i don't agree with what washington said, i don't think he should have lost his job. and i disagree with you, racingtime. i don't think most employers would fire someone after making one comment such as the one he made. most employers would give a warning, put a note in the person's personal file and perhaps suggest some therapy as a condition for keeping his/her job. washington was doing just that. we've all said things we regret in the heat of the moment, and i think that washington's comment was no different. i don't think it was something he should have lost his job over, though.
22I'm so torn. Because I was so disappointed by his off-camera behavior, but my love of his character didn't change. I hate to see Dr. Burke go, meanwhile totally indifferent about Isiah himself.
23Yeah, didn't he grab Patrick Dempsey by the throat in their on-on-set argument? I agree w/ you guys that his character was good and will be missed on the show, but Isaiah seems like a real jerk. And like it or not, these actors actions do reflect on the show and the network, and they have to take that into consideration in contract negotiations.
24if amb was going to fire him they should have done so when the incident occured... but no they set up their hoops and IW jumped through EVERYONE!? and for what to be strung along with the fans like this to find out it was all a bunch of C R A P?!
25At last! You're next, John Edwards! My evil plan is coming to fruition, my pretties! Nyah-ha-ha-ha!
26He was in a contract for the whole season. They almost always make these decisions when they do everyone's contract negotiations.
And his quote sounds like a joke it's so ridiculous.
27
to AC!
28Ha! Ann Coulter
Cristina is freeeeee!
29I prefer Dr. Burke than George, it's sad to see him leave.
30ha, is that really Ann Coulter?
31WELL.. I do prefer Burke than George. George is a pu$$ie... he yell at everyone when he feels presion and I really didn't seem him regret it at all, still he got the ladies (mer, callie and Izzie). Burke is the nice person, he's kind, spiritual and patient. And I like to see George leave in a near future, because I still see him and want to slap him.
But the actors it is another story.
32I don't even know what to say about this anymore. Hate to see him go and we all make mistakes but what he said/did wasn't right. Although, he did try and make amends (even though a lot of fans didn't think he was sincere), I guess they felt it was time for him to leave. This is terrible. And Cristina/Burke was my favorite couple. I guess I'll have to start rooting for MerDer again.
33I thought Burke was a great character and Washington is a great actor, period. This is a shame.
34yeah, the Burke character was very good. I have been thinking a lot about this recently because I just started watching season 1 on DVD. Does anyone remember the first episode where there was a lot of 'George being gay' going around? Also, him and Burke get into it a lot and it seems like Burke has it in for George- he even calls him a pansy at one point. It was a great episode but watching now after all this controversy is interesting.
35I'm glad to see him go.
36This whole thing makes me sick - people are entitled to their opinions - and he should have shut up. But he did apologize and even go to REHAB for this crap. His character on Grey's will be missed badly. George is hard to believe that he is married anyhow now that he's out of the closet - and he even flunked his test. Both of them should have had to leave.
BTW - I am SICK SICK SICK of SKINNY Meridith Grey and her pathetic face.
37Surprise surprise....I think we all saw it coming.
38Well I love Dr. the character, IW made more than one comment. He made the initial comment and then didn't learn to shut his mouth. He also works in an industry where the spotlight is on him so whereas maybe we wouldn't get fired from our jobs, he did. Plus, added his confrontation with PD and I am not suprised at all he was let go.
39oops Dr. Burke sorry
40I am not a fan of his.
41I liked his character on the show, but other than that I've never really liked him. Even before Grey's when I'd seen him in other random things I felt like he had a pompous attitude. I don't think anyone will be surprised that they let him go either.
42i am so sad that he is leaving. who is christina going to date? or will she leave? nooooo....
43Maybe she'll hook up with George. lol Or McSteamy. He's still on the show, right?
44Grey's will be even worse next year. I'm calling this one though: Izzie's pregnant with George's baby.
45Why would they wait this long to fire him? After all the publicity about this stopped? I think Katherine Heigl is going to leave next she keeps whinning about not making enough money on the show.
46Well I think its stupid that Addison and Dr. Burke left the show because they were two main characters. I think the show will probably do fine without them though. I didn't really care about Burke on the show so I probably won't be missing him much. I wonder who's going to replace him??
47If they replace him! I hope they do. Maybe they can bring in Blair Underwood (L.A. Law, Sex and the City) as Burke. I don't thik he's doing anything now, well nothing that's been in the public.lol There should be a post about who should replace Burke, if there isn't already.
48this is dumb. dumb dumb. people makes mistakes and they grow from it, clearly t.r. knight is a wuss and wasn't strong enough to handle the situation and if it were up to me i'd take Burke over George any day. burktina will always live in my heart. so sad
49not surprising considering the controversy. BUT i do agree, I'll miss the character of Dr. Burke.
He brought a nice balance to the drama. Hopefully, with both his absence and Kate Walsh's exit, the show will find a new balance and synergy. And Christina can go back to being
Christina.
