What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Don't fret about there being nothing on TV when you can be catching up on movies!

Don't fret about there being nothing on TV when you can be catching up on movies! Get in on my Summer Netflix challenge or get your hands on one of this week's new DVD releases.

When in Rome

When in Rome is definitely one of those movies a romantic comedy lover won't be able to resist renting. No, it's not Oscar-winning material, but it is a cute, frothy slapstick confection that's fun enough. This is thanks to leads Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel, who are united by the coins of a magic fountain that make men fall in love with Bell. Yes, I know how dumb that sounds, but I enjoyed the silly flick for its laughs and goofball cast, which also includes Will Arnett and Dax Shepard. The DVD extras include a blooper reel, deleted scenes, and two music videos.

Youth in Revolt

Michael Cera treads both familiar and unfamiliar character territory in his Youth in Revolt dual role. As awkward teen Nick Twisp and his suave altar ego Francois, Nick sets his sights on his dream girl, and Francois gets him in more trouble than Nick bargained for. It all makes for an irreverent, if uneven, adaptation of CD Payne's novels. Zach Galifianakis and Justin Long provide cameos in the comedy, which is worth seeing just to watch Cera leave his comfort zone by playing a mustachioed Casanova. Extras on the DVD include a commentary track, deleted scenes, and the actors' audition reels.

Box Office

Box Office: Avatar Is Still Raking It In

No surprise here: Avatar topped the box office for its fourth straight week in a row, a feat that hasn't happened since 2008's The Dark Knight.

No surprise here: Avatar topped the box office for its fourth straight week in a row, a feat that hasn't happened since 2008's The Dark Knight. The film took in $48.5 million for the No. 1 spot, but also saw its biggest sales dip yet with a 29 percent decrease from last week's numbers.

Sherlock Holmes came in second yet again with $16.6 million, followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $16.3 million.

The majority of you said you were interested in seeing the vampire flick Daybreakers, and it proved to be the most promising of the weekend's debuts with $15 million for fourth place. It's Complicated came in fifth with $11 million.

Other newcomers Leap Year and Youth in Revolt didn't fare as well. The Amy Adams vehicle took in $9 million for a No. 6 spot, while the latter made $7 million for a disappointing No. 9 finish.

Youth in Revolt: Clever but Uneven

Michael Cera starts his latest movie, Youth in Revolt, playing a familiar character for him — awkward teen Nick Twisp.

Michael Cera starts his latest movie, Youth in Revolt, playing a familiar character for him — awkward teen Nick Twisp. Halfway through however, he goes completely against type when he inhabits Nick's imaginary alter ego Francoise Dillinger, who has blue eyes, a mustache and the dirtiest mouth this side of the Mississippi.

None of this is news to fans of CD Payne's book, a subversive piece of fiction that's about much more than Nick and Francoise. Like most adaptations, it's just about impossible to squeeze everything in from the novel (in this case, Payne's nearly 500 pages). Youth in Revolt's problem is that you can sense a frenetic energy to fit as much of the book's events and quirk into the movie.

It does succeed on some levels, though, particularly by focusing on two relationships: the one between Nick and Francoise, and the one between Nick and his dream girl, Sheeni (played by newcomer Portia Doubleday). To hear my thoughts on the movie, just read more
