James Franco Celebrates Saturday Night on Sunday Afternoon

James Franco stepped out yesterday to support his short documentary Saturday Night during the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC.

James Franco stepped out yesterday to support his short documentary Saturday Night during the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. The piece, which already won awards at the SXSW Festival, is a behind-the-scenes look at the week leading up to hosting SNL, and stars from the show like Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, and Jenny Slate were there to attend the premiere with James. After the red carpet, James headed inside for a screening and a Q&A session where he said the goal of his piece was to find out "what that mysterious comedy process was." James's directorial effort was one of two projects he had playing at Tribeca, as he also starred in a movie created by one of his NYU professors called William Vincent.

Movie Preview: Will Forte and Ryan Phillippe in MacGruber

You guys were pretty split on your excitement for the MacGruber movie when I asked a few weeks ago, but maybe the trailer will help you decide.

You guys were pretty split on your excitement for the MacGruber movie when I asked a few weeks ago, but maybe the trailer will help you decide. In this first peek at the film, we see our bumbling "hero," MacGruber (Will Forte) called in to track down a Russian nuclear warhead. Ryan Phillippe and Kristen Wiig are his sidekicks. As expected, MacGruber manages to put himself in compromising situations, makes absurd remarks, and seems to have relatively little experience or skill (socially and otherwise).

The trailer's goofy to say the least, but it's not entirely cringe-inducing — I even chuckled at a few of the back-and-forth quips between MacGruber and the villainous Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). On the other hand, I don't think I've ever seen a MacGruber skit on SNL that I wanted to watch for a full hour and a half, so I'm still a little skeptical about the film as a whole. What say you?

Are You Excited For the MacGruber Movie?

Universal pictures recently released these first stills of the upcoming MacGruber movie, and started a little inner-office debate about the SNL skit.

Universal pictures recently released these first stills of the upcoming MacGruber movie, and started a little inner-office debate about the SNL skit. There have been some awesome hits and clear misses when it comes to SNL skits-turned-movies, and I have to say I'm a bit skeptical about MacGruber. Sure, some of the skits are funny, but it's usually only when a great celeb is hosting the show. On the other hand, maybe Ryan Phillippe has been harboring some comedic skills that he's been keeping from us all these years. Where do you stand — are you excited for the MacGruber movie?

Ryan Phillippe Gets Down With MacGruber

Ryan Phillippe joined Will Forte and Kristen Wiig yesterday on the Albuquerque set of MacGruber.

Ryan Phillippe joined Will Forte and Kristen Wiig yesterday on the Albuquerque set of MacGruber. Will's been working on the movie for the last few days, shooting scenes in his hot red car over the weekend. Both Will and Kristen need to finish up with the film before Saturday Night Live returns on Sept. 26 with Megan Fox as host. Ryan, meanwhile, will be putting his hard-earned muscles to good use with his role as a good colonel against Val Kilmer's bad character in the latest SNL-inspired big screen project.

Movie Preview: The Brothers Solomon

Like one of this summer's biggest comedic hits, Knocked Up, The Brothers Solomon finds a lot of funny in childbirth — and conception, for that matter.

Like one of this summer's biggest comedic hits, Knocked Up, The Brothers Solomon finds a lot of funny in childbirth — and conception, for that matter. "Arrested Development"'s Will Arnett and Will Forte of "SNL" play brothers who make it their mission to give their ailing father grandchildren before he dies. My girl Kristen Wiig costars as the woman they impregnate with all their hopes and dreams, and Jenna Fischer makes an appearance, too. Apparently, Will Arnett said this movie was "possibly the funniest script" he'd ever read, and I am willing to trust the man's sense of funny.
